जैसे हर संत के जीवन में देखा जाता है, वैसे महावीर स्वामी के समय भी देखा गया। जहाँ उनसे लाभान्वित होनेवाले लोग थे, वहीं समाजकंटक निंदक भी थे।
उनमें से पुरंदर नाम का निंदक बड़े ही क्रूर स्वभाव का था। वह तो महावीरजी के मानो पीछे ही पड़ गया था। उसने कई बार महावीर स्वामी को सताया, उनका अपमान किया पर संत ने माफ कर दिया।
एक दिन महावीर स्वामी पेड़ के नीचे ध्यानस्थ बैठे थे। तभी घूमते हुए पुरंदर भी वहाँ पहुँच गया। वह महावीरजी को ध्यानस्थ देख आग-बबूला होकर बड़बड़ाने लगा- अभी इनका ढोंग उतारता हूँ। अभी मजा चखाता हूँ। और आवेश में आकर उसने एक लकड़ी ली और उनके कान में खोंप दी। कान से रक्त की धार बह चली लेकिन महावीरजी के चेहरे पर पीड़ा का कोई चिह्न न देखकर वह और चिढ़ गया और कष्ट देने लगा।
इतना सब होने पर भी महावीरजी किसी प्रकार की कोई पीड़ा को व्यक्त किये बिना शांत ही बैठे रहे। परंतु कुछ समय बाद अचानक उनका ध्यान टूटा, उन्होंने आँख खोलकर देखा तो सामने पुरंदर खड़ा है। उनकी आँखों से आँसू झरने लगे।
पुरंदर ने पूछा- क्या पीड़ा के कारण रो रहे हो ?
महावीर स्वामी- नहीं, शरीर की पीड़ा के कारण नहीं।
पुरंदर- तो किस कारण रो रहे हो ?
महावीर स्वामी- मेरे मन में यह व्यथा हो रही है कि मैं निर्दोष हूँ फिर भी तुमने मुझे सताया है तो तुम्हें कितना कष्ट सहना पड़ेगा ! कैसी भयंकर पीड़ा सहनी पड़ेगी ! तुम्हारी उस पीड़ा की कल्पना, करके मुझे दुःख हो रहा है। यह सुनकर पुरंदर मूक हो गया और पीड़ा की कल्पना से सिहर उठा।
पुरंदर की तरह गोशालक नामक एक कृतघ्न गद्दार ने भी महावीर स्वामी को बहुत सताया था। महावीरजी के ५०० शिष्यों को उनके खिलाफ खड़ा करने का उसका षड्यंत्र भी सफल हो गया था। उस दुष्ट ने महावीर स्वामीजी को जान से मारने तक का प्रयत्न किया लेकिन जो जैसा बोता है उसे वैसा ही मिलता है। धोखेबाज लोगों की जो गति होती है, गोशालक का भी वही हाल हुआ।
अतः निंदको व कुप्रचारको ! अब भी समय है, कर्म करने में सावधान हो जाओ । अन्यथा जब प्रकृति तुम्हारे कुकर्मों की तुम्हें सजा देगी उस समय तुम्हारी वेदना पर रोनेवाला भी कोई न मिलेगा।

As it is seen in the life of every saint, it was also seen in the time of Mahavir Swami. Where there were people who benefited from them, there were also social slanderers. Among them, the slanderer named Purandar was very cruel. It was as if he had fallen behind Mahavirji. He tortured Mahavir Swami many times, insulted him but the saint forgave him.
One day Mahavir Swami was sitting in meditation under a tree. That’s why Purandar also reached there while roaming around. Seeing Mahavirji meditating, he started muttering in a fit of rage – Now I am pretending to be him. I just enjoy And in a fit of rage, he took a stick and banged it in his ear. Blood flowed from the ear, but seeing no sign of pain on Mahavirji’s face, he became more irritated and started torturing him.
Despite all this, Mahavirji remained calm without expressing any kind of pain. But after some time suddenly his attention was broken, he opened his eyes and saw Purandar standing in front of him. Tears started flowing from his eyes.
Purandar asked – Are you crying because of pain?
Mahavir Swami- No, not because of the pain of the body.
Purandar – Then why are you crying?
Mahavir Swami – I am feeling sad that I am innocent, still you have tortured me, so how much pain you will have to bear! What a terrible pain you will have to bear! Imagining your pain, I feel sad. Hearing this, Purandar became speechless and shuddered at the thought of pain.
Like Purandar, an ungrateful traitor named Goshalak also tormented Mahavir Swami. His conspiracy to set 500 disciples of Mahavirji against him was also successful. That rascal even tried to kill Mahavir Swamiji, but he reaps what he sows. The speed of the deceitful people, the same happened to the cowherd.
Therefore, to the slanderers and miscreants! There is still time, be careful in doing your work. Otherwise, when nature will punish you for your misdeeds, at that time no one will be found to cry over your pain.
