आतिथ्य – निर्वाह

मारवाड़के ही नहीं, समग्र भारतीय इतिहासमें दुर्गादास राठौड़का नाम अमर है। जिस समय औरंगजेबकी सारी कुचेष्टाओंको विफलकर वे कुमार अजीतसिंहकी रक्षामें तत्पर थे, दिल्लीश्वरने अपने पुत्र आजम और अकबरकी अध्यक्षतामें मेवाड़ और मारवाड़को जीतने के लिये महती सेना भेजी। अकबर दुर्गादासके शिष्ट व्यवहार और सौजन्यसे प्रभावित होकर उनसे मिल गया। औरंगजेबको यह बात अच्छी नहीं लगी, वह हाथ धोकर दोनोंके पीछे पड़ गया। अकबर ईरान चला गया। दिल्लीश्वरको जब यह पता चला कि अकबरके पुत्र बुलंद अख्तर और पुत्री सफायतुन्निशा जोधपुरमें ही हैं तो उन्हें दिल्ली लानेके लिये उसने ईश्वरदास नागरको अपना प्रतिनिधि बनाकर भेजा। दुर्गादासने दोनोंको इस बातपर लौटाना स्वीकार कर लिया कि औरंगजेब जोधपुरके राजसिंहासनपर जसवंतसिंहके पुत्र अजीतसिंहका आधिपत्य स्वीकार कर ले। वे सफायतुन्निशाको साथ लेकर दरबारमें उपस्थित हुए, पर बुलन्द अख्तरको जोधपुरमें ही रखा, जिससे औरंगजेब उन्हें शिवाजी महाराजकी ही तरह धोखा न दे सके।

‘बेटी! तुमने अपने जीवनको विधर्मीके संरक्षणमें बिताया है। तुम्हें हमारे धर्मका तनिक भी ज्ञान नहीं है। इसलिये तुम्हें तुरंत कुरानके पाठमें लग जाना चाहिये।’ औरंगजेबने अपनी सोलह सालकी पौत्रीको समझाया;वह ब्रह्मपुरीके शिबिर में था ।

‘यह आप क्या कह रहे हैं, बड़े अब्बा ? सम्माननीय दुर्गादासने केवल पुत्रीकी तरह मेरा लालन-पालन ही नहीं किया, स्वाभिमानी राजपूत सरदारने मुझे कुरानका पाठ पढ़ानेके लिये एक मुस्लिम महिला भी नियुक्त कर दी थी। मुझे सारा का सारा कुरान कण्ठ है। विश्वास न हो तो ईश्वरदास नागरसे ही पूछ लीजिये।’

‘वाह ! क्या बढ़िया बात सुनायी तुमने। इन हिंदुओंकी धार्मिक सहिष्णुता तो इन्हींकी मौलिक सम्पत्ति है। आतिथ्यका मर्म कोई इनसे सीखे।’ औरंगजेबका मस्तक आदरसे विनत हो गया।

‘यह तो हमारा कर्तव्य था, दिल्लीश्वर! समस्त प्राणिमात्र परमात्माकी संतान हैं। सारे धर्मोंमें परमात्माकी ही सत्ता – सत्यकी महिमाका ही वर्णन है। हमारा वैर दिल्लीके राजसिंहासनके अन्यायी अधिपति से है, औरंगजेब और उसकी पौत्रीसे द्वेष ही नहीं है।’ दुर्गादासने शिबिरमें प्रवेश करके दिल्लीश्वरको अपने कथनसे मुग्ध कर लिया।

‘आप देवता हैं, दुर्गादास ! अतिथिका सम्मान करनेवाला परमात्माका प्यारा होता है।’ औरंगजेबने वीर राठौड़को सम्मानपूर्ण स्थानपर आसन प्रदान किया। अजीतसिंह जोधपुरके महाराज मान लिये गये। दुर्गादासने आदरपूर्वक बुलंद अख्तरको दिल्ली भेज दिया।

Not only in Marwar, Durgadas Rathore’s name is immortal in the entire Indian history. At the time when Aurangzeb was ready to protect Kumar Ajit Singh after failing all the mischiefs, Delhishwar sent a huge army under the chairmanship of his son Azam and Akbar to win Mewar and Marwar. Impressed by Durgadas’s polite behavior and courtesy, Akbar met him. Aurangzeb did not like this thing, he washed his hands and followed both of them. Akbar went to Iran. When Delhishwar came to know that Akbar’s son Buland Akhtar and daughter Safayatunnisha were in Jodhpur, he sent Ishwardas Nagar as his representative to bring them to Delhi. Durgadas agreed to return both of them on the condition that Aurangzeb should accept the suzerainty of Jaswant Singh’s son Ajit Singh on the throne of Jodhpur. He attended the court taking Safayatunnisha with him, but kept Buland Akhtar in Jodhpur only, so that Aurangzeb could not betray him like Shivaji Maharaj.
‘daughter! You have spent your life under the protection of heretics. You don’t even have the slightest knowledge of our religion. That’s why you should immediately start reciting the Quran.’ Aurangzeb explained to his sixteen year old granddaughter; He was in the camp of Brahmapuri.
‘What are you saying, big father? Honorable Durgadas not only brought me up like a daughter, the self-respecting Rajput Sardar had also appointed a Muslim lady to teach me the lessons of Quran. I have memorized the entire Quran by heart. If you don’t believe, ask Ishwardas Nagar only.
‘Wow ! What a wonderful thing you told me. The religious tolerance of these Hindus is their fundamental asset. One should learn the meaning of hospitality from him. Aurangzeb’s head bowed in respect.
‘It was our duty, Delhishwar! All living beings are the children of the Supreme Soul. In all the religions, only the existence of God – the glory of Truth is described. Our enmity is with the unjust ruler of the throne of Delhi, there is no enmity with Aurangzeb and his granddaughter. Durgadas entered the camp and mesmerized Delhishwar with his words.
‘You are a god, Durgadas! The one who respects the guest is loved by God. Aurangzeb gave a seat to Veer Rathod at a respectable place. Ajit Singh was accepted as the Maharaja of Jodhpur. Durgadas respectfully sent Buland Akhtar to Delhi.
