आज वरुथिनी एकादशी है। वैशाख माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी वरुथिनी एकादशी के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है। इस दिन भगवान श्रीहरि विष्णु की पूजा करने से कष्ट एवं दुख दूर होते हैं और स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होती है।
जिन पर भगवान विष्णु की कृपा होती है, उनको मृत्यु के बाद मोक्ष भी मिलता है। जो लोग इस दिन व्रत रखते हैं, वे वरुथिनी एकादशी कथा का पाठ भी करते हैं, जिससे व्रत का महत्व पता चलता है।
वरुथिनी एकादशी व्रत कथा-
एक बार युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान श्रीकृष्ण से वरुथिनी एकादशी व्रत के महत्व को बताने का निवेदन किया। तब श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा कि वैशाख माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी ही वरुथिनी एकादशी है। इस व्रत को करने से पुण्य की प्राप्ति होती है। उन्होंने वरुथिनी एकादशी व्रत के महत्व को इस कथा के माध्यम से बताया-
एक समय में नर्मदा नदी के तट पर राजा मांधाता राज्य करते थे। वह धर्मात्मा एवं दानी व्यक्ति थे। एक बार वे जंगल के पास तपस्या कर रहे थे। तभी वहां एक भालू आया और उनके पैर को चबाने लगा। फिर वह राजा को घसीट कर जंगल में ले गया। इस दौरान राजा की तपस्या भंग हो गई और वे घायल हो गए।
उन्होंने भगवान विष्णु को मन ही मन ध्यान करके अपने प्राणों की रक्षा की प्रार्थना की। तब भगवान विष्णु प्रकट हुए और अपने चक्र से उस भालू को मारकर राजा मांधाता के प्राणों की रक्षा की।
भालू के हमले में राजा मंधाता अपंग हो गए थे, इस वजह से वे दुखी और कष्ट में थे। उन्होंने भगवान विष्णु से इस शारीरिक और मानसिक पीड़ा को दूर करने का उपाय पूछा।
तब श्रीहरि ने कहा कि यह तुम्हारे पूर्वजन्म के अपराध का फल है। तुमको मथुरा में वैशाख माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का व्रत रखना होगा और मेरे वराह अवतार की पूजा करनी होगी। उसके पुण्य प्रभाव से ही कष्ट और दुख दूर होंगे।
भगवान विष्णु के बताए अनुसार राजा मांधाता मथुरा पहुंच गए और विधिपूर्वक वरुथिनी एकादशी का व्रत रखा और वराह अवतार की पूजा की। इस व्रत के पुण्य फल से राजा मांधाता के कष्ट और दुख दूर हो गए, वे फिर से शारीरिक तौर पर अच्छे हो गए। उनको भगवान विष्णु की कृपा से स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति भी हुई।
भगवान श्रीहरि विष्णु से प्रार्थना है कि जैसे आपने राजा मांधाता के कष्टों को दूर कर दिये, हे प्रभु वैसे ही वरुथिनी एकादशी व्रत करने वाले अपने सभी भक्तों के कष्टों को दूर कीजिये।

Today is Varuthini Ekadashi. Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month is famous as Varuthini Ekadashi. Worshiping Lord Shri Hari Vishnu on this day removes pain and sorrow and one attains heaven.
Those who are blessed by Lord Vishnu, they also get salvation after death. People who keep fast on this day also recite Varuthini Ekadashi Katha, which shows the importance of fasting.
Varuthini Ekadashi fast story-
Once Yudhishthira requested Lord Krishna to tell him the importance of Varuthini Ekadashi fast. Then Shri Krishna said that Varuthini Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month. By observing this fast, virtue is attained. He told the importance of Varuthini Ekadashi fast through this story-
Once upon a time, King Mandhata used to rule on the banks of river Narmada. He was a pious and charitable person. Once he was doing penance near the forest. Then a bear came there and started chewing on his leg. Then he dragged the king to the forest. During this the king’s austerity was disturbed and he was injured.
He prayed to Lord Vishnu to save his life by meditating in his mind. Then Lord Vishnu appeared and killed the bear with his discus and saved the life of King Mandhata.
King Mandhata was crippled in the attack of the bear, due to which he was sad and in pain. He asked Lord Vishnu the solution to remove this physical and mental pain.
Then Shri Hari said that this is the result of the crime of your previous birth. You will have to fast on Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month in Mathura and worship my Varaha avatar. Pains and sorrows will go away only by its virtuous effect.
As told by Lord Vishnu, King Mandhata reached Mathura and duly observed Varuthini Ekadashi fast and worshiped the Varaha Avatar. King Mandhata’s sufferings and sorrows were removed by the virtuous fruit of this fast, he became physically fit again. He also attained heaven by the grace of Lord Vishnu.
It is a prayer to Lord Sri Hari Vishnu that just as you removed the sufferings of King Mandhata, O Lord, similarly remove the sufferings of all your devotees who observe Varuthini Ekadashi fast.
