इक्ष्वाकु वंश के गुरु वसिष्ठ जी ने
श्री राम की वंशावली का वर्णन
किया जो इस प्रकार हैः
आदि रूप ब्रह्माठ जी से मरीचि
का जन्म हुआ। मरीचि के पुत्र कश्यप
हुये। कश्यप के विवस्वान और विवस्वान के वैवस्वत मनु हुये। वैवस्वतमनु के पुत्र इक्ष्वाकु हुये। इक्ष्वाकु ने अयोध्या
को अपनी राजधानी बनाया
इक्ष्वाकु से सूर्यवंश की कैसे वृद्धि
हुई इक्ष्वाकु के कुक्षि, कुक्षि के विकुक्षि
की संतान बाण हुई बाण के पुत्र
अनरण्य से पृथु पृथु से त्रिशंकु
का जन्म हुआ। त्रिशंकु से धुंधुमार
से युवनाश्व से मान्धाता से सुसन्धि
सुसन्धि के दो पुत्र हुए- ध्रुवसन्धि एवं प्रसेनजित। ध्रुवसन्धि के पुत्र भरत हुए।
भरत के पुत्र असित – असित के
पुत्र सगर का जन्म हुआ। सगर जोकि
अयोध्या के बहुत ही सूर्यवंशी पराक्रमी
राजा थे। राजा सगर के पुत्र असमंज हुए।
असमंज के पुत्र अंशुमान अंशुमान के
पुत्र दिलीप हुए। दिलीप से प्रतापी
भगीरथ पुत्र हुए जिन्होंने मां गंगा
को कठोर तप के बल पर पृथ्वी पर
लाये भगीरथ के पुत्र ककुत्स्थ हुए
और ककुत्स्थ के पुत्र रघु का जन्म हुआ
रघु के जन्म होने पर ही इस वंश का नाम रघुवंश पड़ा रघु बहुत ही पराक्रमी
और ओजस्वी नरेश हुए थे।
रघु के पुत्र प्रवृद्ध हुए। प्रवृद्ध
के पुत्र शंखण और शंखण के पुत्र
सुदर्शन जन्म लिए। वहीं सुदर्शन
के पुत्र अग्निवर्ण और अग्निवर्ण
के पुत्र शीघ्रग का जन्म हुआ।
शीघ्रग के पुत्र मरु हुए और मरु के
पुत्र प्रशुश्रुक हुए। प्रशुश्रुक के पुत्र
अम्बरीश पैदा हुए और अम्बरीश
के पुत्र नहुष हुए। नहुष के पुत्र ययाति
और ययाति के पुत्र नाभाग हुये।
नाभाग के पुत्र का नाम अज था।
अज के पुत्र दशरथ हुये और दशरथ
के ये चार पुत्र रामचन्द्र, भरत, लक्ष्मण
। इस प्रकार भगवान राम का जन्म
