एक हृदय शल्य चिकित्सक अपनी कार को नियमित मरम्मत के लिए मैकेनिक के पास ले गए। वह आमतौर पर मैकेनिक के साथ हँसी मजाक करते रहते थे। एक बार कार मैकेनिक ने कहा, “डॉक्टर साहेब, हम एक-सा काम करते हैं। मैं कारों के इंजन का और आप इंसान के दिलों की मरम्मत का काम करते हैं। लेकिन हमारे काम के बदले जो पारिश्रमिक मिलता है, उसमें भारी अंतर होता है। आपको मुझसे कई गुना अधिक पारिश्रमिक मिलता है! ऐसा क्यों?”
हाँ, बिल्कुल…लेकिन यह बिना कारण नहीं है।” सर्जन ने बड़ी सहजता से कहा।
“ठीक है, मेरी मेहनत देखिए, “मैकेनिक ने समझाना शुरू किया, “पहले एक कार के इंजन की जाँच करो कि यह कैसे चल रहा है, फिर उसको खोलो, उसके सारे वाल्व को ठीक करो, सारे तारों को ठीक करो, आयल की जाँच करो और फिर सब कुछ वापस व्यवस्थित करो। तब इंजन नए जैसा अच्छा काम करता है। काम करते समय, मेरे कपड़े और हाथ भी पूरी तरह से गंदे हो जाते हैं।
मैं कार के इंजन के साथ जो करता हूँ, आप वही मानव दिल के साथ करते हैं। फिर आप अपने आपको महान कैसे समझते हैं? और हमारे काम के पारिश्रमिक में इतना अंतर क्यों है?”
सर्जन कुछ पल शांत रहे और फिर मुस्कुराते हुए उत्तर दिया, मित्र, क्या तुम कार के इंजन को चलते हुए ठीक कर सकते हो…? मैं दिलों पर तब काम करता हूँ, जब वे धड़क रहे होते हैं!”
