अन्त भला तो सब भला

एथेन्स सोलन नामका एक बड़ा भारी विद्वान् रहता था। उसे देशाटनका बड़ा शौक था। एक बार वह घूमता चामा लोडिया देशके राजा कारूंके दरबार में पहुँचा। कारूँअत्यन्त धनी था। उसे अपनी अतुल सम्पत्तिका बड़ा गर्व था। उसने सोलनको अपनी अपरिमित अर्थराशि दिखलाकर यह कहलाना चाहा कि ‘कारूँसे बढ़कर संसारमें और कोईसुखी नहीं है।’ पर ज्ञानी सोलनके चित्तपर उसके वैभवका कोई प्रभाव न पड़ा। उसने केवल यही उत्तर दिया कि ‘संसारमें सुखी वही कहा जा सकता है, जिसका अन्त सुखमय हो।’ इसपर कारूँने बिना किसी विशेष सत्कारके सोलनको अपने यहाँसे बिदा कर दिया।

कालान्तरमें कारूँने पारसके राजा साइरसपर आक्रमण किया। वहाँ वह हार गया और जीते पकड़लिया गया। साइरसने उसे जीवित जलानेकी आज्ञा दी। इसी समय उसे सोलनकी याद आ गयी। उसने तीन बार ‘हाय ! सोलन! हाय सोलन’ की पुकार की। जब साइरसने इसका तात्पर्य पूछा तो उसने सोलनकी सारी बातें सुना दीं। इसका साइरसपर अच्छा प्रभाव पड़ा और उसने कारूँको जीवन-दान तो दिया ही, साथ ही उसका आदर-सत्कार भी किया।

There lived a great scholar named Solon in Athens. He was very fond of country. Once he wandered to the court of King Karu of Chama Lodia country. Karu was very rich. He was very proud of his immense wealth. By showing his infinite wealth to Solan, he wanted to say that ‘there is no one more happy in the world than cars’. But his splendor had no effect on the mind of the wise Solan. He only replied that ‘only one can be called happy in the world, whose end is happy.’ On this Karun sent Solan away from his place without any special hospitality.
Later, Karun attacked Cyrus, the king of Persia. There he was defeated and captured alive. Cyrus ordered to burn him alive. At the same time he remembered Solanki. He thrice ‘Hi! Solon! Hi Solan’ called out. When Cyrus asked the meaning of this, he told all the words of Solon. This had a good effect on Cyrus and he not only gave life to Caru, but also honored him.
