एक सच्चा भक्त था, पर था बहुत ही सीधा उसे छल-कपटका पता नहीं था। वह हृदयसे चाहता था कि मुझे शीघ्र भगवान् के दर्शन हों। दर्शनके लिये वह दिन रात छटपटाता रहता और जो मिलता, उसीसे उपाय पूछता। एक ठगको उसकी इस स्थितिका पता लग गया। वह साधुका वेष बनाकर आया और उससे बोला ‘मैं तुम्हें आज ही भगवान्के दर्शन करा दूँगा। तुम अपना सारा सामान बेचकर मेरे साथ जंगलमें चलो।’ भक्त निष्कपट, सरल हृदयका था और दर्शनकी चाहसे व्याकुल था। उसको बड़ी खुशी हुई और उसने उसी समय जो कुछ भी दाममें मिले, उसीपर अपना सारा सामान बेच दिया और रुपये साथ लेकर वह ठगके साथ चल दिया। रास्ते में एक कुआँ मिला। ठगने कहा, ‘बस, इस कुएँमें भगवान् के दर्शन होंगे, तुम इन मायिक रुपयोंको रख दो और कुएँमें झाँको।’ सरल विश्वासी भक्तने ऐसा ही किया। वह जब कुएँ में झाँकने लगा, तब ठगने एक धक्का दे दिया, जिससे वह तुरंत कुऍमें गिर पड़ा। भगवत्कृपासेउसको जरा भी चोट नहीं लगी और वहीं साक्षात् भगवान्के दर्शन हो गये। वह कृतार्थ हो गया।
ठग रुपये लेकर चंपत हो गया था। भगवान्ने सिपाहीका वेष धरकर उसे पकड़ लिया और उसी कुएँपर लाकर अंदर पड़े हुए भक्तसे सारा हाल कहा और भक्तको कुएँसे निकालना चाहा। भक्त उस समय भगवान्की रूपमाधुरीके सरस रसपानमें मत्त था; उसने कहा – ‘आप मुझको इस समय न छेड़िये। ये ठग हों या कोई, मेरे तो गुरु हैं। सचमुच ही इन्होंने मेरी मायिक पूँजीको हरकर मुझको श्रीहरिके दर्शन कराये हैं। अतएव आप इन्हें छोड़ दीजिये।’ भक्तकी इस बातको सुनकर और सरल विश्वासका ऐसा चमत्कार देखकर ठगके मनमें आया कि सचमुच इसको ठगकर मैं ही ठगा गया हूँ। उसे अपने कृत्यपर बड़ी ग्लानि हुई और उसका हृदय पलट गया। भक्त और भगवान्के सङ्गका प्रभाव भी था ही। वह भी उसी दिनसे अपना दुष्कृत्य छोड़कर भगवान्का सच्चा भक्त बन गया।
He was a true devotee, but he was very straightforward, he did not know deceit. He wanted from the bottom of his heart that I should have the darshan of God soon. Day and night he used to wait for darshan and would ask for remedies from whoever he met. A thug came to know about his condition. He came disguised as a monk and said to him, ‘I will make you see God today itself. You sell all your belongings and come with me to the forest.’ The devotee was sincere, simple-hearted and was distraught with the desire of darshan. He was very happy and at the same time he sold all his belongings for whatever price he got, and taking the money with him, he went with the thug. Found a well on the way. The swindler said, ‘Enough, God will be seen in this well, you keep these illusory rupees and peep into the well.’ The simple believing devotee did the same. When he started peeping into the well, the swindler gave a push, due to which he immediately fell into the well. By the grace of God, he did not get hurt at all and there he saw God in person. He became grateful.
The thug ran away with the money. God dressed as a soldier caught him and brought him to the same well and told the whole situation to the devotee lying inside and wanted to get the devotee out of the well. At that time the devotee was intoxicated with the nectar of the beauty of God; He said – ‘You don’t tease me at this time. Be it thugs or someone else, I have a teacher. Really, he has made me see Sri Hari by defeating my illusionary wealth. So you leave them.’ Hearing this talk of the devotee and seeing such a miracle of simple faith, it occurred to the swindler that I had really been swindled by him. He felt great remorse for his act and his heart turned. The company of the devotee and God had its effect too. From the same day he also left his bad deeds and became a true devotee of God.
