इलाहाबाद में प्रयागराज क्षेत्र के संगम तट पर स्थित पुराण प्रसिद्ध लेटे हुए हनुमान जी के विषय में हैं। यह मंदिर धरती का एक मात्र मंदिर है जिसका विवरण पुराणों में विषद रूप से प्राप्त होता है।
यही एक मात्र ऐसा मंदिर है जहाँ हनुमान जी के लेटे हुए रूप का विवरण मिलता है। वह प्रयाग क्षेत्र के संगम तट पर स्थित इलाहाबाद के बड़े हनुमान जी का मंदिर ही है।
जो प्रचलित कथा इस लेटे हुए हनुमान जी के मंदिर के विषय में प्राप्त होती है, वह यह है कि एक बार एक व्यापारी हनुमान जी की भव्य मूर्ति लेकर जलमार्ग से चला आ रहा था। वह हनुमान जी का परम भक्त था। जब वह अपनी नाव लिए प्रयाग के समीप पहुँचा तो उसकी नाव धीरे-धीरे भारी होने लगी तथा संगम के नजदीक पहुँच कर यमुना जी के जल में डूब गई। कालान्तर में कुछ समय बाद जब यमुना जी के जल की धारा ने कुछ राह बदली। तो वह मूर्ति दिखाई पड़ी। उस समय मुसलमान शासक अकबर का शासन चल रहा था। उसने हिन्दुओं का दिल जीतने तथा अन्दर से इस इच्छा से कि यदि वास्तव में हनुमान जी इतने प्रभावशाली हैं तो वह मेरी रक्षा करेगें।
यह सोचकर उनकी स्थापना अपने किले के समीप ही करवा दी। किन्तु यह निराधार ही लगता है। क्योंकि पुराणों की रचना वेदव्यास ने की थी। जिनका काल द्वापर युग में आता है। इसके विपरीत अकबर का शासन चौदहवीं शताब्दी में आता है। अकबर के शासन के बहुत पहले पुराणों की रचना हो चुकी थी। अतः यह कथा अवश्य ही कपोल कल्पित, मनगढ़न्त या एक समुदाय विशेष के तुष्टिकरण का मायावी जाल ही हो सकता है।
जो सबसे ज्यादा तार्किक, प्रामाणिक एवं प्रासंगिक कथा इसके विषय में जनश्रुतियों के आधार पर प्राप्त होती है, वह यह है कि रामावतार में अर्थात त्रेतायुग में जब हनुमानजी अपने गुरु सूर्यदेव से अपनी शिक्षा-दीक्षा पूरी करके विदा होते समय गुरुदक्षिणा की बात चली। भगवान सूर्य ने हनुमान जी से कहा कि जब समय आएगा तो वे दक्षिणा माँग लेंगे। हनुमान जी मान गए। किन्तु फिर भी तत्काल में हनुमान जी के बहुत जोर देने पर भगवान सूर्य ने कहा कि मेरे वंश में अवतरित अयोध्या के राजा दशरथ के पुत्र राम अपने भाई लक्ष्मण एवं पत्नी सीता के साथ प्रारब्ध के भोग के कारण वनवास को प्राप्त हुए हैं। वन में उन्हें कोई कठिनाई न हो या कोई राक्षस उनको कष्ट न पहुँचाएँ इसका ध्यान रखना।
सूर्यदेव की बात सुनकर हनुमान जी अयोध्या की तरफ प्रस्थान हो गए। भगवान सोचे कि यदि हनुमान ही सब राक्षसों का संहार कर डालेंगे तो मेरे अवतार का उद्देश्य समाप्त हो जाएगा। अतः उन्होंने माया को प्रेरित किया कि हनुमान को घोर निद्रा में डाल दो। भगवान का आदेश प्राप्त कर माया उधर चली जिस तरफ से हनुमान जी आ रहे थे। इधर हनुमान जी जब चलते हुए गंगा के तट पर पहुँचे तब तक भगवान सूर्य अस्त हो गए। हनुमान जी ने माता गंगा को प्रणाम किया। तथा रात में नदी नहीं लाँघते, यह सोचकर गंगा के तट पर ही रात व्यतीत करने का निर्णय लिया।
हनुमान जी के हृदय में अपने गुरु की आज्ञा पालन का संदेश घुमड़ रहा था। अतः उन्हें नींद भी नहीं आ रही थी। अतः वह आसन लगाकर ध्यानस्थ हो विचार मग्न हो गए। इधर माया ने जब उन्हें ध्यानस्थ देखा तो वह डर गई। क्योंकि यदि प्रातः काल हो गया तो हनुमान जी अयोध्या पहुँच जाएँगे तथा प्रण के दृढ़निश्चयी हनुमान जी अपना कार्य प्रारम्भ कर देंगे। अचानक हनुमान जी का ध्यान टूटा।
उन्होंने सोचा क्यों न रात सत्संग में बिताई जाए। यह सोच कर वह ऋषि भारद्वाज के आश्रम की तरफ चल पड़े। अब माया और भी निराश हो गई। हनुमान जी भारद्वाज ऋषि के आश्रम पहुँचे। वहाँ वेद पुराण का व्याख्यान चल रहा था। हनुमान जी वहीं बैठकर कथा सुनने लगे। कथा में भारद्वाज ऋषि ने बताया कि कल यहाँ पर जगत के स्वामी तथा अयोध्या नरेश दशरथ के पुत्र के रूप में अवतरित भगवान राम गंगा को पार कर पहुँचने वाले हैं। हनुमान जी प्रसन्न हो गए।
अभी उन्होंने गंगा पार कर अयोध्या जाने का विचार त्याग दिया। तथा वहीं संगम के तट पर ही रह कर भगवान राम की प्रतीक्षा करने का निर्णय लिया। रात्रिकालीन आवश्यक कार्यों को पूरा कर हनुमान जी वहीं संगम के तट पर लेट गए। और उन्हें नींद आ गई। इधर माया को अवसर मिला। और उसने हनुमान जी को धर दबोचा। हनुमान जी घोर निद्रा में चले गए। इधर भगवान राम गंगा पार कर प्रयाग पहुँचे। उन्होंने हनुमान जी को सोते हुए देखा। तथा उनको यह वरदान दिया कि इस सोए हुए हनुमान की मूर्ति के जो दर्शन करेगा। उसे बिना किसी प्रयास के मेरी कृपा प्राप्त होगी। उस व्यक्ति को किसी तरह के भूत-प्रेत या धोखा, षडयंत्र आदि का शिकार नहीं होना पड़ेगा। उसके सारे शत्रु स्वतः ही परास्त हो जाएँगे।
इस तरह हनुमान जी को अमोघ वरदान देकर भगवान राम भारद्वाज ऋषि के आश्रम तथा अक्षयवट का दर्शन करते हुए आगे बढ़ गए। यह वरदान आज अक्षरशः सत्य हो रहा है। इस पुराण प्रसिद्ध सिद्ध हनुमान मंदिर का दर्शन निश्चित ही समस्त बाधा, कष्ट, अरिष्ट आदि को शान्त करता है। इधर प्रातःकाल जब गंगा देवी ने देखा कि एक प्राणी उनकी तरफ ही पाँव फैलाकर सो रहा है। तो उन्होंने अपने आपको अपमानित महसूस करते हुए हनुमान जी को डूबो दिया।
सूर्यदेव ने जब प्रातःकाल अपने शिष्य हनुमान की यह दशा देखी तो उन्होंने गंगा को शाप दिया कि ‘तुम्हारा हृदय मैला है जो अज्ञानवश तूने एक सीधे-सादे प्राणी को दण्ड दिया। तेरा सम्मान करते हुए हनुमान ने रात में तुम्हारे ऊपर से होकर गुजरना अच्छा नहीं समझा और तुम दुर्बुद्धि उसे शाप दे बैठी। जा आज से तू प्राणियों के मरे शरीर एवं गन्दगी ढोने वाली हो जाओ।’ गंगा नदी के दूषित होने से संसार के समस्त देव संबंधी एवं शुभ कार्य बाधित होने लगे। तब समस्त देवताओं ने मिलकर भगवान सूर्य देव की पूजा अर्चना की। तब भगवान सूर्यदेव ने कहा कि ‘जा गंगे! तेरे जल के ऊपर मेरी किरणों के पड़ते ही तुम्हारे जल की पवित्रता बढ़ जाएगी। तथा तुम्हारे जल से मेरा किया गया स्तवन-पूजन कोटि गुना फल देने वाला होगा।’
भगवान सूर्य के कहने पर गंगा ने कहा कि हनुमान चतुर्मास व्यतीत होते ही पुनः भगवान राम की सेवा में उपस्थित हो जाएँगे। तब तक हनुमान जी किष्किन्धा पर्वत पर सुग्रीव की सेना में लगे रहे। चतुर्मास बीतने पर भगवान राम सीता की खोज करते हुए किष्किन्धा पर्वत पर पहुँचे वहाँ पर उनकी मुलाकात भगवान राम से हुई।
अस्तु, कालान्तर में जब मुगल शासन के दौरान अकबर के समय में जब बादशाह अकबर ने उस सिद्ध तपोभूमि को अपने किले के रूप में परिवर्तित करना प्रारम्भ किया। तब उसके दीवार की ही सीध में सोए हुए हनुमान का मंदिर पड़ गया। उसने तत्कालीन हिन्दू धर्मगुरुओं एवं पंडितों को रुपए-पैसे का लोभ देकर तथा डरा-धमका कर उस सोए हनुमान जी के मंदिर को अन्यत्र स्थापित करवाने के लिए राजी किया। हनुमान जी के मूर्ति की खुदाई होने लगी। जब समूची मूर्ति की खुदाई नीचे से कर ली गई। तब उसे उठाया जाने लगा। जब लगातार कोशिश के बावजूद भी मूर्ति नहीं उठी। तब उसे भारी सामान उठाने वाली मशीन से उठाने की कोशिश की जाने लगी। ज्यों ज्यों उस मूर्ति को उठाने की कोशिश की गई। वैसे-वैसे मूर्ति और भी नीचे धसती चली गई।
अन्त में डर कर अकबर ने उस मंदिर को हटवाने का काम बन्द करा दिया। तथा डर के मारे उसने हनुमान जी की बड़ी पूजा-आराधना की। आज भी उसके उतने बड़े भव्य किले की दीवार हनुमान जी के मंदिर की तरफ टेढ़ी ही है।
एक मान्यता और है इस मंदिर के बारे में इस मान्यता के पीछे रामभक्त हनुमान के पुनर्जन्म की कथा जुड़ी हुई है। लंका विजय के बाद बजरंग बलि जब अपार कष्ट से पीडि़त होकर मरणा सन्न अवस्था मे पहुँच गए थे। तो माँ जानकी ने इसी जगह पर उन्हे अपना सिन्दूर देकर नया जीवन और हमेशा आरोग्य व चिरायु रहने का आशीर्वाद देते हुए कहा कि जो भी इस त्रिवेणी तट पर संगम स्नान पर आयेंगा उस को संगम स्नान का असली फल तभी मिलेगा जब वह हनुमान जी के दर्शन करेगा।
यहां स्थापित हनुमान की अनूठी प्रतिमा को प्रयाग का कोतवाल होने का दर्जा भी हासिल है। आम तौर पर जहां दूसरे मंदिरों मे प्रतिमाएँ सीधी खड़ी होती हैं। वही इस मन्दिर मे लेटे हुए बजरंग बली की पूजा होती है। पौराणिक कथाओं के मुताबिक लंका विजय के बाद भगवान् राम जब संगम स्नान कर भारद्वाज ऋषि से आशीर्वाद लेने प्रयाग आए तो उनके सबसे प्रिय भक्त हनुमान इसी जगह पर शारीरिक कष्ट से पीडि़त होकर मूर्छित हो गए।
पवन पुत्र को मरणासन्न देख मां जानकी ने उन्हें अपनी सुहाग के प्रतिक सिन्दूर से नई जिंदगी दी और हमेश स्वस्थ एवं आरोग्य रहने का आशीर्वाद प्रदान किया। मां जानकी द्वारा सिन्दूर से जीवन देने की वजह से ही बजरंग बली को सिन्दूर चढ़ाये जाने की परम्परा है।
संगम आने वाल हर एक श्रद्धालु यहां सिंदूर चढ़ाने और हनुमान जी के दर्शन को जरुर पहुंचता है। बजरंग बली के लेटे हुए मन्दिर मे पूजा-अर्चना के लिए यूं तो हर रोज ही देश के कोने-कोने से हजारों भक्त आते हैं लेकिन मंदिर के महंत आनंद गिरी महाराज के अनुसार राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी के साथ साथ पंडित नेहरू, इंदिरा गांधी, राजीव गांधी, सरदार बल्लब भाई पटेल और चन्द्र शेखर आज़ाद जैसे तमाम विभूतियों ने अपने सर को यहां झुकाया, पूजन किया और अपने लिए और अपने देश के लिए मनोकामना मांगी। यह कहा जाता है कि यहां मांगी गई मनोकामना अक्सर पूरी होती है।
आरोग्य व अन्य कामनाओं के पूरा होने पर हर मंगलवार और शनिवार को यहां मन्नत पूरी होने का झंडा निशान चढऩे के लिए लोग जुलूस की शक्ल मे गाजे-बाजे के साथ आते हैं। मन्दिर में कदम रखते ही श्रद्धालुओं को अजीब सी सुखद अनुभूति होती है। भक्तों का मानना है कि ऐसे प्रतिमा पूरे विश्व मे कहीं मौजूद नहीं है।
इलाहाबाद में संगम के निकट स्थित यह मंदिर उत्तर भारत के मंदिरों में अद्वितीय है। मंदिर में हनुमान की विशाल मूर्ति आराम की मुद्रा में स्थापित है। यद्यपि यह एक छोटा मंदिर है फिर भी प्रतिदिन सैकड़ों की तादाद में भक्तगण आते हैं।

This is the only temple where the description of Hanuman ji’s lying form is found. That is the temple of Bade Hanuman ji of Allahabad situated on the banks of Sangam in Prayag area.
The popular story that is found about this temple of reclining Hanuman ji is that once a businessman was walking through the waterways carrying a grand idol of Hanuman ji. He was a great devotee of Hanuman ji. When he reached near Prayag with his boat, his boat gradually started getting heavy and after reaching near the confluence, it drowned in the waters of Yamuna. After some time, the flow of water of Yamuna changed its path. So that statue appeared. At that time the rule of Muslim ruler Akbar was going on. He did this with the desire to win the hearts of Hindus and with the desire from within that if Hanuman ji was really so powerful then he would protect me.
Thinking this, he got it established near his fort. But this seems baseless. Because the Puranas were composed by Vedvyas. Whose period falls in Dwapar Yuga. In contrast, Akbar’s reign falls in the fourteenth century. The Puranas were composed long before Akbar’s rule. Therefore, this story can definitely be imaginary, fabricated or an illusory trap to appease a particular community.
The most logical, authentic and relevant story about this, based on public hearsay, is that in Ramavatar i.e. in Tretayuga, when Hanumanji was leaving after completing his education from his Guru Suryadev, there was talk of Gurudakshina. Lord Surya told Hanuman ji that when the time comes he will ask for Dakshina. Hanuman ji agreed. But immediately, on Hanuman ji’s insistence, Lord Surya said that Ram, son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, descended from my lineage, has gone to exile along with his brother Lakshman and wife Sita due to the enjoyment of destiny. Take care that they do not face any difficulty in the forest or any monster harms them.
After listening to Sun God, Hanuman ji left for Ayodhya. God thought that if Hanuman kills all the demons then the purpose of my incarnation will be defeated. Therefore, he inspired Maya to put Hanuman into deep sleep. After receiving God’s order, Maya went towards the direction from which Hanuman ji was coming. Here, by the time Hanuman ji reached the banks of Ganga, Lord Surya had set. Hanuman ji bowed to Mother Ganga. And thinking that they should not cross the river at night, they decided to spend the night on the banks of Ganga.
The message of following the orders of his Guru was resonating in Hanuman ji’s heart. Hence he was not even able to sleep. Therefore, he sat down and meditated and became engrossed in thoughts. Here when Maya saw him meditating, she got scared. Because if it is morning then Hanuman ji will reach Ayodhya and Hanuman ji, determined in his vow, will start his work. Suddenly Hanuman ji lost his concentration.
He thought why not spend the night in satsang. Thinking this he started towards the ashram of Rishi Bhardwaj. Now Maya became even more disappointed. Hanuman ji reached the ashram of sage Bhardwaj. A lecture on Veda Purana was going on there. Hanuman ji sat there and started listening to the story. In the story, sage Bhardwaj told that tomorrow Lord Ram, incarnated as the lord of the world and the son of Ayodhya king Dasharatha, is going to reach here after crossing the Ganga. Hanuman ji became happy.
Now he gave up the idea of crossing the Ganges and going to Ayodhya. And decided to stay there on the banks of Sangam and wait for Lord Ram. After completing the necessary tasks at night, Hanuman ji lay down on the banks of the Sangam. And he fell asleep. Here Maya got an opportunity. And he caught hold of Hanuman ji. Hanuman ji went into deep sleep. Here Lord Ram crossed Ganga and reached Prayag. He saw Hanuman ji sleeping. And gave him this boon that whoever will see the idol of this sleeping Hanuman. He will receive my blessings without any effort. That person will not have to become a victim of any kind of ghost or deception, conspiracy etc. All his enemies will automatically be defeated.
In this way, after giving an infallible boon to Hanuman ji, Lord Ram moved ahead after visiting the ashram of sage Bhardwaj and Akshayavat. This blessing is literally coming true today. The darshan of this Purana famous Siddha Hanuman temple definitely calms all obstacles, troubles, ill-effects etc. Here in the morning, when Goddess Ganga saw that a creature was sleeping with its legs spread towards her. So feeling insulted, he drowned Hanuman ji.
When Suryadev saw this condition of his disciple Hanuman in the morning, he cursed Ganga that ‘Your heart is dirty because out of ignorance you have punished an innocent creature. Out of respect for you, Hanuman did not consider it good to pass by you at night and you, the foolish one, cursed him. From today onwards you become a carrier of dead bodies and filth of animals. Due to the contamination of the river Ganga, all the God related and auspicious works of the world started getting disrupted. Then all the gods together worshiped Lord Sun. Then Lord Suryadev said, ‘Go Ganga! As soon as my rays fall on your water, the purity of your water will increase. And my praise and worship done with your water will give multifold results.
At the behest of Lord Surya, Ganga said that Hanuman will again be present in the service of Lord Rama as soon as Chaturmas is over. Till then Hanuman ji remained engaged in Sugriva’s army on Kishkindha mountain. After Chaturmas passed, Lord Rama reached Kishkindha mountain in search of Sita, there he met Lord Rama.
Hence, later on, during the Mughal rule, during the time of Akbar, Emperor Akbar started converting that Siddha Tapobhoomi into his fort. Then the temple of sleeping Hanuman was located in line with its wall. He convinced the then Hindu religious leaders and pundits to get the temple of the sleeping Hanuman ji established elsewhere by luring them with money and by threatening them. Excavation of the idol of Hanuman ji started. When the entire statue was excavated from below. Then he started being lifted. When despite continuous efforts the idol did not rise. Then an attempt was made to lift it with a heavy lifting machine. As an attempt was made to lift that idol. Anyway, the statue continued to sink further down.
Finally, out of fear, Akbar stopped the work of removing that temple. And out of fear, he worshiped Lord Hanuman a lot. Even today the wall of that grand fort is tilted towards Hanumanji’s temple.
There is another belief about this temple. Behind this belief is the story of the rebirth of Ram devotee Hanuman. After the victory of Lanka, Bajrang Bali was on the verge of death due to immense pain. So at this very place, Mother Janaki gave him her vermilion and blessed him with a new life and always healthy and long life and said that whoever comes to this Triveni bank for the Sangam bath will get the real fruit of the Sangam bath only when he gets the darshan of Hanuman ji. Will do.
The unique statue of Hanuman installed here also has the status of being the Kotwal of Prayag. Where as in other temples the idols generally stand straight. Bajrang Bali is worshiped lying down in this temple. According to mythology, after conquering Lanka, when Lord Rama came to Prayag after taking bath in Sangam to seek blessings from Rishi Bhardwaj, his favorite devotee Hanuman fainted at this very place after suffering from physical pain.
Seeing Pawan’s son dying, mother Janaki gave him a new life with vermilion, a symbol of her marriage, and blessed him to always remain healthy and fit. There is a tradition of offering vermillion to Bajrang Bali because Mother Janaki gave him life with vermillion.
Every devotee coming to Sangam definitely comes here to offer vermilion and have darshan of Hanuman ji. Thousands of devotees from every corner of the country come every day to offer prayers in the lying temple of Bajrang Bali, but according to the Mahant of the temple, Anand Giri Maharaj, along with Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi Many eminent personalities like , Sardar Ballabhai Patel and Chandra Shekhar Azad bowed their heads here, worshiped and prayed for themselves and their country. It is said that wishes sought here are often fulfilled.
After the fulfillment of health and other wishes, people come here in a procession every Tuesday and Saturday with musical instruments to hoist the flag to mark the fulfillment of the wish. The devotees get a strange pleasant feeling as soon as they step into the temple. Devotees believe that such a statue does not exist anywhere in the world.
Located near Sangam in Allahabad, this temple is unique among the temples of North India. A huge idol of Hanuman is installed in the temple in a resting posture. Although it is a small temple, hundreds of devotees come every day.
