ब्रज के मन्दिरों में एक अनोखी परंपरा है। जब वहां कोई भक्त मन्दिर के विग्रह के लिए माला लेकर जाता है तो वहां के पुजारी उस माला को विग्रह से स्पर्श कराकर उसी भक्त के गले में पहना देते हैं। इसके पीछे एक बड़ी प्रीतिकर कथा है।
श्रुति अनुसार अकबर के समय की बात है एक वैष्णव भक्त प्रतिदिन श्रीनाथ जी के लिए माला लेकर जाता था। एक दिन अकबर का सेनापति भी ठीक उसी समय माला लेने पहुंचा जबकि माली के पास केवल 1 ही माला शेष थी। वैष्णव भक्त और अकबर के सेनापति दोनों ही माला खरीदने के लिए अड़ गए। इस धर्मसंकट से मुक्ति पाने के लिए माली ने कहा कि जो भी अधिक दाम देगा उसी को मैं यह माला दूंगा। दोनों ओर से माला के लिए बोली लगनी आरंभ हो गई।
जब माला की बोली अधिक दाम पर पहुंची तो अकबर के सेनापति बोली बंद कर दी। अब वैष्णव भक्त को अपनी बोली के अनुसार दाम देने थे। भक्त तो अंकिचन ब्राह्मण था उसके पास इतना धन नहीं था सो उसने उसके घर सहित जो कुछ भी पास था वह सब बेच कर दाम चुकाकर माला खरीद ली। जैसे ही उसने यह माला श्रीनाथजी की गले में डाली वैसे ही उनकी गर्दन झुक गई। श्रीनाथजी को झुके देख उनके सेवा में लगे पुजारी भयभीत हो गए। उनके पूछने पर जब श्रीनाथ जी ने सारी कथा उन्हें बताकर उस भक्त की सहायता करने को कहा। जब पुजारियों ने उस भक्त का घर सहित सब व्यवस्थाएं पूर्ववत की तब जाकर श्रीनाथ जी सीधे हुए।
तब से आज तक ब्रज में यह परंपरा है कि भक्त की माला श्रीविग्रह को स्पर्श कराकर उसे ही पहना दी जाती है। किंवदंतियों अनुसार यह घटना गोवर्धन स्थित जतीपुरा मुखारविन्द के पास श्री नाथ जी मंदिर की है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि नाथद्वारा में जो श्रीनाथ जी का विग्रह है वह इन्हीं ठाकुर जी का रूप है.

There is a unique tradition in the temples of Braj. When a devotee takes a rosary to the idol of the temple, the priest there touches the rosary to the idol and puts it around the neck of the same devotee. There is a very beautiful story behind this.
According to Shruti, during the time of Akbar, a Vaishnav devotee used to take a garland to Shrinathji every day. One day, Akbar’s commander also arrived at the same time to collect the garland while the gardener had only one garland left. Both Vaishnav devotees and Akbar’s generals were adamant in purchasing the garland. To get relief from this dilemma, the gardener said that he will give this garland to whoever pays the highest price. Bidding for the garland started from both sides.
When the bidding for the garland reached a higher price, Akbar’s commander stopped the bidding. Now the Vaishnav devotee had to pay the price as per his bid. The devotee was Ankichan Brahmin, he did not have that much money, so he sold everything he had including his house and bought the rosary after paying the price. As soon as he put this garland around Shrinathji’s neck, his neck bowed. Seeing Shrinathji bowed down, the priests serving him got scared. When he asked, Shrinath ji told him the whole story and asked him to help that devotee. Only when the priests made all the arrangements including the house of that devotee, Shrinath ji became straight.
From then till today, it is a tradition in Braj that the devotee’s garland is worn after touching the idol. According to legends, this incident took place at Shri Nathji temple near Jatipura Mukharvind located in Govardhan. It is believed that the idol of Shrinath ji in Nathdwara is the form of this Thakur ji.
