एक आठ साल का लड़का गर्मी की छुट्टियों में अपने दादा जी के पास गाँव घूमने आया। एक दिन वो बड़ा खुश था, उछलते-कूदते वो दादाजी के पास पहुंचा और बड़े गर्व से बोला, ”मैं बड़ा होकर बहुत सफल आसामी बनना चाहता हूं। क्या आप मुझे सफल होने के कुछ टिप्स दे सकते हैं?”
दादा जी ने ‘हाँ’ में सिर हिला दिया, और बिना कुछ कहे लड़के का हाथ पकड़ा और उसे करीब की पौधशाला में ले गए।
वहां जाकर दादा जी ने दो छोटे-छोटे पौधे खरीदे और घर वापस आ गए।
वापस लौट कर उन्होंने एक पौधा घर के बाहर लगा दिया और एक पौधा गमले में लगा कर घर के अन्दर रख दिया।
“क्या लगता है तुम्हे, इन दोनों पौधों में से भविष्य में कौन सा पौधा अधिक सफल होगा?”, दादा जी ने लड़के से पूछा।
लड़का कुछ क्षणों तक सोचता रहा और फिर बोला, ” घर के अन्दर वाला पौधा ज्यादा सफल होगा क्योंकि वो हर एक खतरे से सुरक्षित है जबकि बाहर वाले पौधे को तेज धूप, आंधी-पानी, और जानवरों से भी खतरा है…”
दादाजी बोले, ” चलो देखते हैं आगे क्या होता है !”, और वह अखबार उठा कर पढने लगे।
कुछ दिन बाद छुट्टियाँ ख़तम हो गयीं और वो लड़का वापस शहर चला गया। इस बीच दादाजी दोनों पौधों पर बराबर ध्यान देते रहे और समय बीतता गया।
३-४ साल बाद एक बार फिर वो लड़का अपने पेरेंट्स के साथ गाँव घूमने आया और अपने दादा जी को देखते ही बोला, “दादा जी, पिछली बार मेंने आपसे सफल आसामी होने के कुछ टिप्स मांगे थे पर आपने तो कुछ बताया ही नहीं…पर इस बार आपको ज़रूर कुछ बताना होगा।”
दादा जी मुस्कुराये और लडके को उस जगह ले गए जहाँ उन्होंने गमले में पौधा लगाया था। अब वह पौधा एक खूबसूरत पेड़ में बदल चुका था।
लड़का बोला, ” देखा दादाजी मैंने कहा था न कि ये वाला पौधा ज्यादा सफल होगा…”
“अरे, पहले बाहर वाले पौधे का हाल भी तो देख लो…”, और ये कहते हुए दादाजी लड़के को बाहर ले गए.
बाहर एक विशाल वृक्ष गर्व से खड़ा था! उसकी शाखाएं दूर तक फैलीं थीं और उसकी छाँव में खड़े राहगीर आराम से बातें कर रहे थे।
“अब बताओ कौन सा पौधा ज्यादा सफल हुआ?”, दादा जी ने पूछा।
“…ब..ब…बाहर वाला!….लेकिन ये कैसे संभव है, बाहर तो उसे न जाने कितने खतरों का सामना करना पड़ा होगा….फिर भी…”, लड़का आश्चर्य से बोला।
दादा जी मुस्कुराए और बोले, “हाँ, लेकिन खतरों का सामना करने के अपने अलग फायदे भी तो हैं, बाहर वाले पेड़ के पास आज़ादी थी कि वो अपनी जड़े जितनी चाहे उतनी फैला ले, आपनी शाखाओं से आसमान को छू ले पर इसके लिए उसे कई विपदाओं का सामना भी करना पड़ा। बेटे, यदि इस बात को याद रख कर तुम जो भी करोगे उसमे सफल होगे। अगर तुम जीवन भर समस्याओं से घबराकर काम करते हो तो तुम कभी भी उतनी नहीं उन्नति कर पाओगे जितनी तुम्हारी क्षमता है, लेकिन अगर तुम तमाम खतरों के बावजूद इस दुनिया का सामना करने के लिए तैयार रहते हो तो तुम्हारे लिए कोई भी लक्ष्य हासिल करना असम्भव नहीं है!”
लड़के ने लम्बी सांस ली और उस विशाल वृक्ष की तरफ देखने लगा…वो दादा जी की बात समझ चुका था, आज उसे सफलता का एक बहुत बड़ा सबक मिल चुका था!

An eight-year-old boy came to visit his grandfather in the village during the summer holidays. One day he was very happy, jumped and reached his grandfather and proudly said, “I want to grow up to be a very successful Assamese. Can you give me some tips to be successful?”
Grandfather nodded ‘yes’, and without saying anything took the boy’s hand and took him to a nearby nursery.
After going there, grandfather bought two small plants and returned home.
After returning, he planted a plant outside the house and planted a plant in a pot and kept it inside the house.
“Which one of these two plants do you think will be more successful in the future?” asked the boy.
The boy thought for a few moments and then said, “The plant inside the house will be more successful because it is safe from every danger, while the plant outside is at risk from strong sunlight, wind, water, and animals too…”

After a few days the holidays ended and the boy went back to the city. Meanwhile, Grandfather kept paying equal attention to both the plants and time passed.
After 3-4 years once again that boy came to visit the village with his parents and on seeing his grandfather said, “Grandfather, last time I had asked you some tips to become a successful Assamese but you did not tell me anything… But this time you definitely have to tell something.
Grandfather smiled and took the boy to the place where he had planted the plant in the pot. Now that plant had turned into a beautiful tree.
The boy said, “Look grandpa, I told you that this plant will be more successful…”
“Hey, first see the condition of the plant outside…”, and saying this, grandfather took the boy outside.
A giant tree stood proudly outside! Its branches spread far and wide and the passers-by standing in its shade were talking comfortably.
“Now tell me which plant was more successful?”, asked Grandpa.
“…b..b…the one outside!….but how is this possible, he must have faced so many dangers outside….yet…”, the boy said in surprise.
Grandfather smiled and said, “Yes, but facing the dangers has its advantages too, the tree outside had the freedom to spread its roots as far as it wanted, to touch the sky with its branches, but for this it had to Had to face many calamities as well. Son, if you keep this in mind, you will be successful in whatever you do. If you work in fear of problems all your life, you will never progress as much as you are capable of, but if you are ready to face the world in spite of all the dangers, then it is impossible for you to achieve any goal. Not there!”
The boy took a long breath and started looking at that huge tree… He had understood Grandfather’s point, today he had received a great lesson of success!
