Abraham Lincoln’s childhood was very sad. He was born in a very simple and poor family. Sometimes he used to make a living by driving a boat and sometimes by cutting wood. He used to enjoy reading the lives of great men, but it was difficult for him to read books in the sense of meaning.
He was greatly influenced by the life of George Washington, the first President of America. At one point he learned that a neighbor had a biography of George Washington; They danced happily, but there was fear in their mind whether the neighbor would give the book or not. The neighbor gave the book. Abraham promised to return soon.
Abraham Lincoln had not finished the book when suddenly one day it rained heavily. Abraham Lincoln lived in a shack; The book got damaged due to rain. Abraham felt great sorrow in his heart, but he did not despair. ‘I have committed a great crime.’ The neighbor was surprised by the speech of Abraham, a helpless child of sixteen years. He was very pleased with the simplicity and sincerity of the child.
Abraham said that he would not be able to return the book. I will give you a new book even though it has got wet and damaged due to rain.
‘How can you give a new one? There is no place for even a penny at home and you talk like this? The neighbor scolded.
I believe in my labour. I will work for twice the price of the book by working as a laborer in your field.’ Abraham Lincoln was hopeful. The neighbor liked his proposal.
Abraham Lincoln repaid the price of the book by wages and the biography of George Washington became his property. With his labor he got the first book of his library. – Ra0 Mr.0
