आँख और कानमें भेद

एक संतके पास तीन मनुष्य शिष्य बननेके लिये गये। संतने उनसे पूछा- ‘बताओ, आँख और कान में कितना अन्तर है?’ इसपर पहलेने कहा- ‘महाराज ! पाँच अंगुलका अन्तर है।’ दूसरेने कहा- ‘महाराज ! जगत् में आँखका देखा हुआ कानके सुने हुएसे अधिक प्रमाणित माना जाता है। यही आँख और कानका भेदहै।’ तीसरा बोला- ‘महाराज आँख और कानमें और भी भेद है। आँखसे कानकी विशेषता है। आँख लौकिक पदार्थोंको ही दिखलाती है; परंतु कान परमार्थतत्त्वको भी जतानेवाला है। यह विशेष अन्तर है ।’ संतने पहलेको शिष्यरूपसे स्वीकार नहीं किया। दूसरेको उपासनाका और तीसरेको ब्रह्मज्ञानका उपदेश दिया।

Three men went to a saint to become disciples. The saint asked him- ‘Tell me, what is the difference between the eye and the ear?’ On this the first said – ‘ Maharaj! There is a difference of five fingers.’ The other said – ‘ Maharaj! In the world, what is seen by the eye is considered more authentic than what is heard by the ear. This is the difference between the eye and the ear. The third said – ‘ Maharaj, there is another difference between the eyes and the ears. Eyes are the specialty of ears. The eye sees worldly things only; But the ear is also the one to reveal the ultimate reality. This is a special difference.’ The saint did not accept the former as a disciple. He preached worship to the second and the knowledge of Brahman to the third.
