एक बार अर्जुन नीलगिरि पर तपस्या करने गए। द्रौपदी ने सोचा कि यहाँ हर समय अनेक प्रकार की विघ्न-बाधाएं आती रहती हैं। उनके शमन के लिए अर्जुन तो यहाँ हैं नहीं अत: कोई उपाय करना चाहिए। यह सोचकर उन्होंने भगवान श्री कृष्ण का ध्यान किया।
भगवान वहाँ उपस्थित हुए तो द्रौपदी ने अपने कष्टों के निवारण हेतु कोई उपाय बताने को कहा।
इस पर श्रीकृष्ण बोले – एक बार पार्वती जी ने भी शिव जी से यही प्रश्न किया था तो उन्होंने कहा था कि करवाचौथ का व्रत गृहस्थी में आने वाली छोटी-मोटी विघ्न-बाधाओं को दूर करने वाला है। यह पित्त प्रकोप को भी दूर करता है फिर श्रीकृष्ण ने द्रौपदी को एक कथा सुनाई –
प्राचीनकाल में एक धर्मपरायण ब्राह्मण के सात पुत्र तथा एक पुत्री थी। बड़ी होने पर पुत्री का विवाह कर दिया गया। कार्तिक की चतुर्थी को कन्या ने करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा। सात भाइयों की लाडली बहन को चंद्रोदय से पहले ही भूख सताने लगी। उसका फूल सा चेहरा मुरझा गया। भाइयों के लिए बहन की यह वेदना असहनीय थी। अत: वे कुछ उपाय सोचने लगे।
उन्होंने बहन से चंद्रोदय से पहले ही भोजन करने को कहा पर बहन न मानी। तब भाइयों ने स्नेहवश पीपल के वृक्ष की आड़ में प्रकाश करके कहा – ‘देखो! चंद्रोदय हो गया। उठो! अर्ध्य देकर भोजन करो।’
बहन उठी और चंद्रमा को अर्ध्य देकर भोजन कर लिया। भोजन करते ही उसका पति मर गया। वह रोने चिल्लाने लगी। दैवयोग से इन्द्राणी देवदासियों के साथ वहाँ से जा रही थीं। रोने की आवाज़ सुन वे वहाँ गईं और उससे रोने का कारण पूछा।
ब्राह्मण कन्या ने सब हाल कह सुनाया।
इन्द्राणी ने कहा – ‘तुमने करवा चौथ के व्रत में चंद्रोदय से पूर्व ही अन्न-जल ग्रहण कर लिया, इसी से तुम्हारे पति की मृत्यु हुई है। अब यदि तुम मृत पति की सेवा करती हुई बारह महीनों तक प्रत्येक चौथ को यथाविधि व्रत करो फिर करवा चौथ को विधिवत गौरी, शिव, गणेश, कार्तिकेय सहित चंद्रमा का पूजन करो और चंद्र उदय के बाद अर्ध्य देकर अन्न-जल ग्रहण करो तो तुम्हारे पति अवश्य जीवित हो उठेंगे।’
ब्राह्मण कन्या ने अगले वर्ष 12 माह की चौथ सहित विधिपूर्वक करवा चौथ का व्रत किया। व्रत के प्रभाव से उनका मृत पति जीवित हो गया।
इस प्रकार यह कथा कहकर श्रीकृष्ण द्रौपदी से बोले – ‘यदि तुम भी श्रद्धा एवं विधिपूर्वक इस व्रत को करो तो तुम्हारे सारे दुख दूर हो जाएंगे और सुख-सौभाग्य, धन-धान्य में वृद्धि होगी।’
द्रौपदी ने श्रीकृष्ण के कथनानुसार करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा। उस व्रत के प्रभाव से महाभारत के युद्ध में कौरवों की हार तथा पाण्डवों की जीत हुई।

Once Arjun went to Nilgiri to do penance. Draupadi thought that many types of obstacles come here all the time. Arjun is not here to quench them, hence some solution should be found. Thinking this he meditated on Lord Shri Krishna.
When God appeared there, Draupadi asked him to suggest some solution to her sufferings.
On this Shri Krishna said – Once Parvati ji had also asked the same question to Shiv ji, then he had said that the fast of Karva Chauth will remove the small obstacles coming in the household. It also removes the anger of bile. Then Shri Krishna narrated a story to Draupadi –
In ancient times, a pious Brahmin had seven sons and one daughter. When the daughter grew up, she was married. The girl kept the fast of Karva Chauth on the Chaturthi of Kartik. The beloved sister of seven brothers started feeling hungry even before the moonrise. Her flowery face withered. This pain of the sister was unbearable for the brothers. So they started thinking of some solutions.
He asked his sister to have dinner before moonrise but sister did not agree. Then out of affection the brothers lit a light under the cover of the Peepal tree and said – ‘Look! The moon has risen. get up! Give half a meal and have food.’
The sister got up and served half the food to the moon and had food. Her husband died as soon as he had food. She started crying and screaming. Fortunately, Indrani was leaving from there with the Devadasis. Hearing the sound of crying, she went there and asked him the reason for crying.
The Brahmin girl narrated the whole situation.
Indrani said – ‘During the fast of Karva Chauth, you consumed food and water before moonrise, due to this your husband died. Now, if you, while serving your deceased husband, fast on every Chauth as per the rituals for twelve months, then on Karva Chauth, worship Gauri, Shiva, Ganesha, Kartikeya along with the moon and after the moon rise, offer food and water and take food and water, then your husband Will definitely come back alive.
The Brahmin girl observed the fast of Karva Chauth as per the rituals including Chauth of 12 months in the next year. Due to the effect of fasting her dead husband came alive.
Thus, after telling this story, Shri Krishna said to Draupadi – ‘If you also observe this fast with devotion and method, then all your sorrows will go away and your happiness, good fortune and wealth will increase.’
Draupadi kept the fast of Karva Chauth as per the instructions of Shri Krishna. Due to the effect of that fast, Kauravas were defeated and Pandavas won in the Mahabharata war.
