बाद में यह वाराणसी के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुआ ! यह कथा इस प्रकार है :-
मगध का राजा जरासंध बहुत शक्तिशाली और क्रूर था ! उसके पास अनगिनत सैनिक और दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्र थे ! यही कारण था ,कि आस-पास के सभी राजा उसके प्रति मित्रता का भाव रखते थे !
जरासंध की अस्ति और प्रस्ति नामक दो पुत्रियाँ थीं ! उनका विवाह मथुरा के राजा कंस के साथ हुआ था !
कंस अत्यंत पापी और दुष्ट राजा था ! प्रजा को उसके अत्याचारों से बचाने के लिए भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने उसका वध कर दिया !
दामाद की मृत्यु की सुचना सुनकर जरासंध क्रोधित हो उठा !
प्रतिशोध की ज्वाला में जलते जरासंध ने कई बार मथुरा पर आक्रमण किया ! किंतु हर बार श्री कृष्ण उसे पराजित कर जीवित छोड़ देते थे !
एक बार उसने कलिंगराज पौंड्रक और काशीराज के साथ मिलकर मथुरा पर आक्रमण किया !
लेकिन भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने उन्हें भी पराजित कर दिया ! जरासंध तो भाग निकला किंतु पौंड्रक और काशीराज भगवान के हाथों मारे गए !
काशीराज के बाद उसका पुत्र काशीराज बना और श्री कृष्ण से बदला लेने का निश्चय किया !
वह श्री कृष्ण की शक्ति जानता था ! इसलिए उसने कठिन तपस्या कर भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न किया और उन्हें समाप्त करने का वर माँगा !
भगवान शिव ने उसे कोई अन्य वर माँगने को कहा ! किंतु वह अपनी माँग पर अड़ा रहा !
तब शिव ने मंत्रों से एक भयंकर कृत्या बनाई और उसे देते हुए बोले :-
वत्स ! तुम इसे जिस दिशा में जाने का आदेश दोगे यह उसी दिशा में स्थित राज्य को जलाकर राख कर देगी ! लेकिन ध्यान रखना, इसका प्रयोग किसी ब्राह्मण भक्त पर मत करना !
वरना इसका प्रभाव निष्फल हो जाएगा ! यह कहकर भगवान शिव अंतर्धान हो गए !
इधर, दुष्ट कालयवन का वध करने के बाद श्री कृष्ण सभी मथुरा वासियों को लेकर द्वारिका आ गए थे !
काशीराज ने श्री कृष्ण का वध करने के लिए कृत्या को द्वारिका की ओर भेजा !
काशीराज को यह ज्ञान नहीं था कि भगवान श्री कृष्ण ब्राह्मण भक्त हैं ! इसलिए द्वारिका पहुँचकर भी कृत्या उनका कुछ अहित न कर पाई !
उल्टे श्री कृष्ण ने अपना सुदर्शन चक्र उसकी ओर चला दिया ! सुदर्शन भयंकर अग्नि उगलते हुए कृत्या की ओर झपटा ! प्राण संकट में देख कृत्या भयभीत हो कर काशी की ओर भागी !
सुदर्शन चक्र भी उसका पीछा करने लगा ! काशी पहुँचकर सुदर्शन ने कृत्या को भस्म कर दिया ! किंतु फिर भी उसका क्रोध शांत नहीं हुआ और उसने काशी को भस्म कर दिया !
कालान्तर में वारा और असि नामक दो नदियों के मध्य यह नगर पुनः बसा ! वारा और असि नदियों के मध्य बसे होने के कारण इस नगर का नाम वाराणसी पड़ गया !
इस प्रकार काशी का वाराणसी के रूप में पुनर्जन्म हुआ..!!

Later it became famous as Varanasi. The story goes like this:-
King Jarasandha of Magadha was very powerful and cruel. He had countless soldiers and divine weapons. This was the reason that all the nearby kings used to have a feeling of friendship towards him.
Jarasandha had two daughters named Asti and Prasti. She was married to King Kansa of Mathura.
Kansa was a very sinful and evil king. Lord Krishna killed him to save the people from his atrocities.
Hearing the news of son-in-law’s death, Jarasandha got furious.
Burning in the flame of vengeance, Jarasandha attacked Mathura many times. But every time Shri Krishna defeated him and left him alive.
Once he along with Kalingaraja Paundrak and Kashiraj attacked Mathura.
But Lord Krishna defeated them too! Jarasandha escaped but Paundrak and Kashiraj were killed at the hands of God.
After Kashiraj, his son became Kashiraj and decided to take revenge on Shri Krishna.
He knew the power of Shri Krishna! So he pleased Lord Shiva by doing hard penance and asked for a boon to end him.
Lord Shiva asked him to ask for some other boon. But he stuck to his demand.
Then Shiva made a terrible act out of mantras and while giving it he said: –
Child ! In whichever direction you order it to go, it will burn the kingdom situated in that direction to ashes! But take care, do not use it on any Brahmin devotee!
Otherwise its effect will be ineffective! Saying this Lord Shiva disappeared.
Here, after killing the evil Kalayavan, Shri Krishna had come to Dwarka with all the people of Mathura.
Kashiraj sent Kriya to Dwarka to kill Shri Krishna.
Kashiraj had no knowledge that Lord Krishna is a Brahmin devotee. Therefore, even after reaching Dwarka, the act could not do him any harm.
On the contrary, Shri Krishna turned his Sudarshan Chakra towards him. Sudarshan swung towards Kriya, spewing a fierce fire. Seeing her life in danger, she ran towards Kashi in fear.
Sudarshan Chakra also started following him. On reaching Kashi, Sudarshan burnt Krita to ashes. But still his anger did not subside and he consumed Kashi.
In the course of time, this city was again settled between two rivers named Vara and Asi. Due to being situated between the rivers Vara and Asi, the city got its name as Varanasi.
Thus Kashi was reborn as Varanasi..!! 🙏🙏🏻🙏🏼Jai Jai Shree Radhe🙏🙏🙏🏽
