कार्तिक माह माहात्म्य – चौथा अध्याय

माता शारदा की कृपा, लिखूं भाव अनमोल।

कार्तिक माहात्म का कहूं, चौथा अध्याय खोल।।

नारदजी ने कहा – ऎसा कहकर भगवान विष्णु मछली का रूप धारण कर के आकाश से जल में गिरे. उस समय विन्ध्याचल पर्वत पर तप कर रहे महर्षि कश्यप अपनी अंजलि में जल लेकर खड़े थे. भगवान उनकी अंजलि में जा गिरे. महर्षि कश्यप ने दया कर के उसे अपने कमण्डल में रख लिया. मछली के थोड़ा बड़ा होने पर महर्षि कश्यप ने उसे कुएं में डाल दिया. जब वह मछली कुएं में भी न समा सकी तो उन्होंने उसे तालाब में डाल दिया, जब वह तालाब में भी न आ सकी तो उन्होंने उसे समुद्र में डाल दिया.

वह मछली वहां भी बढ़ने लगी फिर मत्स्यरूपी भगवान विष्णु ने इस शंखासुर का वध किया और शंखासुर को हाथ में लेकर बद्रीवन में आ गये, वहां उन्होंने संपूर्ण ऋषियों को बुलाकर इस प्रकार आदेश दिया – मुनीश्वरों! तुम जल के भीतर बिखरे हुए वेदमंत्रों की खोज करो और जितनी जल्दी हो सके, उन्हें सागर के जल से बाहर निकाल आओ तब तक मैं देवताओं के साथ प्रयाग में ठहरता हूँ.तब उन तपोबल सम्पन्न महर्षियों ने यज्ञ और बीजों सहित सम्पूर्ण वेद मन्त्रों का उद्धार किया. उनमें से जितने मंत्र जिस ऋषि ने उपलब्ध किए वही उन बीज मन्त्रों का उस दिन से ऋषि माना जाना लगा. तदनन्तर सब ऋषि एकत्र होकर प्रयाग में गये, वहां उन्होंने ब्रह्मा जी सहित भगवान विष्णु को उपलब्ध हुए सभी वेद मन्त्र समर्पित कर दिए.

सब वेदों को पाकर ब्रह्माजी बहुत प्रसन्न हुए. उन्होंने देवताओं और ऋषियों के साथ प्रयाग में अश्वमेघ यज्ञ किया. यज्ञ समाप्त होने पर सब देवताओं ने भगवान से निवेदन किया – देवाधिदेव जगन्नाथ! इस स्थान पर ब्रह्माजी ने खोये हुए वेदों को पुन: प्राप्त किया है और हमने भी यहाँ आपके प्रसाद से यज्ञभाग पाये हैं. अत: यह स्थान पृथ्वी पर सबसे श्रेष्ठ, पुण्य की वृद्धि करने वाला एवं भोग तथा मोक्ष प्रदान करने वाला हो. साथ ही यह समय भी महापुण्यमय और ब्रह्मघाती आदि महापापियों की भी शुद्धि करने वाला हो तथा तह स्थान यहां दिये हुए दान को अक्षय बना देने वाला भी हो, यह वर दीजिए.

भगवान विष्णु बोले – देवताओं! तुमने जो कुछ कहा है, वह मुझे स्वीकार है, तुम्हारी इच्छा पूर्ण हो. आज से यह स्थान ब्रह्मक्षेत्र के नाम से प्रसिद्ध होगा, सूर्यवंश में उत्पन्न राजा भगीरथ यहाँ गंगा को ले आएंगे और वह यहां सूर्यकन्या यमुना से मिलेगी. ब्रह्माजी और तुम सब देवता मेरे साथ यहां निवास करो. आज से यह तीर्थ तीर्थराज के नाम से विख्यात होगा. तीर्थराज के दर्शन से तत्काल सब पाप नष्ट हो जाएंगे. जब सूर्य मकर राशि में स्थित होगें उस समय यहां स्नान करने वाले मनुष्यों के सब पापों का यह तीर्थ नाश करेगा. यह काल भी मनुष्यों के लिए सदा महान पुण्य फल देने वाला होगा.

माघ में सूर्य के मकर राशि में स्थित होने पर यहां स्नान करने से सालोक्य आदि फल प्राप्त होंगे. देवाधिदेव भगवान विष्णु देवताओं से ऎसा कहकर ब्रह्माजी के साथ वहीं अन्तर्धान हो गये. तत्पश्चात इन्द्रादि देवता भी अपने अंश से प्रयाग में रहते हुए वहां से अन्तर्धान हो गये. जो मनुष्य कार्तिक में तुलसी जी की जड़ के समीप श्रीहरि का पूजन करता है वह इस लोक में सम्पूर्ण भोगों का उपभोग कर के अन्त में वैकुण्ठ धाम को जाता है.

Naradji said – Saying this, Lord Vishnu took the form of a fish and fell from the sky into the water. At that time, Maharishi Kashyap, who was doing penance on Vindhyachal mountain, was standing with water in his Anjali. God fell in his Anjali. Maharishi Kashyap took pity and kept him in his kamandal. When the fish grew a little bigger, Maharishi Kashyap put it in the well. When that fish could not even fit in the well, they put it in the pond, when it could not even come in the pond, they put it in the sea.

That fish started growing there too, then Lord Vishnu in the form of Matsya killed this Shankhasur and came to Badrivan with Shankhasur in his hand, where he called all the sages and ordered as follows – Munishwars! You search for the Veda mantras scattered in the water and bring them out of the ocean water as soon as possible, till then I stay in Prayag with the deities. did. The sage who provided all the mantras out of them, those seed mantras came to be considered as sage from that day. After that all the sages gathered together and went to Prayag, where they dedicated all the Veda mantras available to Lord Vishnu including Brahma ji.

Brahmaji was very pleased after receiving all the Vedas. He performed the Ashwamedha Yagya at Prayag along with the gods and sages. At the end of the yagya, all the gods requested the Lord – Devadhidev Jagannath! At this place Brahmaji has recovered the lost Vedas and we have also received sacrifices from your prasad here. Therefore, this place should be the best on earth, the one who increases virtue and bestows enjoyment and salvation. At the same time, this time should also purify the great sinners like great virtuous and brahmghati etc.

Lord Vishnu said – Gods! I accept whatever you have said, may your wish be fulfilled. From today this place will be famous as Brahmakshetra, King Bhagiratha born in Suryavansh will bring Ganga here and she will meet Surya Kanya Yamuna here. Lord Brahma and all you deities reside here with me. From today this pilgrimage will be known as Tirtharaj. All sins will be destroyed immediately by the sight of Tirtharaj. When the Sun is situated in Capricorn, at that time this pilgrimage will destroy all the sins of the people who bathe here. This period will also always give great virtuous results for human beings.

If the Sun is situated in Capricorn in Magh, taking a bath here will give Salokya etc. Devadhidev Lord Vishnu, saying this to the deities, disappeared there with Brahmaji. Thereafter, the deity Indra also disappeared from there with his share while living in Prayag. The person who worships Shri Hari near the root of Tulsi ji in Kartika, after consuming all the pleasures in this world, goes to Vaikunth Dham at the end.
