Who is the real priest?
There was a huge temple. After the death of its chief priest, the manager of the temple made an announcement for the appointment of a new priest and put a condition that the one who would come to the temple tomorrow morning and prove himself superior in the knowledge of worship, would be kept as a priest. Hearing this announcement, many priests left for the temple in the morning. The temple was on a hill and the way to reach it was full of thorns and stones. All of them reached the temple by somehow avoiding these complications of the route. The manager asked everyone some questions and mantras. When the examination was about to end, a young priest came there. He was drenched in sweat and his clothes were also torn. When the manager asked the reason for the delay, he said – ‘He had left home very early, but seeing many thorns and stones on the way to the temple, he started removing them, so that the passengers do not suffer. It got late. When the manager asked him the method of worship and some mantras, he told them. The manager said – ‘From today you are the priest of this temple.’
Hearing this, the other priests said – ‘We also have knowledge of the rituals and mantras. Then why is he being made a priest? What is the special quality in him that is not there in all of us?’
The manager said – ‘Knowledge and experience are personal, whereas humanity is always self-oriented. Even animals know about their selfishness. But a true man is the one who leaves his happiness for others. This is what this young man has done. That’s why he is the true priest.
The priests got the answer to their question from this talk of the manager.
