श्री गुरू नानक देव साहिब जी के उत्तराधिकारी के रूप में श्री गुरू रामदास जी मानव कल्याण के कार्यों में व्यस्त हैं इन नाथ पँथियों के दिल में गुरू जी द्वारा तैयार नये नगर को देखने की और उनसे मिलने की तीव्र इच्छा हुई। वे गुरू के चक्क (श्री अमृतसर साहिब जी) पहुँचे। गुरू जी ने उनका हार्दिक स्वागत किया। इन नाथ पँथियों को लोग सिद्ध अथवा योगी कहते थे। इनकी विचारधारा में गृहस्थ में रहते हुए मनुष्य को मोक्ष प्राप्त नहीं हो सकता। जब इन्होंने गुरू के चक्क में अमृत सरोवर तथा नगर का वैभव देखा तो वे गुरू जी के सम्मुख उपस्थित हुए। योगियों ने गुरू जी से कहा: आपने माया के प्रसार के कार्य प्रारम्भ किए हुए हैं, जबकि मोक्ष तो माया के त्याग से मिलता है ? उत्तर में गुरू जी ने कहा: कि प्रकृति की उत्पति सब माया ही तो है, इसके बिना विकास ही नहीं। विकास के बिना मानव सभ्यता फूले-फलेगी कैसे ? सभ्यता के विकास के बिना मोक्ष का क्या अर्थ है ? वास्तव में मोक्ष प्रकृति के नियमों को समझने में है। यह तभी सम्भव है जब मानव सभ्यता का विकास हो। बस हम वही कार्य करते हैं जिससे जन-साधारण को सहज में ज्ञान प्राप्ति हो जाए। इस पर गुरू जी से योगी कहने लगे: कि आप अपने शिष्यों को तो अष्ट योग तो सिखलाते नहीं उनके बिना मन वश में नहीं आ सकता और भटकरन मिट नहीं सकती। मन की शाँति के बिना आत्मदर्शन नहीं होता। आत्मदर्शन के बिना युक्ति नहीं और युक्ति के बिना मुक्ति नहीं मिलती। उत्तर में गुरू जी ने कहा: हमारे शिष्य केवल “भक्ति” द्वारा प्रभु को प्रसन्न कर लेते हैं ये साधारण मनुष्य केवल अन्तःकरण में बसे प्रभु प्रेम से उसकी प्रातःकाल (अमृत बेला) में स्तुति करते हैं। जिससे दिल निर्मल हो जाता है। दिल की पवित्रता ही ज्ञान प्राप्ति का कारण बन जाता है। यही ज्ञान इनको माया में रहते हुए भी माया से उपराम रहना सिखा देता है। जैसे नाव पानी में रहते हुए भी पानी में नहीं डूबती। ठीक वैसे ही हमारे सिक्ख गृहस्थ में जीवन यापन करते हुए माया के बन्धनों से मुक्त रहते हैं वे अपने आध्यात्मिक रँग से दूसरे लोगों को भी खुशियाँ बाँटते हैं। उन योगियों को गुरू जी के कथन में सत्य प्रतीत हुआ और वह उनको नमस्कार करके चले गए।
As the successor of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji, Sri Guru Ramdas Ji is busy in human welfare work, these Nath Panthis had a strong desire to see the new city prepared by Guru Ji and to meet him. They reached Guru’s Chakka (Sri Amritsar Sahib Ji). Guru ji welcomed him heartily. People called these Nath sects as Siddha or Yogi. In their ideology, man cannot attain salvation while living in a household. When he saw the splendor of Amrit Sarovar and the city in the Guru’s circle, he appeared before the Guru. Yogis said to Guruji: You have started the work of spreading Maya, whereas salvation is achieved only by renouncing Maya? In reply, Guru Ji said: The origin of nature is all Maya, without it there is no development. How will human civilization flourish without development? What is the meaning of salvation without the development of civilization? In reality salvation lies in understanding the laws of nature. This is possible only when human civilization develops. We only do that work so that common people can easily attain knowledge. On this the Yogi started saying to Guruji: You don’t teach Ashta Yoga to your disciples, without them the mind cannot be controlled and the wandering cannot be eradicated. Without peace of mind there is no self-realization. Without introspection there is no strategy and without strategy there is no salvation. In reply, Guru Ji said: Our disciples please the Lord only through “bhakti”, these ordinary people only praise Him in the morning (amrit bella) with love for the Lord residing in their hearts. Due to which the heart becomes pure. Purity of heart becomes the reason for attaining knowledge. This knowledge teaches them to remain free from Maya even while living in it. Just like a boat does not sink even when it is in water. In the same way, our Sikhs, while living as householders, remain free from the bondages of Maya and share happiness with other people with their spiritual colours. Those yogis found the truth in Guru ji’s statement and went away after saluting him.
