हजार फणों वाले शेषनाग भगवान श्रीहरि के परम भक्त हैं।
वे अपने एक हजार मुखों और दो हजार जिह्वाओं (सांप के मुख में दो जीभ होती हैं) से सदा भगवान श्रीहरि का नाम जप करते रहते हैं।
भगवान शेष सेवा-भक्ति के आदर्श उदाहरण हैं। वे भगवान का पलंग, छत्र, पंखा बन कर श्रीहरि की सेवा करते हैं।
गीता (१०।२९) में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने नागों में शेषनाग को अपना स्वरूप बताते हुए कहा है। मैं नागों में शेषनाग हूँ।
भगवान शेषनाग हजार फणों वाले हैं, कमल की नाल की तरह श्वेत रंग के हैं, मणियों से मण्डित हैं, नीले वस्त्र धारण करते हैं। उनका यह संकर्षण विग्रह समस्त जगत का आधार है; क्योंकि सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी भगवान शेष के एक फण पर राई के दाने के समान स्थित है।
भगवान शेषनाग पृथ्वी को क्यों धारण करते हैं ?
चाक्षुष मन्वन्तर के प्रारम्भ में प्रजापति दक्ष ने महर्षि कश्यप को अपनी ग्यारह कन्याएं पत्नी रूप में प्रदान कीं। उन कन्याओं में से एक कद्रू थी, जिसने करोड़ों महा सर्पों को जन्म दिया।
वे सभी सर्प विष रूपी बल से सम्पन्न, उग्र और पांच सौ फणों से युक्त थे। उन सब में प्रथम व श्रेष्ठ फणिराज ‘शेषनाग’ थे, जो अनन्त एवं परात्पर परमेश्वर हैं।
एक दिन भगवान श्रीहरि ने शेष से कहा—‘इस भूमण्डल को अपने ऊपर धारण करने की शक्ति दूसरे किसी और में नहीं है; इसलिए इस भूलोक को तुम्हीं अपने मस्तक पर धारण करो।
तुम्हारा पराक्रम अनन्त है; इसलिए तुम्हें ‘अनन्त’ कहा गया है। जन-कल्याण के लिए तुम्हें यह कार्य अवश्य करना चाहिए।’
शेष ने भगवान से कहा—‘पृथ्वी का भार उठाने के लिए आप कोई अवधि निश्चित कर दीजिए। जितने दिन की अवधि होगी, उतने समय तक मैं आपकी आज्ञा से भूमि का भार अपने सिर पर धारण करुंगा।’

भगवान ने कहा—‘नागराज ! तुम अपने सहस्त्र मुखों से प्रतिदिन मेरे गुणों को बताने वाले अलग-अलग नए-नए नामों का उच्चारण किया करो।
जब मेरे दिव्य नाम समाप्त हो जाएं, तब तुम अपने सिर से पृथ्वी का भार उतार कर सुखी हो जाना।’

नागराज शेष ने कहा—पृथ्वी का आधार तो मैं हो जाऊंगा, किंतु मेरा आधार कौन होगा ? बिना किसी आधार के मैं जल के ऊपर कैसे स्थित रहूंगा ?
भगवान ने कहा—‘तुम इसकी चिंता मत करो। मैं ‘कच्छप’ बन कर महान भार से युक्त तुम्हारे विशाल शरीर को धारण करुंगा।’
तब नागराज शेष भगवान श्रीहरि को नमस्कार कर पाताल से लाख योजन नीचे चले गए।
वहां अपने हाथ से अत्यंत गुरुतर (भारी) भूमण्डल को पकड़ कर प्रचण्ड पराक्रमी शेष ने अपने एक ही फन पर पृथ्वी को धारण कर लिया।
भगवान अनन्त, (संकर्षण, शेष) के पाताल चले जाने पर ब्रह्माजी की प्रेरणा से अन्य नाग भी उनके पीछे-पीछे चले गए।
कोई अतल में, कोई वितल में, कोई सुतल में और महातल में तथा कितने ही तलातल और रसातल में जाकर रहने लगे।
ब्रह्माजी ने उन सर्पों के लिए पृथ्वी पर ‘रमणक द्वीप’ प्रदान किया।
महाभारत के आदिपर्व की कथा..
महाभारत के आदिपर्व में यह कथा कुछ इस तरह है—
अपने भाइयों का सौतेले भाइयों के झगड़े से परेशान होकर शेषनाग ने उनका साथ छोड़ दिया और विरक्त होकर कठिन तपस्या शुरु कर दी।
वे गंधमादन, बदरिकाश्रम, गोकर्ण और हिमालय की तराई आदि स्थानों पर एकान्तवास में रहते और केवल वायु पीते थे। इससे उनके शरीर का मांस, त्वचा और नाड़ियां बिल्कुल सूख गईं।
उनके धैर्य और तप को देख कर पितामह ब्रह्मा उनके पास आए और पूछा—‘शेष ! तुम्हारे इस घोर तपस्या करने का क्या उद्देश्य है ? तुम प्रजा के हित का कोई काम क्यों नहीं करते हो ?’
शेष जी ने कहा—‘मेरे भाई सौतेली मां विनता और उसके पुत्रों गरुड़ और अरुण से द्वेष करते हैं; इसलिए मैं उनसे ऊब कर तपस्या कर रहा हूँ।
अब मैं तपस्या करके यह शरीर छोड़ दूंगा परंतु मुझे चिंता इस बात की है कि मरने के बाद भी मेरा उन दुष्टों का संग न हो।’
ब्रह्माजी ने कहा—‘मैं तुम्हारे मन और इन्द्रियों के संयम से बहुत प्रसन्न हूँ। चिंता छोड़ कर प्रजा के हित के लिए एक काम करो।
यह सारी पृथ्वी, पर्वत, वन, सागर, ग्राम आदि हिलते-डोलते रहते हैं। तुम इसे इस प्रकार धारण करो कि यह अचल हो जाए।’
शेष जी ने कहा—‘मैं आपकी आज्ञा का पालन कर इस पृथ्वी को इस प्रकार धारण करुंगा, जिससे वह हिले-डुले नहीं। आप इसे मेरे सिर पर रख दीजिए।’
ब्रह्माजी ने कहा—‘शेष ! पृथ्वी तुम्हें मार्ग देगी, तुम उसके भीतर घुस जाओ। ‘
ब्रह्माजी की आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए शेष जी भू-विवर में प्रवेश करके नीचे चले गए और समुद्र से घिरी पृथ्वी को चारों ओर से पकड़ कर सिर पर उठा लिया।
वे तभी से स्थिर भाव में होकर पृथ्वी को धारण किए हुए हैं।

Why do Lord Sheshnag hold the earth?
At the beginning of Chakshush Manvantar, Prajapati Daksha provided his eleven girls as wife to Maharishi Kashyap. One of the girls was Kadru, who gave birth to millions of great snakes.
All of them were full of snake poisonous force, fierce and with five hundred fans. Among them, the first and superior Phaniraj was ‘Sheshnag’, who is eternal and Paratpar God.
One day Lord Srihari said to the rest – ‘There is no power to hold this ground over himself; Therefore, wear this mistake on your forehead.
Your might is eternal; Therefore you have been called ‘eternal’. You must do this work for public welfare. ‘
The rest told God – ‘To lift the load of the earth, you should decide a period. The longer the day, the longer I will wear the load of the land on my head with your orders. ‘ , God said – ‘Nagaraja! You pronounce different new names that tell my qualities daily with your thousand faces.
When my divine name is finished, then you become happy by taking the weight of the earth from your head. ‘

Nagraj Shesh said – I will be the basis of the earth, but who will be my base? How will I stay above water without any basis?

Then Nagaraj greeted the remaining Lord Srihari and went down a million schemes from Patal.
There, by grabbing extremely gravitational (heavy) ground with his hand, the strong mighty balance wearing the earth on his same fun.
When Lord Anant, (Sankarshan, Remaining), the other serpents also followed him with the inspiration of Brahmaji.
Some started living in Atal, some in the distribution, some in Sutal and in Mahatal and how many talaat and abyss.
Brahmaji provided ‘Ramanak Island’ on earth for those snakes.
Story of Adiparva of Mahabharata ..
This story is something like this in the Adiparva of Mahabharata –
Troubled by the quarrel of his brothers’s step brothers, Sheshnag left him and started hard penance.
They lived in solitude at places like Gandhamadan, Badrikashram, Gokarna and Himalayas and drink only air. This dried up the flesh, skin and nerves of their body.
Seeing his patience and penance, Pitamah Brahma came to him and asked – “Special! What is your purpose to do this severe penance? Why don’t you do any work of the interest of the subjects? ‘
Shesha ji said – ‘My brother step mother Vinata and her sons hate Garuda and Arun; That’s why I am doing penance with them.
Now I will leave this body by doing penance, but I have worried that even after death, I should not be with those wicked. ‘
Brahmaji said – ‘I am very happy with the restraint of your mind and senses. Do one thing for the benefit of the subjects, leaving worry.
All these earth, mountains, forests, oceans, villages etc. keep moving. You wear it in such a way that it becomes immovable. ‘
The rest of the ji said-“I will obey your command and hold this earth in such a way that he does not move.” You put it on my head. ‘
Brahmaji said – ‘Expected! Earth will give you the way, you enter it. ,
Following the orders of Brahmaji, the rest of the rest went down and went down and grabbed the earth surrounded by the sea and lifted it on the head.
Since then, they have been holding the earth in a stable house.
