भगवान को पुत्र मे पाने के लिए कैसी योग्यता होनी चाहिए—इस संबन्ध में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने संसार की स्त्रियों को शिक्षा देते हुए कहते हैं
जगत की स्त्रियों, देखो ! यदि तुममें से कोई मुझ परब्रह्म पुरुषोत्तम को अपना पुत्र बनाना चाहे तो मैं पुत्र भी बन सकता हूँ; परन्तु पुत्र बनाकर कैसे प्यार किया जाता है, कैसे वात्सल्य भाव से मुझे भजा जाता है, इसकी शिक्षा तुम्हें माता यशोदा से लेनी होगी ।’
एक दिन की बात है–यशोदा माता घर के आवश्यक काम में लगी हुईं थीं और बालकृष्ण माँ की गोद में चढ़ने के लिए मचल रहे थे । माता ने कुछ ध्यान नहीं दिया । इस पर खीझ कर बालकृष्ण रोने लगे और आँगन में लोटने लगे । उसी समय देवर्षि नारद भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की बाल लीलाओं को देखने के लिए वहां आए । उन्होंने देखा, समस्त जगत के स्वामी, सच्चिदानन्द भगवान श्रीकृष्ण माता की गोद में चढ़ने के लिए जमीन पर पड़े रो रहे हैं । इस दृश्य को देखकर देवर्षि नारद गद्गद् हो गये और यशोदा माता को पुकार कर कहने लगे–
‘यशोदे ! तेरा सौभाग्य महान है । क्या कहें, न जाने तूने पिछले जन्मों में तीर्थों में जा-जाकर कितने महान पुण्य किये हैं ? अरी ! जिस विश्वपति, विश्वस्त्रष्टा, विश्वरूप, विश्वाधार भगवान की कृपा को इन्द्र, ब्रह्मा और शिव भी नहीं प्राप्त कर सकते, वही परिपूर्ण ब्रह्म आज तेरी गोद में चढ़ने के लिए जमीन पर पड़ा लोट रहा है ।’
नंद और यशोदा को भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के माता-पिता बनने का सौभाग्य क्यों प्राप्त हुआ—इसके पीछे उनके पूर्व जन्म के एक पुण्यकर्म की कथा इस प्रकार है—
भगवान को पुत्र बनाने के लिए मनुष्य में कैसी योग्यता चाहिए ?
प्राचीन काल में एक ब्राह्मण दम्पत्ति जंगल में कुटिया बनाकर रहते थे । उनकी कुटिया किसी देव-मंदिर के समान बिल्व, चम्पा, जवाकुसुम, तुलसी आदि वृक्षों से ढकी रहती थी । पति का नाम था द्रोण और पत्नी का नाम था धरा देवी । दोनों भगवान के परम भक्त थे और सदैव ठाकुरजी की सेवा-पूजा में मग्न रहते थे । द्रोण भिक्षा मांग कर लाते तो धरा देवी भोजन तैयार करतीं । पति को भोजन कराने के बाद कुछ शेष रहता तो खा लेतीं अन्यथा पानी पीकर ही संतोष कर लेती थीं ।
एक बार द्रोण भिक्षा मांगने के लिए गए । धरा देवी झोंपड़ी में अकेली थीं । उसी समय एक युवक अपने वृद्ध माता-पिता को लेकर वहां आया और धरा देवी से बोला—‘मेरे माता-पिता भूखे हैं, इन्हें खाने के लिए कुछ दीजिए ।’
धरा देवी ने कहा—‘मेरे पति भिक्षा लेने गए हैं, अभी आते होंगे । उनके आने पर मैं आप सबको भोजन कराऊंगी । अभी यह कुशासन और जल ग्रहण कीजिए ।
दैववश उस दिन द्रोण को भिक्षा लेकर आने में देर हो गई । युवक ने क्रोध में धरा देवी से कहा—‘इसका क्या विश्वास कि तुम्हारे पति भिक्षा में कुछ लाएंगे ही । तुम्हारे घर में तो एक मिट्टी की हँडिया ही है । मेरे माता- पिता भूखे हैं । इन्हें जल्दी से भोजन कराना जरुरी है । मैं इन्हें किसी दूसरी जगह ले जाता हूँ ।’
अतिथि घर से भूखा चला जाए, यह कैसे हो सकता है ? भारतीय संस्कृति में अतिथि को भगवान का रूप माना गया है—‘अतिथि देवो भव’ । यदि घर से अतिथि भूखा चला जाए तो वह गृहस्वामी के समस्त पुण्य लेकर और पाप देकर जाता है ।
धरा देवी ने युवक से कहा—‘आप सत्य कहते हैं; किंतु हममें श्रद्धा का अभाव नहीं है । हमारे गृहस्वामी अवश्य हमारी असहाय स्थिति पर दया करेंगे ।’’
युवक ने कहा—‘तुम्हारे गृहस्वामी कौन हैं ?’
धरा देवी बोली—‘यह घर, संसार, यह शरीर—सभी तो उन गृहस्वामी विष्णु का है । हमारे सभी कार्य उन्हीं की सेवा के लिए हैं ।’
युवक ने निष्ठुरता से कहा—‘श्रद्धा से देवताओं की तृप्ति होती है । मनुष्य के पेट की ज्वाला तो श्रद्धा से शान्त होने से रही; उसे तो भोजन चाहिए । मेरे वृद्ध माता पिता भूख से पीड़ित होकर मूर्च्छित हो रहे हैं । अब हमें आज्ञा दो ।
‘जरा रुको, मैं पास के गांव से भोजन लेकर आती हूँ ।’ धरा देवी ने युवक को रोकते हुए कहा ।
धरा देवी ने पास के एक गांव में जाकर बनिए की दुकान से भोजन- सामग्री बंधवा ली । उन्होंने कभी वन से बाहर चरण न रखा था; न ही किसी दुकान से कोई वस्तु खरीदी ही थी; इसलिए उनको यह पता नहीं था कि दुकान से वस्तु लेने पर पैसे देने पड़ते हैं । बनिए ने पैसे मांगे ।
धरा देवी ने कहा—‘मेरे पास तो पैसे नहीं हैं ।’
धरा देवी अत्यंत रूपवती थीं । उनके रूप को देखकर दुकानदार के मन में विकार आ गया । काम विमोहित होकर दुकानदार ने कहा—‘तुम्हारे पास जो है, वही दे दो ।’ ऐसा कह कर बनिए ने धरा देवी के स्तनों की तरफ इशारा किया ।
सरल हृदया धरा देवी समझ न सकीं कि विश्व में इतने अधम जीव भी होते हैं ! जिस हृदय में साक्षात् नारायण निवास करते हैं, उसमें ऐसा कुत्सित विचार भी आ सकता है । माता के पास ईश्वर के उपहार स्वरूप दुग्ध रूपी अमृत-कलश हैं, जिनकी पवित्रतम अमृत रूपी दुग्धधारा से अबोध शिशुओं का पोषण होता है । अतिथि नारायण रूप होता है । अत: मैं अपने नारायण और अतिथि दोनों की सेवा के लिए कुछ भी करुंगी ।
ऐसा विचार कर धरा देवी ने दुकान पर गुड़ आदि काटने की तीखी छुरी रखी थी, उससे अपने दोनों स्तन काट कर बनिए को दे दिए और भोजन-सामग्री लेकर कुटिया की ओर चल दी । यह दृश्य देख कर दुकानदार मूर्च्छित हो गया ।
कुटिया तक पहुंचते हुए धरा देवी का शरीर रक्त से लथपथ हो चुका था । भोजन सामग्री कुटिया में पृथ्वी पर रखते हुए उन्होंने कहा—‘अतिथि रूपी साक्षात् नारायण आप मेरी इस सामग्री को स्वीकार करें, अब मेरे प्राण साथ नहीं दे रहे है ।’ ऐसा कह कर वे पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ीं ।
यह क्या ! ऐसा लगा कुटिया में सहस्त्रों सूर्य एक साथ उदय हो गए हों । उनकी परीक्षा पूर्ण हुई । युवक के रूप में चतुर्भुज, पीताम्बरधारी, श्रीवत्स चिह्न धारी, वनमाली, शंख-चक्र-गदा-पद्म लिए भगवान विष्णु प्रकट हो गए । भगवान शंकर व पार्वती जी माता-पिता के रूप में धरा देवी की परीक्षा करने आए थे । वे धरा देवी के त्याग, साहस व अतिथि सेवा को देख कर अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए ।
भगवान विष्णु ने कहा—‘धरा ! तुमने हमारे भोजन के लिए अपने स्तनों का त्याग किया है । मैंने स्वीकार किया उनको । अत: द्वापर युग में व्रज में अगले जन्म में तुम यशोदा के रूप में अवतीर्ण होगी । मैं तुम्हारे स्तनों के पान के लिए तुम्हारा पुत्र बन कर आऊंगा ।’
धरादेवी ही दूसरे जन्म में यशोदा जी बनीं और द्रोण नंद बाबा हुए ।
भक्ति में भगवान को बांधने की और उन्हें पुत्र तक बनाने की शक्ति होती है ।श्रीमद्भागवत (१०।९।२०) के अनुसार—‘मुक्तिदाता भगवान से जो कृपाप्रसाद यशोदा मैया को मिला, वैसा न ब्रह्माजी को, न शंकरजी को, न अर्धांगिनी लक्ष्मीजी को भी कभी प्राप्त हुआ

Once upon a time, mother Yashoda was engaged in the necessary work of the house and child Krishna was eager to climb on mother’s lap. Mother didn’t pay any attention. Annoyed at this, Balkrishna started crying and started rolling in the courtyard. At the same time Devarshi Narad came there to see the childhood pastimes of Lord Krishna. He saw, Sachchidananda Lord Krishna, the Lord of the whole world, lying on the ground crying to climb into the lap of Mother. Seeing this scene, Devarshi Narad became proud and started calling mother Yashoda and said- ‘Yashode! Your fortune is great. What to say, don’t know how many great virtues you have done in your previous births by going on pilgrimages. Hey! The Lord of the Universe, the creator of the world, the form of the world, the support of the universe, the grace of which even Indra, Brahma and Shiva could not receive, the same perfect Brahma is today lying on the ground to climb into your lap. Why did Nanda and Yashoda get the fortune of becoming Lord Krishna’s parents-the story of a virtuous deed of their previous birth is as follows-
What qualification is needed in a man to make God a son?
In ancient times, a Brahmin couple used to live in a forest by building a cottage. His cottage was covered with Bilva, Champa, Javakusum, Tulsi etc. trees like a temple. Husband’s name was Drona and wife’s name was Dhara Devi. Both were great devotees of God and were always engrossed in the service and worship of Thakurji. If Drona had brought alms, Dhara Devi would have prepared the food. If there was anything left after feeding her husband, she would have eaten it, otherwise she would have satisfied herself by drinking water.
Once Drona went to beg for alms. Dhara Devi was alone in the hut. At the same time a young man came there with his old parents and said to Dhara Devi – ‘My parents are hungry, give them something to eat.’
Dhara Devi said-‘ My husband has gone to beg, he must be coming soon. I will feed you all when they come. Now take this misrule and water.
Miraculously, Drona was late in bringing the alms that day. The young man said to Dhara Devi in anger – ‘ What is the belief that your husband will bring something in alms. There is only an earthen pot in your house. My parents are hungry. It is necessary to feed them quickly. I will take them to some other place.’
How can this happen if the guest leaves the house hungry? In Indian culture, the guest is considered as God-‘Atithi Devo Bhava’. If a guest leaves the house hungry, he takes all the virtues of the householder and goes away by giving away the sins.
Dhara Devi said to the young man – ‘You tell the truth; But we do not lack faith. Our housekeeper will surely take pity on our helpless condition.
The young man said – ‘Who is your housekeeper?’
Dhara Devi said – ‘This house, this world, this body-all belong to that householder Vishnu. All our actions are for the service of Him.
The young man said ruthlessly – ‘The deities are satisfied with faith. The fire in a man’s stomach was kept calm by devotion; He needs food. My old parents are fainting due to hunger. Now order us.
‘Wait a minute, I will bring food from the nearby village.’ Dhara Devi said stopping the young man.
Dhara Devi went to a nearby village and got the food items tied up from the shop of Baniya. He never set foot outside the forest; Nor had bought any item from any shop; That’s why they didn’t know that they have to pay money for buying things from the shop. Baniya asked for money.
Dhara Devi said – ‘I do not have money.’
Dhara Devi was very beautiful. Seeing his appearance, the shopkeeper’s mind got upset. Being enamored of work, the shopkeeper said – ‘Give me what you have.’ By saying this, Baniya pointed towards the breasts of Dhara Devi.
Simple hearted Dhara Devi could not understand that there are so many lowly creatures in the world! In the heart in which Narayan resides, such an ugly thought can also arise. The mother has nectar-pots in the form of milk as a gift from God, whose purest nectar-like milk stream nourishes the innocent babies. Guest is Narayan form. So I will do anything to serve both my Narayan and the guest.
Thinking like this, Dhara Devi had kept a sharp knife for cutting jaggery etc. at the shop, cut both her breasts with it and gave it to the baniya and went towards the cottage with food. The shopkeeper fainted after seeing this scene.
While reaching the cottage, Dhara Devi’s body was soaked in blood. Keeping the food items on the earth in the hut, she said- ‘O Narayan in the form of a guest, please accept this food of mine, now my life is not supporting me.’ Saying this, she fell on the earth.
What is this ! It seemed as if thousands of suns had risen together in the cottage. His exam is over. Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of a young man with quadrilateral, Pitambardhari, Shrivatsa symbol holder, Vanamali, conch-chakra-gada-padma. Lord Shankar and Parvati ji came in the form of parents to test Dhara Devi. He was very happy to see the sacrifice, courage and guest service of Dhara Devi.
Lord Vishnu said – ‘Dhara! You have sacrificed your breasts for our food. I accepted them. Therefore, in the next birth in Vraj in Dwapar Yuga, you will incarnate as Yashoda. I will come as your son to drink from your breasts.’
Dhara Devi became Yashoda ji in the second birth and Drona became Nand Baba.
Devotion has the power to bind God and make him even a son. According to Shrimad Bhagwat (10.9.20)—’Neither Brahmaji, Shankarji, nor Lakshmiji, the half of God, received the grace that Yashoda Maiya received from the savior God. ever received
