‘नरहरि ! भगवान् विट्ठलनाथने प्रसन्न हो मुझे पुत्र | दिया। मैं आज उन्हें रत्नजटित कमरपट्टा चढ़ाने आया हूँ। पंढरपुरमें सिवा तुम्हारे कोई उसे गढ़ नहीं सकता। इसलिये उठो, भगवान्की कमरका नाप ले आओ और शीघ्र उसे तैयार कर दो।’- एक साहूकारने आकर नरहरि सुनारसे कहा।
नरहरिने पंढरपुरमें रहकर भी कभी भूलकर विट्ठलनाथका दर्शन नहीं किया था। वह परम शैव था। शिवके भजन-पूजनमें सदा अनुरक्त वह भक्त वैष्णवोंके देव विट्ठलनाथसे इतना बचता कि बाहर निकलते समय सिर नीचा कर चलता, ताकि धोखेमें विट्ठल- मन्दिरका शिखर-दर्शन भी न हो जाय।
नरहरिने मन्दिरमें जाना स्पष्टतः अस्वीकार कर दिया। लाचार हो व्यापारी स्वयं ही जाकर नाप ले आया। कमरपट्टा बना और भगवान्को पहनाया गया तो छोटा होने लगा। फिर नरहरिके पास उसे लाया गया। नरहरिने बड़ी कुशलतासे उसे बड़ा कर दिया। अबकी बार वह अपेक्षासे अधिक बड़ा हो गया।
साहूकार चिन्तित हो उठा ‘क्या सचमुच भगवान् हमपर अप्रसन्न हो गये ? क्योंकर वे इसे स्वीकार नहीं करते ?’ उसने आकर नरहरिसे बड़ी अनुनय-विनय की। नरहरि मन्दिर चलने और स्वयं नाप लेनेको तैयार हुआ— इस शर्तपर कि मेरी आँखोंपर पट्टी ।बाँध ले चलो और मैं हाथोंसे टटोलकर नाप ले लूँगा । आँखोंपर पट्टी बाँधे नरहरि सुनार पकड़कर मन्दिरमें लाया गया। उसने मूर्तिको टटोला तो दशभुज, पञ्चवदन, भुजङ्गभूषण, जटाधारी शंकर ईंटपर खड़े मालूम पड़े। अपने आराध्यदेवको पाकर उनके दर्शनसे बचनेकी अपनी बुद्धिपर उसे तरस आयी और उसने अत्यन्त अनुतप्त हो आँखोंसे पट्टी खोली पट्टी खोलते ही पुनः पीताम्बरधारी वनमालीको देख वह सकपकाया और पुनः पट्टी बाँध ली। फिर हाथोंसे टटोला तो वे ही भवानीपति भोलानाथ और पट्टी खोलते ही रुक्मिणीरमण पाण्डुरङ्ग ईंटपर खड़े तथा कटिपर हाथ धरे दिखायी पड़ते ।
नरहरि बड़े असमंजसमें पड़ गया। उसे ईश्वरमें भेद बुद्धि रखनेपर अच्छा पाठ मिल गया। शिवका अनन्य
भक्त होनेके कारण उसे अब ईश्वराद्वैतका रहस्य समझते देर नहीं लगी। उसने दीनवाणीसे प्रभुकी प्रार्थना की। भगवान् प्रसन्न हो उठे। ईश्वरमें भेदबुद्धि नष्ट करना ही उनका लक्ष्य था । उसके सिद्ध हो जानेपर भक्तकी | अनन्यताके वशीभूत हो उन्होंने उसकी प्रसन्नताके लिये अपने सिरपर शिवलिङ्ग धारण कर लिया। तबसे पंढरपुरके विट्ठल भगवान् के सिरपर आज भी शिवलिङ्ग विराजमान है।

‘Narhari! May Lord Vitthalnath be pleased with me son. Gave. Today I have come to offer him a belt studded with gems. No one except you can build it in Pandharpur. That’s why get up, get the measurement of God’s waist and get it ready soon.’- A moneylender came and said to Narhari goldsmith.
Even while living in Pandharpur, Narahari had never visited Vitthalnath by mistake. He was the ultimate Shaivite. The devotee, who was always attached to the hymns and worship of Shiva, avoided the Vaishnavite deity Vitthalnath so much that while going out, he used to walk with his head down, so that he would not even be able to see the peak of the Vitthal temple.
Narahari categorically refused to go to the temple. Being helpless, the merchant himself went and got the measurement. When a belt was made and worn on God, it started getting smaller. Then he was brought to Narhari. Narahari made him grow up very skillfully. This time it turned out to be bigger than expected.
The moneylender got worried ‘Is God really displeased with us? Why don’t they accept it?’ He came and pleaded with Narhari a lot. Narhari agreed to walk to the temple and take the measurements himself – on the condition that you take my blindfold and dam and I will take the measurements by groping with my hands. The blindfolded Narhari goldsmith was caught and brought to the temple. When he groped the idol, Dashabhuj, Panchvadan, Bhujangbhushan, Jatadhari Shankar seemed to be standing on the brick. After seeing his adorable God, he felt pity for his wisdom to avoid seeing him and he opened the bandage from his eyes very much, as soon as he opened the bandage, again seeing the pitambardhari forest owner, he got scared and tied the bandage again. Then when he groped with his hands, he was Bhavanipati Bholanath and as soon as he opened the bandage, Rukminiraman Pandurang was seen standing on the brick and holding his hand on the knife.
Narhari got confused. He got a good lesson on having discriminating intelligence in God. Shiva’s exclusive
Being a devotee, it did not take him long to understand the secret of God’s duality. He prayed to the Lord in a humble voice. God became pleased. His aim was to destroy the discrimination in God. On his being proven, the devotee’s | Being subjugated by uniqueness, he wore Shivling on his head for his happiness. Since then, Shivling is still sitting on the head of Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur.
