सहस्र कवच नाम का एक असुर था जो भगवान सूर्यदेव का अनन्य भक्त था। वैसे उसका असली नाम तो दम्भोद्भव था लेकिन सूर्यदेव की कठोर तपस्या से उसने वरदान में सहस्र कवच हासिल किये थे और यह कवच वही तोड़ सकता था जिसने हजारों वर्ष तपस्या की हो।

इसी कारण उसका नाम सहस्र कवच हो गया। ऐसे में सभी उससे डरने लगे। देवताओं के सिंहासन तक उसके भय से डोलने लगे। संसार को सहस्र कवच के भय मुक्त कराने के लिये ही भगवान विष्णु ने नर और नारायण के रुप में अवतार लिया और तपस्या करने लगे।

मान्यता है कि बद्रीनाथ धाम में की गई तपस्या का फल भी हजारों साल की तपस्या जितना मिलता है। ऐसे में नर और नारायण में से एक सहस्रकवच के साथ युद्ध करता और दूसरा तप करता और रोज सहस्र कवच का एक कवच तोड़ देता। फिर दूसरे रोज दूसरा युद्ध करता और पहला तपस्या में लीन रहता इस प्रकार जब सहस्र कवच के नौ सौ निन्यानबे कवच टूट गये तो उसने डर के मारे सूर्यदेव की शरण ली।

मान्यता है कि कालांतर में नर और नारायण ने ही श्रीकृष्ण और अर्जुन का अवतार लिया और सहस्रकवच ने कर्ण के रुप में जन्म लेकर अपने पूर्वजन्म के दुष्कर्मों की सजा काटी। जो एक कवच बचा हुआ था उसके रहते कर्ण को नहीं मारा जा सकता था इसलिये देवराज इंद्र ने कर्ण से कवच और कुंडल मांग लिये थे जिसके बाद कर्ण का वध हुआ।

There was an asura named Sahasra Kavach who was an ardent devotee of Lord Sun. By the way, his real name was Dambhodbhava, but due to the harsh penance of Suryadev, he had obtained a thousand armors as a boon and only the one who had done penance for thousands of years could break this armor.

That is why his name became Sahasra Kavach. In such a situation, everyone started fearing him. Even the throne of the gods started shaking in fear of him. To make the world free from the fear of Sahasra Kavach, Lord Vishnu incarnated in the form of Nar and Narayan and started doing penance.

It is believed that the result of the penance done in Badrinath Dham is equal to the penance of thousands of years. In such a situation, one of Nar and Narayan would fight with Sahasra Kavach and the other would do penance and break one armor of Sahasra Kavach everyday. Then the next day he would fight another and the first one would remain engrossed in penance. In this way, when the nine hundred and ninety nine armors of Sahasra Kavach were broken, he took refuge in the Sun God out of fear.

It is believed that in time Nar and Narayan took the incarnation of Shri Krishna and Arjuna and Sahasrakavach was born as Karna and punished for the misdeeds of his previous birth. Karna could not be killed with the one armor that was left, so Devraj Indra had asked for armor and coil from Karna, after which Karna was killed.
