मद्रदेशके राजा अश्वपतिने अपनी परम सुन्दरी कन्या सावित्रीको स्वतन्त्र कर दिया था कि वह अपने योग्य पति चुन ले तो उसीसे उसका विवाह कर दिया जाय। राजाने अपने बुद्धिमान् मन्त्रीको कन्याके साथ भेज दिया था अनेक देशोंमें घूमकर राजकुमारोंको देखनेके लिये। राजा अश्वपतिने अपनी पुत्रीकी योग्यता, धर्मशीलता तथा विचारशक्तिपर विश्वास करके ही उसे यह स्वतन्त्रता दी थी और जब बहुत-से नगरोंकी यात्रा करके सावित्री लौटी, तब यह सिद्ध हो गया कि पिताने उसपर उचित भरोसा किया था। सावित्रीने न तो रूपकी महत्ता दी, न बलकी और न धन अथवा राज्यकी ही। उसने महत्ता दी थी धर्मकी उसने शाल्वदेशके नेत्रहीन राजा सुमत्सेनके पुत्र सत्यवान्को पति बनानेका ि किया था, यद्यपि उस समय राजा द्युमत्सेन शत्रुओंद्वारा राज्यपर अधिकार कर लिये जानेके कारण स्त्री तथापुत्रके साथ वनमें तपस्वी जीवन व्यतीत कर रहे थे। संयोगवश देवर्षि नारदजी उस समय राजा अश्वपतिके यहाँ आये थे जब कि सावित्री अपनी यात्रा समाप्त करके लौटी। देवर्षिने उसका निश्चय जानकर बतलाया ‘निश्चय सत्यवान् सद्गुणी और धर्मात्मा हैं; वे बुद्धिमान्, शूर, क्षमाशील तथा तेजस्वी हैं; किंतु वे अल्पायु हैं। आजसे ठीक एक वर्ष बाद उनकी मृत्यु हो जायगी।’ यह सुनकर राजा अश्वपतिने पुत्रीसे कहा- ‘बेटी ! तुम और किसीको अपने पतिके रूपमें चुन लो । ‘ सावित्रीने नम्रतापूर्वक कहा – ‘पिताजी! एक बार मनसे मैंने जिनका वरण कर लिया, वे ही मेरे पति हैं। चाहे कुछ भी हो, मैं अब और किसीका वरण नहीं कर सकती। कन्याका दान एक बार दिया जाता है और आर्यकन्या एक बार ही पतिका वरण करती है।’

King Ashwapati of Madradesh had freed his most beautiful daughter Savitri to marry her if she chooses a suitable husband. The king had sent his wise minister with the girl to visit many countries to see the princes. King Ashwapati had given this freedom to his daughter only after believing in her ability, piety and thinking power and when Savitri returned after traveling to many cities, it proved that the father had proper faith in her. Savitri neither gave importance to form, nor to power, nor to wealth or kingdom. He had given importance to religion and had decided to marry Satyavan, the son of the blind King Sumatsen of Shalvadesh, although at that time King Dyumatsen was leading an ascetic life in the forest with his wife and son due to the kingdom being taken over by the enemies. Coincidentally Devarshi Naradji came to King Ashwapati at that time when Savitri returned after completing her journey. Knowing his determination, Devarshi said, ‘Surely Satyavan is virtuous and pious; He is intelligent, brave, forgiving and brilliant; But they are short lived. He will die exactly one year from today. Hearing this, King Ashwapati said to his daughter – ‘Daughter! You choose someone else as your husband. ‘ Savitri humbly said – ‘Father! The one whom I married once in MNS, he is my husband. Whatever it is, I can’t describe anyone anymore. A girl’s donation is given once and Aryakanya marries her husband only once.
