अपनी पुत्रीके दृढ़ निश्चयको देखकर धर्मात्मा नरेशने अधिक आग्रह करना उचित नहीं माना। देवर्षि नारदजीने भी सावित्रीके निश्चयकी प्रशंसा की। राजा अश्वपति कन्यादानकी सब सामग्री लेकर वनमें राजा द्युमत्सेनकी कुटियापर गये और वहाँ उन्होंने विधिपूर्वक अपनी पुत्रीका विवाह सत्यवान् के साथ कर दिया। विवाहकार्य समाप्त होनेपर राजा अश्वपति अपनी राजधानी लौट गये।
पिताके चले जानेपर सावित्रीने सब रत्नजटित गहने और बहुमूल्य वस्त्र उतार दिये। जब सावित्रीने बहुमूल्य वस्त्र और आभूषण उतारेऔर साससे नम्रतापूर्वक वल्कल वस्त्र पहननेको माँगे, तब सासने विषण्ण होकर उससे कहा- ‘बेटी! तुम राज-कन्या हो। अपने पिताके दिये हुए वस्त्राभूषणोंको पहनो । ‘
सावित्रीने नम्रतापूर्वक उत्तर दिया- ‘मैं आपके पुत्रकी सेविका हूँ। आप तथा मेरे पूज्य श्वशुर एवं मेरे स्वामी जैसे रहते हैं, वैसे ही मैं भी रहूँगी। उससे अधिक सुख मेरे लिये सर्वथा त्याज्य हैं। मैं आपकी अपेक्षा उत्तम वस्त्र एवं आभूषण कैसे पहिन सकती हूँ। मेरे लिये सच्चा आभूषण तो आपलोगोंकी सेवा ही है।’
वह वल्कल-वस्त्र पहिनकर मुनि पत्त्रियोंकी भाँतिरहने लगी। वह अपने शील, सदाचार, इन्द्रिय-संयम, मधुर वाणी तथा सेवापरायणताके कारण सबकी सम्मानभाजन हो गयी। सास-ससुर तथा पतिकी सेवामें वह बराबर तत्पर रहती थी।

Seeing the firm determination of his daughter, the pious king did not consider it appropriate to insist more. Devarshi Naradji also praised Savitri’s determination. King Ashvapati went to King Dyumatsen’s cottage in the forest with all the materials of Kanyadan and there he legally married his daughter to Satyavan. King Ashwapati returned to his capital after the marriage ceremony was over.
When her father left, Savitri took off all her jewels and precious clothes. When Savitri took off her precious clothes and ornaments and humbly asked her mother-in-law to wear Valkal clothes, then the mother-in-law got angry and said to her – ‘Daughter! You are a royal daughter. Wear the clothes and ornaments given by your father. ,
Savitri humbly replied – ‘I am your son’s servant. As you and my respected father-in-law and my master live, so will I live. More pleasures than that are absolutely worthless for me. How can I wear better clothes and ornaments than you? The real ornament for me is the service of all of you.
She dressed in woolen clothes and started living like sage leaves. She became respected by everyone due to her modesty, virtue, sense-control, sweet speech and service. She used to be equally ready to serve her mother-in-law and husband.
