गंगा स्नान का पर्व था भारी भीड़ स्नान का पुण्य लाभ करने के लिए जा रही थी। सभी गंगा माता की जय बोल रहे थे। शंकर पार्वती सूक्ष्म शरीर से आकाश मार्ग से उधर होकर निकले। पार्वती ने इतनी भीड़ को एक ही दिन गंगा स्नान के लिए जाने पर आश्चर्य व्यक्त किया और शंकर जी से इसका कारण पूछा।
शंकर जी ने कहा- आज अक्षय तृतीया का पर्व है। शास्त्रों में इस पर्व का बहुत महात्म्य बताया है, और स्नान करने वाले स्वर्ग जाते है ऐसा लिखा है। इसी कारण हर पर्व पर इतने लोग गंगा स्थान को आते है। पार्वतीजी का असमंजस और भी बढ़ गया। उन्होंने कहाँ स्वर्ग से तो हम लोगों का संपर्क निरन्तर रहता है। वहाँ तो थोड़ी जगह है। इतने लोग हर पर्व पर आते है हर साल कई-कई सोमवती अमावस्याएं पड़ती हैं एक वर्ष में ही करोड़ों लोग डुबकी लगाते है। सौ वर्ष में तो उनकी संख्या इतनी हो जायेगी जितनी के लिए वहाँ खड़े होने को भी जगह नहीं है। इसलिए यह महात्म्य गलत मालूम पड़ता है। साथ ही शास्त्र लिखने वाले ऋषि झूठ क्यों बोलेंगे ? यह बात भी समझ में नहीं आती। देव! इस संदेह का निवारण कीजिए।
शिवजी बोले- देवि! स्नान के साथ मन को स्वच्छ बनाने की भी शर्त है। उसका पालन यह स्थान करने वाले करते नहीं। ऐसी दशा में वे मेला मनोरंजन भर कर पाते है। उस पुण्य के भागीदार नहीं बनते जो शास्त्रकारों ने स्वर्ग जाने के रूप में कहा है।
पार्वती जी की शंका का निराकरण ने होते देखकर शिवजी ने उन्हें उदाहरण प्रस्तुत करते हुए वस्तुस्थिति समझाने का प्रयत्न करने की बात सोची। उनने एक नाटक रचा। जिस रास्ते दर्शनार्थी जा रहे थे, उसी से सटकर दोनों वेष बदलकर बैठ गये। शिवजी ने वयोवृद्ध कोढ़ी का रूप बनाया। पार्वती को असाधारण सुन्दरी बनाकर पास में बिठा लिया।
इस विचित्र जोड़े को देखकर दर्शनार्थी पूछते कि आप लोग आपस में कौन है? यहाँ किस प्रयोजन से बैठे है? पूर्व गढन्म के अनुसार पार्वती कहती हैं यह वृद्ध मेरे पति है। इनकी इच्छा गंगा स्नान की हुई। अंग इनके काम नहीं देते सो इन्हें में अपनी पीठ पर लादकर यात्रा पुरी कर रही हूँ। बहुत थक जाने के कारण हम लोग यहाँ बैठे सुस्ता रहे है। जल्दी ही शेष यात्रा फिर आरम्भ करेंगे। कल ही तो सोमवती अमावस्या है।
पूछने वालों में से अधिकाँश की कुटिल दृष्टि थी। इशारों-शब्दों में उनमें से प्रत्येक ने अपने-अपने ढंग से एक ही परामर्श दिया कि इस बुड्ढे को गंगा में छोड़ देना चाहिए और रूपसी को उनके साथ चलना चाहिए। उनके लिए हर प्रकार की सुख सुविधा उपलब्ध कराई जायगी, चैन की जिन्दगी कटेगी।
इन परामर्शों को सुनते-सुनते पार्वती हैरान हो गई कि यह कैसे धर्मात्मा लोग है ? वे भी गंगा पर स्नान करने जा रहे है। इनके मन इतने कलुषित है तो धर्माडम्बर रचने से क्या लाभ ? पार्वतीजी पूछ बैठी नाथ! क्या सभी धर्माडंबरी ऐसे ही होते है ? इस पर शिवजी बोले हाथ की पाँचों उँगली एक समान नहीं होती। इस भीड़ में कुछ सच्चे लोग भी होते हैं। वह भी तुम्हें देखने को मिलेंगे।
प्रतीक्षा के बाद एक भावुक भक्त उधर आया। ध्यान पूर्वक इन पति-पत्नी की परिस्थिति और मनोदशा परखता रहा। गदगद हो गया। सुन्दरी के पद वन्दन करता हुआ बोला- देवी तुम धन्य हो। तुम्हारी जैसी नारियों की धर्म भावना से यह धरती आकाश अपनी जगह पर स्थित है, मैं कुछ आप लोगों की सेवा करना चाहता हूँ। मेरे पास कुछ सत्तू है। इसे आप लोग भी ग्रहण करें। भूखे होंगे न? इसके बाद इन बुद्ध सज्जन को मैं अपनी पीठ पर बिठा कर गंगा स्थान कराऊँगा। आप कहेंगी तो आपके घर तक भी इन्हें पहुँचा आऊँगा।
शिवजी ने पार्वती से कहा- देखा, इतनी भीड़ में केवल यह आदमी तीर्थ सेवन की गंगा स्नान की शर्तों को पूरी कर रहा था। यही है वह जिसको स्वर्ग जाने का वह प्रतिफल मिलेगा, जिसका प्रतिफल वर्णन गंगा स्नान के संबंध में ऋषि मनीषियों ने किया है।

It was the festival of Ganga Snan, a huge crowd was going to take advantage of the holy bath. Everyone was chanting Ganga Mata ki Jai. Shankar Parvati came out from the subtle body through the sky. Parvati expressed surprise at such a large crowd going to bathe in the Ganges on a single day and asked Shankar ji the reason for this.
Shankar ji said – Today is the festival of Akshaya Tritiya. The great importance of this festival has been told in the scriptures, and it is written that those who take bath go to heaven. This is the reason why so many people come to Ganges place on every festival. Parvatiji’s confusion increased even more. He said that we are in constant contact with heaven. There is little space there. So many people come on every festival, every year there are many Somvati Amavasyas, crores of people take a dip in one year. In 100 years, their number will be so much that there is no place even to stand there. That’s why this greatness seems to be wrong. Also, why would the sages who wrote the scriptures lie? This aspect is also not understood. God! Clear this doubt.
Shivji said – Devi! Along with bathing, there is also a condition to make the mind clean. The people of this place do not follow it. In such a situation, they are able to fill the fair with entertainment. They don’t become partakers of that virtue which the writers of the scriptures have called as going to heaven.
Seeing that the doubt of Parvati ji was resolved, Shivji thought of trying to explain the reality by presenting an example to her. He made a play. Both of them changed their clothes and sat adjacent to the path on which the visitors were going. Shivji made the form of an old leper. Made Parvati exceptionally beautiful and made her sit nearby.
Seeing this strange couple, the visitors used to ask who are you among yourselves? For what purpose are you sitting here? According to Purva Gadhanam, Parvati says this old man is my husband. His wish was to bathe in the Ganges. Their organs do not work, so I am completing the journey by carrying them on my back. Being very tired, we are sitting here lazing. Soon the rest of the journey will start again. Tomorrow itself is Somvati Amavasya.
Most of those who asked had crooked vision. In gestures and words, each of them in their own way gave the same advice that this old man should be left in the Ganges and Rupasi should go with him. All kinds of comforts will be made available for them, they will lead a peaceful life.
While listening to these advices, Parvati was surprised that how pious people are these? They are also going to bathe in the Ganges. Their mind is so dirty, then what is the use of creating religious pomp? Parvatiji sat asking Nath! Are all religious fanatics like this? On this Shivji said that all the five fingers of the hand are not equal. There are also some honest people in this crowd. You will get to see that too.
After waiting a passionate devotee came there. Carefully kept examining the condition and mood of these husband and wife. Got mad. While worshiping the feet of the beauty, he said – Goddess, you are blessed. Due to the sense of religion of women like you, this earth and sky are situated in their place, I want to serve some of you. I have some sattu. You people also accept this. You must be hungry, will you not? After this, I will make this Buddha sit on my back and take him to the place of Ganges. If you ask, I will deliver them to your house too.
Shivji said to Parvati- See, in such a crowd, only this man was fulfilling the conditions of Ganga bath for pilgrimage. This is the one who will get the reward of going to heaven, the reward of which has been described by sages regarding bathing in the Ganges.
