श्मशानेष्वाक्रीडा स्मरहर पिशाचाः सहचराः |
चिता-भस्मालेपः स्रगपि नृकरोटी-परिकरः ||
अमंगल्यं शीलं तव भवतु नामैवमखिलं |
तथापि स्मर्तॄणां वरद परमं मंगलमसि ||
भावार्थ: आप श्मशान में रमण करते हैं, भूत – प्रेत आपके मित्र हैं, आप चिता भष्म का लेप करते हैं तथा मुंडमाल धारण करते हैं। ये सारे गुण ही अशुभ एवं भयावह जान पड़ते हैं। तब भी हे श्मशान निवासी ! उन भक्तों जो आपका स्मरण करते है, आप सदैव शुभ और मंगल
करते है।
शैव-सिद्धान्तसार में कहा गया है कि प्रलयकाल में शिव के अतिरिक्त दूसरा कोई नहीं रहता, ब्रह्माण्ड श्मशान हो जाता है, उसकी भस्म और रुण्ड-मुण्ड में शिव ही व्यापक होता है, अत: ‘चिताभस्मालेपी’ और ’रुण्डमुण्डधारी’ कहलाता है न कि वह अघोरियों के समान चिता-निवासी है।
कल्पान्तकाले प्रलुठत्कपाले समग्र लोके विपुल श्मशाने |
त्वमेक देवोऽसि तदावशिष्ट श्तिताश्रयो भूतिधर: कपाली ||
भगवान शिव समन्वय के प्रतीक हैं। उनके लिए अच्छा बुरा सब समान है। कोई भी वस्तु उनके लिए अप्रिय नहीं है। श्मशान और राजमहलों का निवास उनके लिए समान है। चंदन और चिताभस्म दोनों को ही वे सहज रूप में स्वीकार करते हैं। भस्म या चिताभस्मलेप शिव के ज्ञान -वैराग्य और विनाशशील विश्व में अविनाशी (भस्म) के वरण का संकेत देता है। सर्वलोकाधिपति होकर भी भगवान शंकर ने विभूति और व्याघ्रचर्म को ही अपना भूषन-बसन बनाकर संसार में वैराग्य को ही श्रेष्ठ बतलाया है। || हर हर महादेव ||

Meaning: You take pleasure in the crematorium, ghosts are your friends, you cover the pyre with ashes and wear a swaddle. All these qualities seem to be inauspicious and frightening. Even then, O crematorium dweller! Those devotees who remember you, may you always be auspicious and happy. does.
