एक बात

उन दिनों विद्यासागर ईश्वरचन्द्रजी बड़े आर्थिक संकटमें थे। उनपर ऋण हो गया था। यह ऋण भी हुआ था दूसरोंकी सहायता करनेके कारण। उस समय उनका प्रेस, प्रेसकी डिपाजिटरी और अपनी लिखी पुस्तकें ही उनकी जीविकाके साधन थे। ऋण चुका देनेके लिये उन्होंने प्रेसकी डिपाजिटरीका अधिकार बेच देनेका निश्चय किया। उनके एक मित्र थे श्रीव्रजनाथजी मुखोपाध्याय । विद्यासागरने मुखोपाध्यायजीसे चर्चा की तो वे बोले-‘यदि आप डिपाजिटरीका अधिकार मुझेदे दें तो मैं उसे आपके इच्छानुसार चलानेका प्रयत्न करूँगा।’

विद्यासागरने सब अधिकार व्रजनाथजीको दे दिया। यह समाचार फैलनेपर अनेक लोग विद्यासागरके पास आये। कई लोगोंने तो कई-कई हजार रुपये देनेकी बात कही; किंतु विद्यासागरने सबको एक ही उत्तर दिया –’मैं एक बार जो कह चुका, उसे बदल नहीं सकता। कोई बीस हजार रुपये दे तो भी अब मैं यह अधिकार दूसरेको नहीं दूँगा ।’ -सु0 सिं0

In those days Vidyasagar Ishwarchandraji was in great financial crisis. He was in debt. This debt was also due to helping others. At that time his press, the depository of the press and the books written by him were the means of his livelihood. To repay the loan, he decided to sell the rights of the depository of the Press. One of his friends was Shrivrajnathji Mukhopadhyay. When Vidyasagar discussed with Mukhopadhyayji, he said – ‘If you give me the rights of the depository, I will try to run it according to your wish.’
Vidyasagar gave all the rights to Vrajnathji. When this news spread, many people came to Vidyasagar. Many people even talked about giving several thousand rupees; But Vidyasagar gave the same answer to everyone – ‘I cannot change what I have said once. Even if someone gives twenty thousand rupees, now I will not give this right to others.’ – Su 0 Sin 0
