अद्भुत साहस

नेपोलियन एल्बा छोड़कर जब पारिक्लकी ओर जा रहे थे, तब उनके एक सेनापति मरचेराने छः हजार सेना लेकर उनका मार्ग रोका। वह नेपोलियनको समाप्त कर देना चाहता था। नेपोलियनके साथ भी सेना थी और वह इतनी कम नहीं थी कि सरलतासे पराजित की जा सके; किंतु नेपोलियनने कहा-‘मैं अपने ही देशवासियोंका रक्त नहीं बहाना चाहता।’

अपनी सेना छोड़कर नेपोलियन घोड़ेपर चढ़कर अकेले शत्रुसेनाकी ओर चल पड़े। लोग हक्के-बक्के देखते रहे; किंतु नेपोलियनने तो शत्रुसेनासे सौ हाथ दूर आकर घोड़ा भी छोड़ दिया और वे पैदल ही आगे बढ़े। इस बार वे केवल दस हाथ दूर रह गये शत्रुसेनासे शत्रुसेनापतिने नेपोलियनको लक्ष्य करके अपनी सेनाको गोली चलानेकी आज्ञा दी। एक अंगुली हिलतीऔर फ्रांसका भाग्य बदल जाता; किंतु कोई अंगुली नहीं हिली। सेनापतिके आदेशपर सैनिकोंने ध्यान ही नहीं दिया। अब तो नेपोलियनने गम्भीर स्वरमें कहा ‘सैनिको ! तुममेंसे कोई अपने सम्राट्की हत्या करना चाहे तो अपनी इच्छा पूरी कर ले। मैं यहाँ खड़ा हूँ।’

कोई बोला नहीं ! सैनिकोंने बंदूकें झुका दीं और | एक-एक करके उन्हें पृथ्वीपर गिराने लगे। पूरी सेना स्वयं निःशस्त्र हो गयी। सैनिक पुकार रहे थे— ‘सम्राट् नेपोलियनकी जय!’

नेपोलियनने एक बूढ़े सैनिककी दाढ़ी आदर पूर्वक हिलाकर कहा – ‘तुमने मुझे मारनेको बंदूक उठायी थी ?’ सैनिकके नेत्र भर आये। उसने अपनी बंदूक दिखा दी। बंदूकमें गोली थी ही नहीं, पूरी सेनाने बंदूकोंमें केवल शब्दमात्र करनेके लिये बारूद भर रखी थी। सु0 सिं0

When Napoleon was leaving Elba and going towards Paris, one of his generals, Marcherane, blocked his way with six thousand soldiers. He wanted to finish Napoleon. Napoleon also had an army and it was not so small that it could be easily defeated; But Napoleon said – ‘I do not want to shed the blood of my own countrymen.’
Leaving his army, Napoleon mounted a horse and went alone towards the enemy army. People kept watching in astonishment; But Napoleon came a hundred hands away from the enemy army and left the horse and they proceeded on foot. This time he was only ten hands away from the enemy army, the enemy commander ordered his army to shoot aiming at Napoleon. The move of a finger and the fortunes of France would have changed; But no finger moved. The soldiers did not pay attention to the orders of the commander. Now Napoleon said in a serious voice, ‘Soldiers! If any of you wants to kill your emperor, then fulfill your wish. I am standing here.’
No one spoke! The soldiers bowed their guns and One by one they started dropping them on the earth. The entire army disarmed itself. The soldiers were calling out – ‘Victory to Emperor Napoleon!’
Napoleon shook the beard of an old soldier respectfully and said – ‘You raised the gun to kill me?’ Soldier’s eyes filled with tears. He showed his gun. There was no bullet in the gun, the whole army had kept gunpowder in the guns just to make words. Su 0 Sin 0
