हरियाली तीज से जुड़ी एक कथा बहुत प्रचलित है।

कथा के अनुसार, भगवान शिव ने माता पार्वती को उनके पिछले जन्मों का स्मरण कराने के लिए तीज की कथा सुनाई थी। एकबार की बात है माता पार्वती अपने पूर्वजन्म के बारे में याद करने में असर्मथ थीं तब भोलेनाथ माता से कहते हैं कि हे पार्वती! तुमने मुझे प्राप्त करने के लिए 107 बार जन्म लिया था

लेकिन तुम मुझे पति रूप में न पा सकीं लेकिन 108वें जन्म में तुमने पर्वतराज हिमालय के घर जन्म लिया और मुझे वर रूप में प्राप्त करने के लिए घोर तपस्या की।

भगवान शिव कहते हैं कि हे पार्वती! तुमने अन्न-जल का त्यागकर पत्ते खाए और सर्दी-गर्मी और बरसात में तुमने हजारों कष्टकर सहकर अपने वचन पर अडिग रहीं। तुम्हारे कष्टों को देखकर तुम्हारे पिताजी बहुत दुखी थे, तब नारद मुनि तुम्हारे घर पधारे और कहा कि मुझे भगवान विष्णु ने भेजा है। उन्होंने मुझसे कहलवाया है कि वह आपकी कन्या से प्रसन्न हैं और विवाह का प्रस्ताव भेजा है।
तब पार्वती के पिता खुशी से भगवान विष्णु के साथ विवाह के लिए तैयार हो जाते हैं। नारदमुनि ने भी भगवान विष्णु को यह शुभ संदेश सुना दिया। लेकिन जब यह बात पार्वती को पता चली तब वह बहुत दुखी हुईं। पार्वती ने अपने मन की बात अपनी सखी को सुनाई। तब सखी ने माता पार्वती को घने जंगल में छुपा दिया। जब पार्वती के गायब होने की खबर हिमालय राज को पता चली तब उन्होंने खोजने में धरती-पाताल एक कर दिया लेकिन हे पार्वती! तुम ना मिलीं क्योंकि तुम जंगल में एक गुफा में रेत से शिवलिंग बनाकर मेरी पूजा-पाठ में लीन थीं।
हे पार्वती! तुम्हारी पूजा से मैं बहुत प्रसन्न हुआ और तुम्हारी मनोकामना पूरी की। जब हिमालयराज गुफा में पहुंचे तब तुमने अपने पिता को बताया कि मैंने शिवजी को पतिरूप में चयन कर लिया और उन्होंने मेरी मनोकामना पूरी कर दी है। शिवजी ने मेरा वरण कर लिया है। मैं आपके साथ केवल एक शर्त पर चलूंगी कि आप मेरा विवाह भोलेनाथ से करवाने के लिए तैयार हो जाएं। तब हे पार्वती! तुम्हारे पिताजी मान गए और विधि-विधान हमारा विवाह हुआ। हे पार्वती! तुम्हारे कठोर तप और व्रत से ही हमारा विवाह हो सका।
हे पार्वती! इस हरियाली तीज को जो भी निष्ठा के साथ करेगा, मैं उसको मनोवांधित फल प्रदान करूंगा। उसे तुम जैसा सुहाग मिलेगा। तब हिंदू धर्म की हर कुंवारी कन्या अच्छे वर की कामना हेतु यह व्रत रखती है। वहीं सुहागन महिलाएं अपने पति की लंबी उम्र के लिए इस व्रत को रखती हैं। भव‌िष्य पुराण में देवी पार्वती ने खुद बताया है क‌ि हरियाली तीज का व्रत करने पर महिलाओं को सुहाग और सौभाग्य की प्राप्त‌ि होती है। सावन महीने में तृतीया त‌िथ‌ि कई वर्षों की कड़ी तपस्या के बाद देवी पार्वती ने भगवान श‌िव को पत‌ि रूप में पाने का वरदान प्राप्त क‌िया था

According to legend, Lord Shiva told the story of Teej to Mother Parvati to remind her of her past lives. Once upon a time, Mother Parvati was unable to remember about her previous birth, then Bholenath says to Mother, O Parvati! you were born 107 times to get me

But you could not get me as a husband, but in the 108th birth, you were born in the house of Parvatraj Himalaya and did severe penance to get me as a groom.

Lord Shiva says that O Parvati! You gave up food and water and ate leaves and remained firm on your word by enduring thousands of hardships in winter, summer and rain. Your father was very sad to see your sufferings, then Narada Muni came to your house and said that Lord Vishnu has sent me. He has told me that he is pleased with your daughter and has sent a marriage proposal.
Then Parvati’s father happily agrees to her marriage with Lord Vishnu. Naradmuni also narrated this auspicious message to Lord Vishnu. But when Parvati came to know about this, she became very sad. Parvati told her mind to her friend. Then Sakhi hid Mother Parvati in a dense forest. When Himalaya Raj came to know about Parvati’s disappearance, he united the earth and underworld in search of her, but O Parvati! You didn’t meet because you were engrossed in my worship by making a Shivling out of sand in a cave in the forest.
Hey Parvati! I was very pleased with your worship and fulfilled your wish. When Himalayaraj reached the cave, you told your father that I have chosen Lord Shiva as my husband and he has fulfilled my wish. Shivji has chosen me. I will go with you only on one condition that you get ready to get me married to Bholenath. Then O Parvati! Your father agreed and we were legally married. Hey Parvati! We could get married only because of your hard penance and fasting.
Hey Parvati! Whoever does this Hariyali Teej with devotion, I will give him the desired fruit. He will get honey like you. Then every unmarried girl of Hindu religion observes this fast to wish for a good groom. On the other hand, married women keep this fast for the long life of their husbands. In the Bhavishya Purana, Goddess Parvati herself has told that by fasting on Hariyali Teej, women get good luck and happiness. Tritiya Tithi in the month of Sawan, after many years of severe penance, Goddess Parvati had received the boon of getting Lord Shiva as her husband.
