मांस सस्ता या महँगा

एक नरेशने अपने दरबारमें सामन्तोंसे पूछा- ‘मांस सस्ता है या महँगा ?’

सामन्तोंने उत्तर दिया- सस्ता है।’ सामन्तोंकी बात सुनकर राजकुमारने कहा- ‘पिताजी! मांस महँगा है।’

नरेशने पुत्रसे कहा- ‘तुम अभी बालक हो, अनुभवहीन हो। सामन्तगण अनुभवी हैं। बात उनकी ही ठीक है।’

राजकुमार बोला- ‘यदि आप कुछ दिन राजसभामेंन आयें तो मैं इस बातको सिद्ध कर दूँगा कि किसकी बात ठीक है।’

राजकुमारकी बात राजाने मान ली। दो-एक दिन बाद राजकुमार एक सामन्तके घर पहुँचे और बोले ‘पिताजी बीमार हैं। राजवैद्य कहते हैं कि किसी शूर सामन्तके हृदयका मांस चाहिये। कृपा करके आप अपने हृदयका दो तोला मांस दे दें। जो भी मूल्य चाहें, आपको दिया जायगा।’ सामन्तने राजकुमारको एक बड़ी रकम भेंट कीऔर कहा – ‘आप मुझपर दया करें। किसी दूसरे सामन्तके पास पधारें ।’

राजकुमार क्रमशः सभी सामन्तोंके पास गये। सबने उन्हें भारी भेंट देकर दूसरेके यहाँ जानेको कहा । राजकुमारने भेंटमें प्राप्त वह विशाल धन राशि लाकर पिताके सम्मुख रख दी। सब बातें बता दीं पिताको दूसरे दिन राजसभामें राजा आये। सामन्तोंसे उन्होंने फिर पूछा- ‘मांस सस्ता है या महँगा ?”

सामन्तोंने तथ्य समझ लिया। उन्होंने मस्तक झुका लिया। राजकुमार बोले

स्वमांसं दुर्लभं लोके लक्षेनापि न लभ्यते ।

अल्पमूल्येन लभ्येत पलं परशरीरजम्॥

‘पिताजी! अपना मांस संसारमें दुर्लभ है। कोई लाख रूपयेमें भी अपने शरीरका मांस देना नहीं चाहता परंतु दूसरेके शरीरका मांस तो थोड़े मूल्यमें ही मिलता है।’ अपने शरीरके समान ही दूसरोंको भी उनका शरीर प्रिय है और उनके लिये उनका मांस वैसा ही बहुमूल्य जैसे अपने लिये अपना मांस। इससे किसी प्राणीकी हंसा नहीं करनी चाहिये, यह राजकुमारका तात्पर्य अब नामन्तोंकी समझमें आया । – सु0 सिं0

A king asked the feudal lords in his court – ‘Is meat cheap or expensive?’
The feudatories replied – it is cheap. After listening to the feudal lords, the prince said – ‘Father! Meat is expensive.’
The king said to the son – ‘You are still a child, you are inexperienced. The feudal lords are experienced. It is right for them.
The prince said – ‘If you come to the Raj Sabha for a few days, I will prove that whose point is correct.’
The king accepted the words of the prince. After a day or two, the prince reached the house of a feudal lord and said, ‘Father is ill. Rajvaidya says that the meat of the heart of a brave warrior is needed. Please give two tolas of meat of your heart. Whatever value you want, it will be given to you. Samantha presented a huge amount to the prince and said – ‘You have mercy on me. Come to another Samantha.’
The prince went to all the feudatories respectively. Everyone gave him a heavy gift and asked him to go to someone else’s place. The prince brought that huge amount of money received as a gift and placed it in front of his father. Told everything to father. The king came to the Raj Sabha the next day. He again asked the feudatories – ‘Is meat cheap or expensive?
The feudal lords understood the fact. He bowed his head. the prince spoke
स्वमांसं रुल्खं लोके लक्षेनापि न लभ्यते।
Low value labhyet palam parsarirjam ॥
‘Father! Our flesh is rare in the world. No one wants to give the flesh of his body even for a lakh of rupees, but the flesh of another’s body is available for a small price only. His body is as dear to others as his body and his flesh is as precious to him as his own flesh to himself. One should not make fun of any creature because of this, the meaning of the prince is now understood by the nominees. – Su 0 Sin 0
