गौ सेवा का फल
आज से लगभग 8 हजार वर्ष पूर्व त्रेता युग में अयोध्या के चक्रवर्ती सम्राट महाराज दिलीप के कोई संतान नहीं थी। एक बार वे अपनी पत्नी के साथ गुरु वसिष्ठ के आश्रम गए। गुरु वसिष्ठ ने उनके अचानक आने का प्रयोजन पूछा। तब राजा दिलीप ने उन्हें अपने पुत्र पाने की इच्छा व्यक्त की और पुत्र पाने के लिए महर्षि से प्रार्थना की।
महर्षि ने ध्यान करके राजा के निःसंतान होने का कारण जान लिया। उन्होंने राजा दिलीप से कहा – “राजन! आप देवराज इन्द्र से मिलकर जब स्वर्ग से पृथ्वी पर आ रहे थे तो आपने रास्ते में खड़ी कामधेनु को प्रणाम नहीं किया। शीघ्रता में होने के कारण आपने कामधेनु को देखा ही नहीं, कामधेनु ने आपको शाप दे दिया कि आपको उनकी संतान की सेवा किये बिना आपको पुत्र नहीं होगा।”
महाराज दिलीप बोले – “गुरुदेव! सभी गायें कामधेनु की संतान हैं। गौ सेवा तो बड़े पुण्य का काम है, मैं गायों की सेवा जरुर करूँगा।”
गुरु वसिष्ठ ने कहा – राजन! मेरे आश्रम में जो नंदिनी नाम की गाय है, वह कामधेनु की पुत्री है। आप उसी की सेवा करें।”
महाराज दिलीप सबेरे ही नंदिनी के पीछे- पीछे वन में गए, वह जब खड़ी होती तो राजा दिलीप भी खड़े रहते, वह चलती तो उसके पीछे चलते, उसके बैठने पर ही बैठते और उसके जल पीने पर ही जल पीते। संध्या के समय जब नंदिनी आश्रम को लौटती तो उसके ही साथ लौट आते। महारानी सुदाक्षिणा उस गौ की सुबह शाम पूजा करती थीं। इस तरह से महाराज दिलीप ने लगातार एक महीने तक नंदिनी की सेवा की।
सेवा करते हुये एक महीना पूरा हो रहा था, उस दिन महाराज वन में कुछ सुन्दर पुष्पों को देखने लगे और इतने में नंदिनी आगे चली गयी। दो – चार क्षण में ही उस गाय के रंभाने की बड़ी करूँ ध्वनि सुनाई पड़ी। महाराज जब दौड़कर वहां पहुंचे तो देखते हैं कि उस झरने के पास एक विशालकाय शेर उस सुन्दर गाय को दबोचे बैठा है शेरकर मारकर गाय को छुडाने के लिए राजा दिलीप ने धनुष उठाया और तरकश से बाण निकालने लगे तो उनका हाथ तरकश से ही चिपक गया। आश्चर्य में पड़े राजा दिलीप से उस विशाल शेर ने मनुष्य की आवाज में कहा – “राजन! मैं कोई साधारण शेर नहीं हूँ। मैं भगवान शिव का सेवक हूँ। अब आप लौट जाइए। मैं भूखा हूँ। मैं इसे खाकर अपनी भूख मिटाऊंगा।”
महाराज दिलीप बड़ी नम्रता से बोले – ” आप भगवान शिव के सेवक हैं, इसलिए मैं आपको प्रणाम करता हूँ। आपने जब कृपा करके अपना परिचय दिया है तो आप इतनी कृपा और कीजिये कि आप इस गौ को छोड़ दीजिये और अगर आपको अपनी क्षुधा ही मिटानी है तो मुझे अपना ग्रास बना लीजिये।”
उस शेर ने महाराज को बहुत समझाया, लेकिन राजा दिलीप नहीं माने और अंततः अपने दोनों हाथ जोड़कर शेर के समीप यह सोच कर नतमस्तक हो गए कि शेर उनको अभी कुछ ही क्षणों में अपना ग्रास बना लेगा।
तभी नंदिनी ने मनुष्य की आवाज में कहा – ” महाराज! आप उठ जाइए। यहं कोई शेर नहीं है। सब मेरी माया थी। मैं तो आपकी परीक्षा ले रही थी। मैं आपकी सेवा से अति प्रसन्न हूँ।”
इस घटना के कुछ महीनो बाद रानी गर्भवती हुई और उन्हें पुत्र रत्न की प्राप्ति हुई। उनके पुत्र का नाम रघु था। महाराज रघु के नाम पर ही रघुवंश की स्थापना हुई। कई पीढ़ियों के बाद इसी कुल में भगवान श्री राम का अवतार हुआ

About 8 thousand years ago, in Treta Yuga, Chakravarti Emperor Maharaj Dilip of Ayodhya had no children. Once he went to Guru Vashishtha’s ashram with his wife. Guru Vashishtha asked the purpose of his sudden arrival. Then King Dilip expressed his desire to get a son of his own and prayed to Maharishi to get a son.
Maharishi meditated and found out the reason for the king’s childlessness. He said to King Dilip – “King! When you were coming from heaven to earth to meet Devraj Indra, you did not pay obeisance to Kamdhenu standing on the way. Being in a hurry, you did not see Kamdhenu, Kamdhenu cursed you that you will not have a son unless you serve his children.
Maharaj Dilip said – “Gurudev! All cows are children of Kamdhenu. Cow service is a very virtuous act, I will definitely serve the cows.”
Guru Vashishtha said – King! The cow named Nandini in my ashram is the daughter of Kamdhenu. You serve him only.”
Maharaj Dilip followed Nandini into the forest early in the morning. Whenever she stood, King Dilip would also stand, if she walked, he would follow her, he would sit only when she sat and drink water only when she drank water. When Nandini returned to the ashram in the evening, he would return with her. Queen Sudakshina used to worship that cow in the morning and evening. In this way Maharaj Dilip served Nandini continuously for a month.
One month of serving was completing, that day Maharaj started looking at some beautiful flowers in the forest and in the meanwhile Nandini went ahead. Within a moment or two, the loud mooing sound of that cow was heard. When the king ran and reached there, he saw that a huge lion was sitting near the waterfall holding that beautiful cow. To free the cow by killing the lion, King Dilip picked up his bow and started taking out arrows from the quiver, but his hand got stuck to the quiver. The huge lion said in a human voice to the surprised King Dilip – “King! I am not an ordinary lion. I am a servant of Lord Shiva. Now you go back. I am hungry. I will satisfy my hunger by eating this.”
Maharaj Dilip said very humbly – “You are the servant of Lord Shiva, hence I salute you.” Since you have kindly introduced yourself, please be so kind that you leave this cow and if you want to satisfy your hunger, then make me your food.”
The lion explained a lot to the king, but King Dilip did not agree and finally folded his hands and bowed down near the lion thinking that the lion would devour him within a few moments.
Then Nandini said in a human voice – “Maharaj! You get up. There is no lion here. Everything was my illusion. I was just testing you. I am very pleased with your service.”
A few months after this incident, the queen became pregnant and was blessed with a son, Ratna. His son’s name was Raghu. Raghuvansh was established in the name of Maharaj Raghu. After many generations, Lord Shri Ram was incarnated in this family.
