एक बार वशिष्ठ जी विश्वामित्र ऋषि जी के आश्रम में आए। इनका बड़ा स्वागत-सत्कार और आतिथ्य सत्कार किया गया। जब वशिष्ठ जी चलने लगे तो विश्वमित्र ने उन्हें एक हजार वर्ष की अपनी तपस्या का पुण्यफल उपहारस्वरूप दिया। बहुत दिन बाद संयोगवश विश्वामित्र भी वशिष्ठ के आश्रम में पहुंचे। उनका भी वैसा ही स्वागत-सत्कार हुआ। जब विश्वामित्र चलने लगे तो वशिष्ठ जी ने एक दिन के सत्संग का पूर्णफल उन्हें भेंट किया।
विश्वामित्र मन-ही-मन बहुत खिन्न हुए। वशिष्ठ जी को एक हजार वर्ष की तपस्या का पुण्य भेंट किया था। वैसा ही मूल्यवान उपहार न देकर वशिष्ठ जी ने केवल एक दिन के सत्संग का तुच्छ फल दिया। इसका कारण उनकी अनुदारता और मेरे प्रति तुच्छता की भावना का होना ही हो सकता है। यह दोनों ही बातें अनुचित है।
वशिष्ठ जी विश्वामित्र के मनोभावों को ताड़ गए और उनका समाधान करने के लिए विश्वामित्र को साथ लेकर विश्वभ्रमण के लिए चल दिए। चलते-चलते दोनों वहां पहुंचे जहां शेष जी अपने फन पर पृथ्वी का बोझ लादे हुए बैठे थे। दोनों ऋषियों ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया और उनके समीप ठहर गए।
अवकाश का समय देखकर वशिष्ठ जी ने कहा- भगवन्! एक हजार वर्ष का तप अधिक मूल्यवान है या एक दिन का सत्संग? शेष जी ने कहा- इसका समाधान केवल वाणी से करने की अपेक्षा प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव से करना ही ठीक होगा। मैं सिर पर पृथ्वी का इतना भार लिए बैठा हूं।
जिनके पास तपबल है वह थोड़ी देर के लिए इस बोझ को अपने ऊपर ले ले। विश्वामित्र को तपबल पर गर्व था। उन्होंने अपनी संचित एक हजार वर्ष की तपस्या के बल को एकत्रित करके उसके द्वारा पृथ्वी का बोझ अपने ऊपर लेने का प्रयत्न किया,पर वह जरा भी नहीं उठी। अब वशिष्ठ जी को कहा गया कि वे एक दिन के सत्संग से पृथ्वी उठावें। वशिष्ठ जी ने प्रयत्न किया और पृथ्वी को आसानी से अपने ऊपर उठा लिया।
शेष जी ने कहा -“तपबल की महत्ता बहुत है। सारा विश्व उसी की शक्ति से गतिमान है। परन्तु उसकी प्रेरणा और प्रगति का स्रोत सत्संग ही है। इसलिए उसकी महत्ता तप से भी बड़ी है।” विश्वामित्र जी की शंका का समाधान हो गया।
सत्संग से ही तप की प्रेरणा मिलती है। इसलिए तप का पिता होने के कारण सत्संग को अधिक प्रशंसनीय माना गया है। वैसे शक्ति का उद्भव तप से ही होता है
Once Vashishtha ji came to Vishwamitra Rishi ji’s ashram. They were given great welcome and hospitality. When Vashishtha ji started walking, Vishwamitra gifted him the virtue of his penance of one thousand years. After a long time, coincidentally Vishwamitra also reached Vashishtha’s ashram. He was also welcomed in the same way. When Vishwamitra started walking, Vashishtha ji presented him the full fruit of one day’s satsang. Vishwamitra was very upset in his heart. Vashishtha was gifted with the virtue of one thousand years of penance. Similarly, by not giving such a valuable gift, Vashisht ji gave a paltry result of just one day’s satsang. The reason for this can only be because of their condescension and feeling of insignificance towards me. Both these things are unfair. Vashishtha ji went to see Vishwamitra’s feelings and to solve them, took Vishwamitra along with him and went for a world tour. While walking, both of them reached the place where Shesh ji was sitting carrying the burden of the earth on his hood. Both the sages bowed down to him and stayed near him.
Seeing the time of leave, Vashishtha ji said – God! One thousand years of penance is more valuable or one day’s satsang? Shesh ji said- It would be better to solve it with direct experience rather than just by words. I am sitting with so much weight of the earth on my head.
Those who have penance should take this burden on themselves for a while. Vishwamitra was proud of his penance. He tried to take the burden of the earth on himself by gathering the strength of his accumulated one thousand years of penance, but it did not rise at all. Now Vashishtha ji was asked to lift the earth with one day’s satsang. Vashishtha ji tried and easily lifted the earth on himself. Shesh ji said – “The importance of penance is great. The whole world is moving by its power. But the source of his inspiration and progress is satsang. That’s why its importance is greater than penance. Vishwamitra’s doubt got resolved. One gets inspiration for penance only from satsang. That’s why satsang has been considered more praiseworthy because of being the father of penance. By the way, the origin of power is from penance
