जिस दिन त्रयोदशी तिथि प्रदोष काल के समय व्याप्त होती है उसी दिन प्रदोष का व्रत किया जाता है। प्रदोष काल सूर्यास्त से प्रारम्भ हो जाता है। जब त्रयोदशी तिथि और प्रदोष साथ-साथ होते हैं (जिसे त्रयोदशी और प्रदोष का अधिव्यापन भी कहते हैं) वह समय शिव पूजा के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ होता है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि प्रदोष के समय शिवजी प्रसन्नचित मनोदशा में होते हैं। यह जानना महत्वपूर्ण है कि प्रदोष के व्रत का दिन दो शहरों के लिए अलग-अलग हो सकता है। यह जरुरी नहीं है कि दोनों शहर अलग-अलग देशों में हों क्योंकि यह बात भारत वर्ष के दो शहरों के लिए भी मान्य है। प्रदोष के लिए व्रत का दिन सूर्यास्त के समय पर निर्भर करता है और जिस दिन सूर्यास्त के बाद त्रयोदशी तिथि प्रबल होती है उस दिन प्रदोष का व्रत किया जाता है। इसीलिए कभी-कभी प्रदोष का व्रत त्रयोदशी तिथि के एक दिन पूर्व, द्वादशी तिथि के दिन पड़ जाता है। क्योंकि सूर्यास्त का समय सभी शहरों के लिए अलग-अलग होता है। दिन का अन्तिम एवं रात्रि का प्रथम प्रहर प्रदोष काल कहलाता है। प्रदोष व्रत एक लोकप्रिय हिंदू व्रत है जो भगवान शिव और देवी पार्वती को समर्पित है। यह उपवास कृष्ण पक्ष और शुक्ल पक्ष के त्रयोदशी (13 वें दिन) को मनाया जाता है।
“प्रदोष व्रत की महिमा”
शास्त्रों के अनुसार प्रदोष व्रत को रखने से दो गायों को दान देने के समान पुण्य फल प्राप्त होता है। प्रदोष व्रत को लेकर एक पौराणिक तथ्य सामने आता है कि ‘एक दिन जब चारों और अधर्म की स्थिति होगी, अन्याय और अनाचार का एकाधिकार होगा, मनुष्य में स्वार्थ भाव अधिक होगी। व्यक्ति सत्कर्म करने के स्थान पर नीच कार्यों को अधिक करेगा। उस समय में जो व्यक्ति त्रयोदशी का व्रत रख, शिव आराधना करेगा, उस पर शिव कृ्पा होगी। इस व्रत को रखने वाला व्यक्ति जन्म- जन्मान्तर के फेरों से निकल कर मोक्ष मार्ग पर आगे बढता है।
“प्रदोष व्रत विधि”
प्रत्येक माह के कृष्ण और शुक्ल पक्ष की त्रयोदशी के दिन प्रदोष व्रत किया जाता है। प्रदोष व्रत करने के लिए मनुष्य को त्रयोदशी के दिन प्रात: सूर्य उदय से पूर्व उठना चाहिए। नित्यकर्मों से निवृत्त होकर, भगवान श्री भोले नाथ का स्मरण करें। इस व्रत में आहार नहीं लिया जाता है। पूरे दिन उपावस रखने के बाद सूर्यास्त से एक घंटा पहले, स्नान आदि कर श्वेत वस्त्र धारण किए जाते हैं। इसके बाद सायंकाल में विभिन्न पुष्पों, लाल चंदन, हवन और पंचामृत द्वारा भगवान शिवजी की पूजा करनी चाहिए। पूजा के समय एकाग्र रहना चाहिए और शिव-पार्वती का ध्यान करना चाहिए। मान्यता है कि एक वर्ष तक लगातार यह व्रत करने से मनुष्य के सभी पाप खत्म हो जाते हैं। त्रयोदशी के दिन सूर्योदय और सूर्यास्त से पहले के समय को शुभ माना जाता है। इस समय के दौरान ही सभी सारी पूजा पाठ किये जाते है। सूर्यास्त से एक घंटे पहले भक्तों को स्नान करके पूजा के लिए तैयार हो जाना चाहिए। एक प्रारंभिक पूजा की जाती है, जिसमे भगवान शिव को देवी पार्वती भगवान गणेश भगवान कार्तिक और नंदी के साथ पूजा जाता है। उसके बाद एक अनुष्ठान किया जाता है जिसमे भगवान शिव की पूजा की जाती है। इस अनुष्ठान के बाद भक्त प्रदोष व्रत कथा सुनते है, या शिव पुराण की कहानियां सुनते हैं। महामृत्यंजय मंत्र का 108 बार जाप भी किया जाता है।
“प्रदोष व्रत के लाभ”
दिन के अनुसार प्रदोष व्रत का नाम बदलता रहता है।
सोम प्रदोष व्रत:- यह सोमवार को आता है इसलिए इसे ‘सोम परदोषा’ कहा जाता है। इस दिन व्रत रखने से भक्तों के अन्दर सकारात्मक विचार आते है और वह अपने जीवन में सफलता प्राप्त करते है।
भोम प्रदोष व्रत:- जब प्रदोष व्रत मंगलवार को आता है तो इसे ‘भौम प्रदोश’ कहा जाता है। इस व्रत को रखने से भक्तों की स्वास्थ्य सम्बन्धी समस्याए दूर होती है और उनके शारीरिक स्वास्थ्य में सुधार आता है। भोम प्रदोष व्रत जीवन में समृद्धि लाता है।
सौम्य वारा प्रदोष व्रत:- सौम्य वारा प्रदोष बुधवार को आता है। इस शुभ दिन पर व्रत रखने से भक्तों की इच्छाएं पूरी होती है और ज्ञान भी प्राप्त होता हैं।
गुरुवार प्रदोष व्रत:- यह व्रत गुरुवार को आता है और इस उपवास को रख कर भक्त अपने सभी मौजूदा खतरों को समाप्त कर सकते हैं। इससे सभी शत्रुओं का नाश होता है। इसके अलावा गुरुवार प्रदोष व्रत रखने से पूर्वजों का आशीर्वाद मिलता है।
भृगु वारा प्रदोष व्रत:- जब प्रदोष व्रत शुक्रवार को मनाया जाता है तो उसे भृगु वारा प्रदोष व्रत कहा जाता है। इस व्रत को करने से जीवन से नकारात्मकता समाप्त होती है और सफलता मिलती है।
शनि प्रदोष व्रत:- शनि प्रदोष व्रत शनिवार को आता है और सभी प्रदोष व्रतों में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता है। जो व्यक्ति इस दिन व्रत रखता है वह खोये हुए धन की प्राप्ति करता है और जीवन में सफलता प्राप्त करता है। संतान प्राप्ति की कामना हो तो शनिवार के दिन पड़ने वाला प्रदोष व्रत करना चाहिए।
भानु वारा प्रदोष व्रत:- यह रविवार को आता है और भानु वारा प्रदोष वात का लाभ यह है कि भक्त इस दिन उपवास को रखकर दीर्घायु और शांति प्राप्त कर सकते है।
“प्रदोष व्रत का उद्यापन”
इस व्रत को ग्यारह या फिर 26 त्रयोदशियों तक रखने के बाद व्रत का उद्यापन करना चाहिए। व्रत का उद्यापन त्रयोदशी तिथि पर ही करना चाहिए। उद्यापन से एक दिन पूर्व श्री गणेश का पूजन किया जाता है. पूर्व रात्रि में कीर्तन करते हुए जागरण किया जाता है। प्रात: जल्दी उठकर मंडप बनाकर, मंडप को वस्त्रों और रंगोली से सजाकर तैयार किया जाता है। ‘ॐ उमा सहित शिवाय नम:’ मंत्र का एक माला यानी 108 बार जाप करते हुए हवन किया जाता है। हवन में आहूति के लिए खीर का प्रयोग किया जाता है। हवन समाप्त होने के बाद भगवान भोलेनाथ की आरती की जाती है और शान्ति पाठ किया जाता है। अंत: में दो ब्रह्माणों को भोजन कराया जाता है और अपने सामर्थ्य अनुसार दान दक्षिणा देकर आशीर्वाद प्राप्त किया जाता है।
“प्रदोष व्रत कथा”
स्कंद पुराण में वर्णित एक कथा के अनुसार प्राचीन काल में एक विधवा ब्राह्मणी अपने पुत्र को लेकर भिक्षा लेने जाती और संध्या को लौटती थी। एक दिन जब वह भिक्षा लेकर लौट रही थी तो उसे नदी किनारे एक सुन्दर बालक दिखाई दिया जो विदर्भ देश का राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त था। शत्रुओं ने उसके पिता को मारकर उसका राज्य हड़प लिया था। उसकी माता की मृत्यु भी अकाल हुई थी। ब्राह्मणी ने उस बालक को अपना लिया और उसका पालन-पोषण किया। कुछ समय पश्चात ब्राह्मणी दोनों बालकों के साथ देवयोग से देव मंदिर गई। वहां उनकी भेंट ऋषि शाण्डिल्य से हुई। ऋषि शाण्डिल्य ने ब्राह्मणी को बताया कि जो बालक उन्हें मिला है वह विदर्भ देश के राजा का पुत्र है जो युद्ध में मारे गए थे और उनकी माता को ग्राह ने अपना भोजन बना लिया था। ऋषि शाण्डिल्य ने ब्राह्मणी को प्रदोष व्रत करने की सलाह दी। ऋषि आज्ञा से दोनों बालकों ने भी प्रदोष व्रत करना शुरू किया। एक दिन दोनों बालक वन में घूम रहे थे तभी उन्हें कुछ गंधर्व कन्याएँ नजर आई। ब्राह्मण बालक तो घर लौट आया किंतु राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त “अंशुमती” नाम की गंधर्व कन्या से बात करने लगे। गंधर्व कन्या और राजकुमार एक दूसरे पर मोहित हो गए, कन्या ने विवाह हेतु राजकुमार को अपने पिता से मिलवाने के लिए बुलाया। दूसरे दिन जब वह पुन: गंधर्व कन्या से मिलने आया तो गंधर्व कन्या के पिता ने बताया कि वह विदर्भ देश का राजकुमार है। भगवान शिव की आज्ञा से गंधर्वराज ने अपनी पुत्री का विवाह राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त से कराया। इसके बाद राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त ने गंधर्व सेना की सहायता से विदर्भ देश पर पुनः आधिपत्य प्राप्त किया। यह सब ब्राह्मणी और राजकुमार धर्मगुप्त के प्रदोष व्रत करने का फल था। स्कंदपुराण के अनुसार जो भक्त प्रदोषव्रत के दिन शिवपूजा के बाद एकाग्र होकर प्रदोष व्रत कथा सुनता या पढ़ता है उसे सौ जन्मों तक कभी दरिद्रता नहीं होती।
”ॐ नमःशिवाय”
Pradosh fast is observed on the day when Trayodashi Tithi falls during Pradosh period. Pradosh Kal starts from sunset. When Trayodashi Tithi and Pradosha are together (also known as overlapping of Trayodashi and Pradosha) that time is best for Shiva worship. It is believed that Shiva is in a happy mood at the time of Pradosh. It is important to know that the day of Pradosh fasting may be different for two cities. It is not necessary that both the cities should be in different countries because this thing is also valid for two cities of India year. The day of fasting for Pradosh depends on the time of sunset and Pradosh is observed on the day when Trayodashi Tithi prevails after sunset. That is why sometimes Pradosh fast falls on Dwadashi Tithi, a day before Trayodashi Tithi. Because the time of sunset is different for all the cities. The last of the day and the first prahar of the night is called Pradosh Kaal. Pradosh Vrat is a popular Hindu fast dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This fast is observed on Trayodashi (13th day) of Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha.
“Glory of Pradosh Vrat”
According to the scriptures, keeping Pradosh fast gives the same virtuous result as donating two cows. A mythological fact about Pradosh Vrat comes to the fore that ‘one day when there will be a state of unrighteousness all around, there will be monopoly of injustice and incest, there will be more selfishness in man. Instead of doing good deeds, a person will do more lowly deeds. During that time, the person who observes Trayodashi fast and worships Shiva, will be blessed by Shiva. The person who observes this fast, after going through the cycle of birth after birth, proceeds on the path of salvation.
“Pradosh Vrat Vidhi”
Pradosh fast is observed on Trayodashi of Krishna and Shukla Paksha of every month. To observe Pradosh fast, a person should wake up on Trayodashi in the morning before sunrise. Retiring from daily activities, remember Lord Shri Bhole Nath. Food is not taken during this fast. After fasting for the whole day, one hour before sunset, after taking bath etc., white clothes are worn. After this, Lord Shiva should be worshiped in the evening with various flowers, red sandalwood, havan and Panchamrit. At the time of worship one should remain concentrated and meditate on Shiva-Parvati. It is believed that by observing this fast continuously for a year, all the sins of a human being are eradicated. The time before sunrise and sunset on Trayodashi is considered auspicious. All the worship is done during this time only. One hour before sunset the devotees should take a bath and get ready for the worship. An initial puja is performed, in which Lord Shiva is worshiped along with Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartik and Nandi. After that a ritual is performed in which Lord Shiva is worshipped. After this ritual devotees listen to Pradosh Vrat Katha, or stories from Shiva Purana. Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is also chanted 108 times.
“Benefits of Pradosh Vrat” The name of Pradosh Vrat varies according to the day.
Som Pradosha Vrat:- It falls on Monday hence it is called ‘Som Pardosha’. By observing fast on this day, positive thoughts come in the devotees and they get success in their life.
Bhoma Pradosh Vrat:- When Pradosh Vrat falls on a Tuesday, it is called ‘Bhum Pradosh’. By observing this fast, the health problems of the devotees are removed and their physical health improves. Bhoma Pradosh fast brings prosperity in life.
Soumya Vara Pradosh Vrat:- Soumya Vara Pradosh falls on Wednesday. By observing a fast on this auspicious day, the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled and knowledge is also attained.
Thursday Pradosh Vrat:- This fast falls on Thursday and by observing this fast the devotees can eliminate all their existing dangers. This destroys all enemies. Apart from this, keeping the Pradosh fast on Thursday gives the blessings of the ancestors.
Bhrigu Vara Pradosh Vrat:- When Pradosh Vrat is observed on Friday then it is called Bhrigu Vara Pradosh Vrat. By observing this fast, negativity from life ends and success is achieved.
Shani Pradosh Vrat:- Shani Pradosh Vrat falls on Saturday and is considered to be the most important of all Pradosh Vrats. The person who observes a fast on this day gets lost money and gets success in life. If you want to get a child, then Pradosh fast which falls on Saturday should be done.
Bhanu Vara Pradosh Vrat:- It falls on Sunday and the advantage of Bhanu Vara Pradosh Vata is that devotees can attain longevity and peace by observing fast on this day.
“Udyapan of Pradosh Vrat”
After keeping this fast for eleven or 26 Trayodashi, the fast should be done Udyapan. Udyapan of the fast should be done only on Trayodashi Tithi. One day before Udyapan, Shri Ganesh is worshipped. Jagran is done by chanting Kirtan in the previous night. Waking up early in the morning, the mandap is prepared by decorating it with clothes and rangoli. Havan is performed by chanting a rosary of the mantra ‘Om Uma Sahit Shivaay Namah’ i.e. 108 times. Kheer is used for offering in Havan. After the completion of the havan, the aarti of Lord Bholenath is performed and peace is recited. In the end, two brahmins are fed food and blessings are obtained by giving donations according to their ability.
“Pradosh Vrat Katha”
According to a story mentioned in Skanda Purana, in ancient times a widowed Brahmin used to take alms with her son and return in the evening. One day when she was returning with alms, she saw a beautiful child on the bank of the river, who was the prince of Vidarbha, Dharmagupta. The enemies had usurped his kingdom by killing his father. His mother also died in a famine. The Brahmini adopted that child and brought him up. After some time, the Brahmin with both the children went to the Dev Mandir with Devyog. There he met sage Shandilya. The sage Shandilya told the brahmin that the child they had found was the son of the king of Vidarbha, who was killed in the war and that his mother had been eaten by the planet. Sage Shandilya advised Brahmins to observe Pradosh fast. With the permission of the sage, both the children also started fasting Pradosh. One day both the boys were roaming in the forest when they saw some Gandharva girls. The Brahmin boy returned home but Prince Dharmagupta started talking to a Gandharva girl named “Anshumati”. The Gandharva girl and the prince were fascinated by each other, the girl invited the prince to meet her father for marriage. On the second day when he again came to meet the Gandharva girl, the father of the Gandharva girl told that he is the prince of Vidarbha country. On the orders of Lord Shiva, Gandharvaraj got his daughter married to Prince Dharmagupta. After this, Prince Dharmagupta with the help of Gandharva army regained control over the country of Vidarbha. All this was the result of fasting Pradosh of Brahmani and Prince Dharmagupta. According to Skanda Purana, a devotee who listens or reads the story of Pradosh fast after concentrating after worshiping Shiva on the day of Pradoshvrat, never suffers poverty for a hundred births.
