एक साहूकार था जिसके सात बेटे, सात बहुएं और बेटी थी। सब कोई मिट्टी लेने गई तो मिट्टी खोदते समय नन्द एक के हाथ से स्याम का बच्चा मर गया। तब स्याऊ माता बाली। – कि मैं तेरी कोख बाधूगी। तब नन्द ने सब भाभियों से कहा कि मेरे बदले तुम अपनी कोख बंधवा लो। तो छः भाभियों ने तो मना कर दिया परन्तु छोटी भाभी ने सोचा अगर मैं अपनी कोख नहीं बंधवाऊंगी तो सासुजी नाराज होंगी इसलिए उसने अपनी कोख बंधवा ली। तब उसके बच्चा होता और हाई साते के दिन मर जाता।
एक पण्डित को बुलाकर पूछा कि क्या बात है जो मेरा बच्चा होई साते के दिन मर जाता है। तब उसने कहा कि तू सुरही गाय की सेवा कर। सुरही गाय स्याऊं माता की सहेली है। वह तेरी कोख छोड़ेगी तब तेरा बच्चा जिएगा। वह सुबह जल्दी उठकर सुरही गाय का काम कर आती। गऊ माता ने सोचा कि आजकल कौन मेरी सेवा कर रहा है। मेरी बहुएं तो काम करती हुई लड़ाई करती हैं तो गऊ माता ने सुबह उठकर देखा कि साहूकार के बेटे की बहू है जो सारा काम कर जाती है।
गऊ माता बोली तेरी क्या इच्छा है जो तू मेरा इतना काम करती है ? मांग क्या मांगती है। तो साहूकार की बहू बोली मुझे वचन दो तो गऊ माता ने वचन दे दिया।
तब वह बोली कि स्याऊं माता तुम्हारी सहेली हैं और स्याऊ माता ने मेरी कोख बांधी है सो तुम मेरी कोख छुड़वा दो। तब गऊ माता ने सात समुद्र पार अपनी सहेली के पास जाने लगी तो रास्ते में धूप थी।
वह एक पेड़ के नीचे बैठ गई। थोड़ी देर में एक सांप आया और पेड़ पर गरुड़ पंखनी का बच्चा था जिसको डसने लगा तो साहूकार की बहू ने सांप को मारकर ढाल के नीचे दे दिया और बच्चे को बचा लिया। गरुण पंखनी आई और साहूकार के बेटे की बहू को चोंच मारने लगी तो वह बोली कि मैंने तेरा बच्चा नहीं मारा। यह सांप तेरा बच्चा मार रहा था मैंने बचा लिया। तब गरुड़ पंखनी बोली कि तू क्या मांगती है। वह बोली सात समुद्र पार स्याऊं माता रहती हैं। हमको उसके पास पहुंचा दो तो गरुड़ पंखनी ने उन्हें अपनी पीठ पर बिठा कर स्याऊं माता के पास पहुंचा दिया तो स्याऊं माता बोली आओ बहन बहुत दिन में आई और स्याऊं माता बोली कि मेरे तो सिर में बहुत जूं पड़ गई। फिर साहूकार की बहू ने उसकी सारी जूं निकाल दीं। तब स्याऊं माता बोलीं तूने मेरी बहुत भलाई करी ।
इसलिए तेरे सात बेटे सात बहुएं हों। तो बहू बोली कि मेरे तो एक भी बेटा नहीं सात कहां से होंगे। तब स्याऊं माता बोलीं क्यों नहीं होंगे। तब वह बोली कि पहले मुझे वचन दो। स्याऊं माता ने कहा अगर मैं वचन से फिर जाऊं तो धोबी के घाट पर काकरी हो जाऊं। तब साहूकार की ” बहू ने कहा मेरी कोख तो तेरे पास बंधी पड़ी है। तब स्याऊं माता बोलीं तूने मुझे ठग लिया, मैं तेरी कोख खोलती नहीं परन्तु अब खोलनी पड़ेगी।
जा तेरे घर सात बेटे सात बहुएं मिलेंगी और सात उजमन करियो, सात होई माण्डियो, सात कड़ाही करियो। वह घर गई तो वहां देखा सात बेटे सात बहू बैठी हैं। बहुत धन हो गया। तो उसने सात होई मांडी, सात उजमन करे, सात कड़ाही करीं । सारी जिठानी बोलीं कि सब जल्दी-जल्दी पूजा कर लो नहीं तो वह रोने लग जाएगी। थोड़ी देर में उन्होंने अपने बेटों से कहा कि तुम्हारी चाची रोई क्यों नहीं। तो बच्चों ने देखकर आकर बताया कि चाची के यहां होई मण्ड रही है।
तब जिठानी भागकर गई और देखा कि कोख छुड़ा लाई है। तब वह बोली तुमने तो कोख बंधवाई नहीं, मैंने बंधवा ली। परन्तु स्थाऊं माता ने दया करके मेरी कोख खोल दी। हे स्याऊं माता ! जैसे साहूकार के बेटे की बहू की कोख खोली वैसा कहते सुनते सब परिवार की कोख खोलती जाइयो
