बात तबकी है, जब प्रथम जैन तीर्थंकर श्रीआदिनाथ पृथ्वीपर राज करते थे। राज करते-करते दीर्घकाल व्यतीत हो गया, तब देवलोकमें खलबली मच गयी कि मध्यलोकमें राजा ऋषभनाथ अर्थात् आदिनाथको इसी जन्ममें मोक्ष प्राप्त करना है, और वे महापुरुष अभी संसारी मोह जालमें फँसे हैं, उन्हें सचेत करना है और संसारके प्रति विरक्ति-भाव जगाना है। उन्होंने एक उपाय सोचा कि राजाको नृत्यकलासे अधिक लगाव है, अतः नृत्यकलाके ही माध्यमसे इनमें विरक्त भाव जाग्रत् होगा। तभी वे कल्याणमार्गमें अग्रसर हो सकते हैं।
देवोंने एक ऐसी सुन्दर देवीको राजदरबारमें नृत्य करनेको भेजा, जिसकी अल्प आयु ही अवशेष थी। राजदरवारमें नृत्य प्रारम्भ हुआ, नृत्य करते-करते उस देवांगनाकी आयुके निमेष पूरे होनेको थे, तभी देवोंने दूसरी देवांगनाको पलक झपकते ही उसकी जगह नृत्य करनेको खड़ा कर दिया। आदिपुरुषने अपने अवधि जानसे इस क्षणिक परिवर्तनको जान लिया और मनमें सोचा, अहो ! यह जीवन कितना अथिर असथीर है, मैं अभीतक इस संसारके रागमें फँसा रहा! यह सोचकर राजवस्त्रका त्यागकर, राज्यको अपने पुत्रको सौंप जिनेश्वरी मुद्रा धारण करके वे वनको चल दिये।
इस उदाहरणसे यह प्रमाणित होता है कि संगीत कला, नृत्यकला भी कहीं-कहीं कल्याणका कारण हो जाती है।
This is the time when the first Jain Tirthankar Shri Adinath ruled the earth. A long time passed while ruling, then there was a commotion in the world of gods that in the middle world, King Rishabhnath i.e. Adinath has to attain salvation in this very birth, and those great men are still trapped in the web of worldly attachment, they have to be alerted and a sense of detachment towards the world has to be made. They thought of a solution that the king is more fond of dance, hence, only through dance the feeling of detachment would be awakened in him. Only then can they move forward on the path of prosperity. The gods sent a beautiful goddess, who had only a short life left, to dance in the royal court. The dance started in the royal court, while dancing, the age of that Devangana was about to be completed, then in the blink of an eye the gods made another Devangana stand to dance in her place. Adipurush came to know about this momentary change from his period and thought in his mind, Oh! This life is so unstable, I am still trapped in the attachment of this world! Thinking this, he left the royal clothes, handed over the kingdom to his son, assumed the Jineshwari posture and went to the forest. This example proves that music, art and dance also become a cause of welfare at some places.
