एक बार की बात है, देवताओं के राजा इंद्र ने किसानों से किसी कारण से नाराज होकर बारह वर्षों तक बारिश न करने का निर्णय लेकर किसानों से कहा-” अब आप लोग बारह वर्षों तक फसल नही ले सकेंगे।”
सारे किसानों ने चिंतातुर होकर एक साथ इंद्रदेव से वर्षा करवाने हेतु प्रार्थना की। इंद्र ने कहा -” यदि भगवान शंकर अपना डमरू बजा देंगे तो वर्षा हो सकती है।” इंद्र ने किसानों को ये उपाय तो बताया लेकिन साथ में गुप्तवार्ता कर भगवान शिव से ये आग्रह कर दिया कि आप किसानों से सहमत न होना। जब किसान भगवान शंकर के पास पहुँचे तो भगवान ने उन्हें कहा -" डमरू तो बारह वर्ष बाद ही बजेगा।"
किसानों ने निराश होकर बारह वर्षों तक खेती न करने का निर्णय लिया। उनमें से एक किसान था जिसने खेत में अपना काम करना नहीं छोड़ा। वो नियमति रूप से खेत जोतना, निंदाई, गुड़ाई, बीज बोने का काम कर रहा था। ये माजरा देख कर गाँव के किसान उसका मज़ाक उड़ाने लगे। कुछ वर्षों बाद गाँव वाले इस परिश्रमी किसान से पूछने लगे -" जब तुम्हे पता है कि बारह वर्षों तक वर्षा नही होने वाली तो अपना समय और ऊर्जा क्यों नष्ट कर रहे हो?"
उस किसान ने उत्तर दिया- मैं,भी जानता हूँ कि बारह वर्ष फसल नही आने वाली लेकिन मैं, ये काम अपने अभ्यास के लिए कर रहा हूँ।
क्योंकि बारह साल कुछ न करके मैं, खेती किसानी का काम भूल जाऊँगा, मेरे शरीर की श्रम करने की आदत छूट जाएगी। इसीलिए ये काम मैं, नियमित कर रहा हूँ ताकि जब बारह साल बाद वर्षा हो तब मुझे अपना काम करने के लिए कोई कठिनाई न हो।
ये तार्किक चर्चा माता पार्वती भी बड़े कौतूहल के साथ सुन रही थी। बात सुनने के बाद माता, भगवान शिव से सहज बोली – “प्रभु, आप भी बारह वर्षों के बाद डमरू बजाना भूल सकते हैं।”
माता पार्वती की बात सुन कर भोले बाबा चिंतित हो गए।अपना डमरू बज रहा या नही ये देखने के लिए उन्होंने डमरू उठाया और बजाने का प्रयत्न करने लगे।
जैसे ही डमरू बजा बारिश शुरू हो गई….जो किसान अपने खेत में नियमित रूप से काम कर रहा था उसके खेत में भरपूर फसल आयी। बाकी के किसान पश्चात्ताप के सिवाय कुछ न कर सके।
डमरू कभी भी बज सकता है।*इसलिए केवल नकारात्मक बातों पर अपना ध्यान लगाने के बजाय हम अपने कार्य- व्यवसाय से संबंधित कुशलताओं की धार पैनी करने का, अपनी अभिरुचि का अभ्यास करते रहना चाहिये।

Once upon a time, Indra, the king of the gods, got angry with the farmers for some reason and decided not to rain for twelve years and said to the farmers – “Now you people will not be able to harvest crops for twelve years.”
All the farmers were worried and prayed together to Lord Indra for rain. Indra said – “If Lord Shankar plays his damru, it may rain.” Indra told this solution to the farmers but in a secret conversation he requested Lord Shiva not to agree with the farmers. When the farmers reached Lord Shankar, the Lord told him – “The drum will ring only after twelve years.”
The farmers were disappointed and decided not to do farming for twelve years. One of them was a farmer who did not stop his work in the field. He was regularly doing the work of ploughing, weeding, weeding and sowing seeds. Seeing this incident, the farmers of the village started making fun of him. After a few years, the villagers started asking this hard-working farmer – “When you know that there will be no rain for twelve years, then why are you wasting your time and energy?”
The farmer replied – I also know that there will be no harvest for twelve years, but I am doing this work for my practice.
Because by doing nothing for twelve years, I will forget the work of farming, my body will lose the habit of labour. That is why I am doing this work regularly so that when it rains after twelve years, I do not face any difficulty in doing my work.
Mother Parvati was also listening to this logical discussion with great curiosity. After listening to this, Mother said to Lord Shiva casually – “Lord, you too can forget playing the Damru after twelve years.”
Hearing the words of Mother Parvati, Bhole Baba became worried. To see whether his drum was playing or not, he picked up his drum and started trying to play it.
As soon as the drum was played, it started raining…the farmer who was working regularly in his field got a bountiful harvest in his field. The remaining farmers could do nothing except repent.
The drum can be played at any time.*Therefore, instead of focusing only on negative things, we should keep practicing our interests and sharpening our skills related to our work.
