एक ग़रीब आदमी था। एक दिन वह राजा के पास गया और बोला- ‘महाराज, मैं आपसे कर्ज़ मांगने आया हूं। कृपा कर आप मुझे पांच हजार रुपये दें। मैं पांच वर्ष के अंदर आपके रुपये वापस कर दूंगा।’ राजा ने उसकी बात पर विश्वास कर उसे पांच हजार रुपये दे दिए। पांच वर्ष बीत जाने के बाद भी जब उस व्यक्ति ने राजा के पांच हजार रुपये नहीं लौटाये तब राजा को मजबूरन उसके घर जाना पड़ा। लेकिन वहां वह व्यक्ति नहीं मिला। जब भी राजा वहां जाता बहाना बना कर उसे वापस भेज दिया जाता। एक दिन फिर राजा उस व्यक्ति के घर गया। वहां और कोई तो नहीं दिखा, एक छोटी लड़की बैठी थी। राजा ने उसी से पूछा- ‘तुम्हारे पिता जी कहा हैं ?’
लड़की बोली- ‘पिताजी स्वर्ग का पानी रोकने गये हैं।’
राजा ने फिर पूछा- ‘तुम्हारा भाई कहां है ?’
लड़की बोली- ‘बिना झगड़ा के झगड़ा करने गये हैं।’
राजा के समझ में एक भी बात नहीं आ रही थी। इसलिए वह फिर पूछता है- ‘तुम्हारी माँ कहां है ?’
लड़की बोली- ‘मां एक से दो करने गई है।’
राजा उसके इन ऊल-जुलूल जवाब से खीझ गया। वह गुस्से में पूछता है- ‘और तुम यहां बैठी क्या कर रही हो ?’
लड़की हंसकर बोली- ‘मैं घर बैठी संसार देख रही हूं।’
राजा समझ गया कि लड़की उसकी किसी भी बात का सीधा जवाब नहीं देगी। इसलिए उसे अब इससे इन बातों का मतलब जानने के लिए प्यार से बतियाना पड़ेगा। राजा ने चेहरे पर प्यार से मुस्कान लाकर पूछा- ‘बेटी, तुमने जो अभी-अभी मेरे सवालों के जवाब दिये, उनका मतलब क्या है ? मैं तुम्हारी एक भी बात का मतलब नहीं समझ सका। तुम मुझे सीधे-सीधे उनका मतलब समझाओ।’
लड़की ने भी मुस्करा कर पूछा – ‘अगर मैं सभी बातों का मतलब समझा दूं तो आप मुझे क्या देंगे ?’
राजा के मन में सारी बातों को जानने की तीव्र उत्कंठा थी। वह बोला- ‘जो मांगोगी, वही दूंगा।’
तब लड़की बोली- ‘आप मेरे पिताजी का सारा कर्ज माफ कर देंगे तो मैं आपको सारी बातों का अर्थ बता दूंगी।’
राजा ने कहा- ‘ठीक है, मैं तुम्हारे पिताजी का सारा कर्ज माफ कर दूंगा। अब तो सारी बातों का अर्थ समझा दो।’
लड़की बोली- ‘महाराज, आज मैं आपको सारी बातों का अर्थ नहीं समझा सकती। कृपा कर आप कल आयें। कल मैं ज़रूर बता दूंगी।’
राजा अगले दिन फिर उस व्यक्ति के घर गया। आज वहां सभी लोग मौजूद थे। वह आदमी, उसकी पत्नी, बेटा और उसकी बेटी भी। राजा को देखते ही लड़की पूछी- ‘महाराज, आपको अपना वचन याद है ना ? ‘
राजा बोला- ‘हां मुझे याद है। तुम अगर सारी बातों का अर्थ बता दो तो मैं तुम्हारे पिताजी का सारा कर्ज माफ कर दूंगा।’
लड़की बोली- ‘सबसे पहले मैंने यह कहा था कि पिताजी स्वर्ग का पानी रोकने गये हैं, इसका मतलब था कि वर्षा हो रही थी और हमारे घर की छत से पानी टपक रहा था। पिताजी पानी रोकने के लिए छत को छा (बना) रहे थे।
वर्षा का पानी आसमान से ही गिरता है और हमलोग तो यही मानते हैं कि आसमान में ही स्वर्ग है। बस, पहली बात का अर्थ यही है। दूसरी बात मैंने कही थी कि भइया बिना झगडा़ के झगड़ा करने गये है। इसका मतलब था कि वे रेंगनी के कांटे को काटने गये थे।
अगर कोई भी रेंगनी के कांटे को काटेगा तो उसके शरीर में जहां-तहां कांटा गड़ ही जायेगा, यानि झगड़ा नहीं करने पर भी झगड़ा होगा और शरीर पर खरोंचें आयेंगी। ‘
राजा उसकी बातों से सहमत हो गया। वह मन-ही-मन उसकी चतुराई की प्रशंसा करने लगा। उसने उत्सुकता के साथ पूछा- ‘और तीसरी-चौथी बात का मतलब बेटी ? ‘
लड़की बोली- ‘महाराज, तीसरी बात मैंने कही थी कि माँ एक से दो करने गई है। इसका मतलब था कि माँ अरहर दाल को पीसने यानि उसे एक का दो करने गई है।
अगर साबुत दाल को पीसा जाय तो एक दाना का दो भाग हो जाता है। यानि यही था एक का दो करना। रही चौथी बात तो उस समय मैं भात बना रही थी और उसमे से एक चावल निकाल कर देख रही थी कि भात पूरी तरह पका है कि नही।
इसका मतलब है कि मैं एक चावल देखकर ही जान जाती कि पूरा चावल पका है कि नहीं । अर्थात् चावल के संसार को मैं घर बैठी देख रही थी।’ यह कहकर लड़की चुप हो गई।
राजा सारी बातों का अर्थ जान चुका था। उसे लड़की की बुद्धिमानी भरी बातों ने आश्चर्य में डाल दिया था। फिर राजा ने कहा- ‘बेटी, तुम तो बहुत चतुर हो। पर एक बात समझ में नही आई कि यह सारी बातें तो तुम मुझे कल भी बता सकती थी, फिर तुमने मुझे आज क्यों बुलाया ?’
लड़की हंसकर बोली- ‘ मैं तो बता ही चुकी हूं कि कल जब आप आये थे तो मैं भात बना रही थी। अगर मैं आपको अपनी बातों का मतलब समझाने लगती तो भात गीला हो जाता या जल जाता, तो माँ मुझे ज़रूर पीटती। फिर घर में कल कोई भी नही था।
अगर मैं इनको बताती कि आपने कर्ज़ माफ कर दिया है तो ये मेरी बात का विश्वास नहीं करते। आज स्वयं आपके मुंह से सुनकर कि आपने कर्ज़ माफ कर दिया है, जहां इन्हें इसका विश्वास हो जायेगा, वहीं खुशी भी होगी। ‘
राजा लड़की की बात सुनकर बहुत ही प्रसन्न हुआ। उसने अपने गले से मोतियों की माला निकाल उसे देते हुए कहा- ‘बेटी, यह लो अपनी चतुराई का पुरस्कार! तुम्हारे पिताजी का कर्ज़ तो मैं माफ कर ही चुका हूं।
अब तुम्हें या तुम्हारे घरवालों को मुझसे बहाना नहीं बनाना पड़ेगा। अब तुम लोग निश्चिंत होकर रहो। अगर फिर कभी किसी चीज की ज़रूरत हो तो बेझिझक होकर मुझसे कहना।’
इतना कहकर राजा लड़की को आशीर्वाद देकर चला गया। लड़की के परिवारवालों ने उसे खुशी से गले लगा लिया।
There was a poor man. One day he went to the king and said – ‘ Maharaj, I have come to ask you for a loan. Please give me five thousand rupees. I will return your money within five years. The king believed his words and gave him five thousand rupees. Even after five years, when that person did not return five thousand rupees to the king, then the king was forced to go to his house. But that person was not found there. Whenever the king went there, he was sent back by making an excuse. One day again the king went to that person’s house. No one else was seen there, a little girl was sitting. The king asked him – ‘Where is your father?’
The girl said – ‘Father has gone to stop the water of heaven.’ The king again asked – ‘Where is your brother?’ The girl said – ‘Have gone to quarrel without quarrel.’ The king could not understand a single thing. That’s why he again asks – ‘Where is your mother?’ The girl said – ‘Mother has gone to do one to two.’ The king got irritated by his silly answers. He angrily asks – ‘And what are you doing sitting here?’ The girl laughed and said – ‘I am watching the world sitting at home.’
The king understood that the girl would not give a straight answer to any of his words. That’s why now he will have to tell it with love to know the meaning of these things. The king asked with a loving smile on his face – ‘Daughter, what is the meaning of the answers you just gave to my questions? I could not understand a single thing you mean. You explain their meaning to me directly.’ The girl also smiled and asked – ‘If I explain the meaning of everything, what will you give me?’ The king had a great eagerness to know everything. He said – ‘I will give you whatever you ask for.’ Then the girl said – ‘If you forgive all the debt of my father, then I will tell you the meaning of everything.’ The king said – ‘Okay, I will forgive all the debt of your father. Now at least explain the meaning of everything.’ The girl said – ‘ Maharaj, today I cannot explain to you the meaning of everything. Please come tomorrow. Tomorrow I will definitely tell.
The king again went to that person’s house the next day. Everyone was present there today. The man, his wife, son and also his daughter. Seeing the king, the girl asked – ‘ Maharaj, do you remember your promise? ,
The king said – ‘ Yes I remember. If you tell me the meaning of everything, I will forgive all your father’s debt.’
The girl said- ‘First of all I said that father has gone to stop the water of heaven, it meant that it was raining and water was dripping from the roof of our house. Father was covering the roof to stop the water.
Rain water falls from the sky and we believe that heaven is in the sky only. That’s the meaning of the first point. Second thing I had said that brother has gone to quarrel without quarrel. This meant that they had gone to cut the thorn of the creeper.
If anyone bites the thorn of a creeper, the thorn will get stuck everywhere in his body, that means even if there is no quarrel, there will be a quarrel and scratches will come on the body. ,
The king agreed with his words. He started praising his cleverness in his mind. He asked with curiosity – ‘And the third-fourth thing means daughter? ,
The girl said – ‘ Maharaj, the third thing I had said is that mother has gone from one to two. It meant that the mother has gone to grind Arhar Dal, that is, to divide it into two.
If whole pulses are ground, then one grain is divided into two parts. Means this was to do two with one. As for the fourth thing, at that time I was making rice and taking out one rice from it, I was checking whether the rice was fully cooked or not.
It means that I can know whether the whole rice is cooked or not just by looking at one rice. That is, I was watching the world of rice sitting at home.’ Saying this the girl became silent.
The king knew the meaning of everything. He was taken aback by the wise words of the girl. Then the king said – ‘Daughter, you are very clever. But I could not understand one thing that you could have told me all these things yesterday also, then why did you call me today?’
The girl laughed and said – ‘ I have already told you that when you came yesterday, I was cooking rice. If I had tried to explain to you the meaning of my words, then the rice would have got wet or burnt, then my mother would have definitely beaten me. Then there was no one in the house yesterday.
If I tell them that you have waived the loan, they will not believe me. Hearing from your own mouth today that you have waived the loan, where they will believe it, there will be happiness. ,
The king was very happy to hear the words of the girl. He took out the garland of pearls from his neck and gave it to her and said- ‘Daughter, take here the prize of your cleverness! I have already forgiven your father’s debt.
Now you or your family members will not have to make excuses to me. Now you guys can be relaxed. If you ever need anything again, feel free to let me know.’
Having said this, the king blessed the girl and went away. The family members of the girl happily embraced her.
