An impersonator came to the court of King Bhoj and asked the king for a donation of five rupees. The king said that ‘they can give award to the artist, not charity’. The impersonator asked for three days’ time for the impersonation.
The next day, on a mound outside the capital, a jute-clad ascetic was seen sitting quietly in a samadhi-mudra. Out of curiosity the shepherds gathered there. ‘King! Where did you come from? One of them asked the question. But as if these words did not reach Maharaj’s ears, he remained silent. Neither did his eyes open nor did his body move a bit.
‘Baba, will you accept some alms?’ But he did not get the answer to this also.
Hearing the description of that great ascetic from the shepherds who had returned to the city, the riders of civilized citizens, Seths and courtiers ran out of the city. There were heaps of fruits, flowers, dry fruits and sweets, but the sadhus did not open their eyes.
On the second day, the Prime Minister kept the amount of rupees and gems at his feet and prayed to the Mahatma to open his eyes only once, but this also had no effect on that monk.
Raja Bhoj himself reached there on the third day. Lakhs of Asharfis kept at his feet, they kept praying for the blessings of the monk, but the ascetic remained silent. On the fourth day, the impersonator appeared in the court and demanded a reward of five rupees for his successful impersonation.
‘Idiot! When the glory of the whole state was laid at your feet, you did not even open your eyes even once and now you are begging only for five rupees.’ The king said.
“At that time all the luxuries were insignificant, Maharaj!’ The impersonator replied, ‘Then I had to keep the shame of the disguise, but now art wants its prize.’
