स्कंद पुराण में वर्णित एक कथा के अनुसार, प्राचीन काल में एक ब्राह्मणी अपने पति की मृत्यु के बाद भिक्षा मांगकर अपना घर चलाती थी। वह अपने पुत्र को लेकर भिक्षा लेने जाती थी और शाम तक वापस लौटकर आती थी। एक दिन जब वह शाम में भिक्षा लेकर लौट रही थी तो उसकी नज़र,नदी के किनारे एक सुंदर बालक पर पड़ी। जब वह उसके पास गई तो उसने देखा कि वह बालक घायल अवस्था में व हां पड़ा दर्द से कराह रहा था।
ब्राह्मणी को यह देखकर बहुत कष्ट हुआ और दया भाव के चलते, वह उसे घर ले आई। उस बालक का नाम धर्मगुप्त था जो कि विदर्भ का राजकुमार था, लेकिन ब्राह्मणी को इस बारे में कोई जानकारी नहीं थी।
अपने बेटे की तरह ब्राह्मणी ने उसका पालन-पोषण किया और एक माँ की तरह पूरे स्नेह के साथ उसका ध्यान रखा।इसी तरह परिवार में तीनों का समय व्यतीत होने लगा। कुछ समय पश्चात ब्राह्मणी दोनों बालकों के साथ मंदिर गई, वहां उनकी भेंट ऋषि शांडिल्य से हुई।
ऋषि शांडिल्य ने ब्राह्मणी को बताया कि जो बालक उन्हें मिला है, वह विदर्भ देश के राजकुमार हैं। उन्होंने आगे धर्मगुप्त के अतीत के बारे में बताते हुए कहा कि, शत्रुओं की सेना ने उसके राज्य पर आक्रमण कर दिया था और इस युद्ध में उसके पिताजी वीरगति को प्राप्त हो गए थे। उनकी माता जी भी शोक में स्वर्ग लोक सिधार गईं। इसके बाद शत्रु सैनिकों ने धर्मगुप्त को राज्य से बाहर निकाल दिया।
राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त की यह दुखद कहानी सुनकर ब्राह्मणी बहुत उदास हुई। ऋषि शांडिल्य ने ब्राह्मणी के कष्टों को देखते हुए, उसे प्रदोष व्रत करने की सलाह दी। ऋषि की आज्ञा से दोनों बालकों ने भी अपनी मां के साथ शिव जी की आराधना और प्रदोष व्रत करना शुरू कर दिया।
कुछ दिन बाद दोनों बालक वन में घूम रहे थे तभी उन्हें कुछ गंधर्व

कुछ दिन बाद दोनों बालक वन में घूम रहे थे तभी उन्हें कुछ गंधर्व कन्याएं नजर आईं। ब्राह्मण बालक तो घर लौट आया किंतु राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त की ‘अंशुमती’ नाम की गंधर्व कन्या से बात होने लगी। गंधर्व कन्या और राजकुमार एक दूसरे पर मोहित हो गए। कन्या ने विवाह हेतु राजकुमार को अपने पिता से मिलने के लिए बुलाया।
दूसरे दिन जब वह पुन: गंधर्व कन्या से मिलने आया तो गंधर्व कन्या के पिता ने बताया कि वह विदर्भ देश का राजकुमार है। गंधर्वराज को भगवान शिव ने सपने में दर्शन देकर अपनी पुत्री का विवाह राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त से कराने की आज्ञा दी। भगवान की आज्ञा मानकर गंधर्वराज ने अपनी पुत्री का विवाह राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त से करवा दिया। इसके बाद राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त ने गंधर्व सेना की सहायता से विदर्भ देश पर पुनः आधिपत्य प्राप्त किया। राजकुमार ने ब्राह्मणी के पुत्र को अपनी सेना का प्रधानमंत्री नियुक्त किया। इस प्रकार प्रदोष व्रत करने के फलस्वरूप अंततः उन तीनों लोगों के सभी कष्ट दूर हो गए।
कथा पढ़ने वाले सभी भक्तजनों पर भगवान शिव की कृपा सदैव बनी रहे।
According to a legend narrated in the Skanda Purana, in ancient times a brahmin after the death of her husband used to run his house by asking for alms. She used to take alms with her son and came back by evening. One day when she was returning with alms in the evening, her eyes fell on a beautiful boy on the bank of the river. When she went to him, she saw that the boy was in an injured condition and was moaning in pain.
The Brahmini was very upset seeing this and out of pity, she brought him home. The name of that child was Dharmagupta, who was the prince of Vidarbha, but the Brahmin had no information about this.
Like her son, the brahmin brought him up and took care of him like a mother with all the affection. Similarly, the time of the three began to pass in the family. After some time Brahmini went to the temple with both the boys, where he met sage Shandilya.
The sage Shandilya told the brahmin that the child he had received was the prince of Vidarbha. He further explained about Dharmagupta’s past and said that the army of enemies had attacked his kingdom and in this war his father had attained Veergati. His mother also went to heaven in mourning. After this the enemy soldiers drove Dharmagupta out of the kingdom.
Hearing this sad story of Prince Dharmagupta, the Brahmin was very sad. Sage Shandilya, seeing the sufferings of the brahmin, advised her to observe Pradosh fast. With the permission of the sage, both the children also started worshiping Shiva with their mother and observing Pradosh fast.
After a few days both the boys were roaming in the forest when they found some Gandharvas. The girl called the prince to meet her father for marriage.
On the second day when he again came to meet the Gandharva girl, the father of the Gandharva girl told that he is the prince of Vidarbha country. Lord Shiva appeared in a dream to Gandharvaraj and ordered his daughter to be married to Prince Dharmagupta. Gandharvaraj got his daughter married to Prince Dharmagupta by obeying the Lord’s orders. After this, Prince Dharmagupta with the help of Gandharva army regained control over the country of Vidarbha. The prince appointed Brahmani’s son as the prime minister of his army. Thus as a result of observing Pradosh Vrat, finally all the sufferings of those three people were removed.
