विलक्षण दानवीरता

कर्णका वास्तविक नाम तो वसुषेण था। माताके गर्भसे वसुषेण दिव्य कवच और कुण्डल पहिने उत्पन्न हुए थे। उनका यह कवच, जो उनके शरीरसे चर्मकी भाँति लगा था, अस्त्र-शस्त्रोंसे अभेद्य था और शरीरके साथ ही बढ़ता गया था। उनके कुण्डल अमृतसिक्त थे। उन कुण्डलोंके कानोंमें रहते, उनकी मृत्यु सम्भव नहीं थी।अर्जुनके प्रतिस्पर्धी थे कर्ण। सभी जानते थे कि युद्धमें अर्जुनकी समता कर्ण ही कर सकते हैं। युद्ध अनिवार्य जान पड़ता था। पाण्डव-पक्षमें सबको कर्णकी चिन्ता थी। धर्मराज युधिष्ठिरको कर्णके भयसे बहुत बेचैनी होती थी। अन्तमें देवराज इन्द्रने युधिष्ठिरके पास संदेश भेजा—’ कर्णकी अजेयता समाप्त कर देनेकीयुक्ति मैंने कर ली है, आप चिन्ता न करें ।’ अचानक कर्णने रात्रिमें स्वप्रमें एक तेजोमय ब्राह्मणको देखा। वे ब्राह्मण कह रहे थे- ‘वसुषेण ! मैं तुमसे एक वचन माँगता हूँ। कोई ब्राह्मण तुमसे कवच कुण्डल माँगे तो देना मत! ‘

स्वप्नमें भी कर्ण चाँके–’आप कहते क्या हैं? कोई ब्राह्मण मुझसे कुछ माँगे और मैं अस्वीकार कर दूँ?’ स्वप्नमें ही ब्राह्मणने कहा- ‘बेटा! मैं तुम्हारा पिता सूर्य हूँ। देवराज इन्द्र तुम्हें ठग लेना चाहते हैं। मेरी बात मान लो ।’

कर्णने नम्रतापूर्वक उत्तर दिया- ‘आप मेरे पिता हैं, मेरे आराध्य हैं, मैं आपको प्रणाम करता हूँ। आप मुझे क्षमा करें। पर इन्द्र आये या और कोई, ब्राह्मणके रूपमें मेरे पास कोई आयेगा, कुछ याचना करेगा तो प्राणके भयसे कृपणकी भाँति मैं उसे अस्वीकार नहीं कर सकूँगा । ‘ सूर्य अदृश्य हो गये। अपने अकल्पनीय उदार |पुत्रपर उन्हें गर्व था। दूसरे ही दिन देवराज ब्राह्मणके वेशमें पधारे। कर्णका आतिथ्य स्वीकार करके उन्होंने कहा- ‘मैं कुछ याचना करने आया हूँ, पर वचन दो कि दोगे।’

कर्ण बोले- ‘भगवन्! वसुषेणने कभी किसी ब्राह्मणको निराश नहीं किया है। बिना दिये भी यह वचन तो दिया ही हुआ है ब्राह्मणके लिये।’

‘कवच और कुण्डल, जो जन्मसे तुम्हारे शरीरपर हैं।’ इन्द्रको यही माँगना था। कर्णने तलवार उठायी और शरीरकी त्वचा अपने हाथों काटकर रक्तसे भीगे कुण्डल और कवच इन्द्रको दे दिये।

‘तुम्हारा शरीर कुरूप नहीं होगा।’ इन्द्रने आशीर्वाद दिया, किंतु देवराज किसीसे दान लेकर उसे वरदानस्वरूप कुछ दिये बिना स्वर्ग जा नहीं सकते थे। इसलिये कर्णको अपनी अमोघ शक्ति उन्होंने दी और कवच कुण्डल लेकर वे चले गये।

Karna’s real name was Vasushena. From the womb of his mother, Vasushena was born wearing divine shields and earrings. His armor, which was attached to his body like leather, was impervious to weapons and grew with the body. His earrings were soaked with nectar. With those earrings in his ears, his death was not possible. Karna was Arjuna’s competitor. Everyone knew that only Karna could match Arjuna in battle. War seemed inevitable. Everyone on the Pandava side was worried about Karna. Dharmaraja Yudhisthira was very anxious for fear of Karna. Finally, Indra, the king of the gods, sent a message to Yudhisthira: ‘I have made a plan to end Karna’s invincibility, do not worry. Suddenly Karna saw a bright Brahmin in his dream at night. Those Brahmins were saying, ‘Vasushena! I ask you for a promise. If a Brahmin asks you for armor and earrings, don’t give them! ‘ ‘
Even in a dream, Karna chankes, ‘What do you say? Should a Brahmin ask me for something and I refuse?’ In the dream, the Brahmin said, ‘Son! I am your father, the sun. Indra, the king of the gods, wants to cheat you. Obey me.’
Karna humbly replied, ‘You are my father, my adorer, I bow to you. You forgive me. But if Indra comes or someone else comes to me in the form of a Brahmin and asks for something, I will not be able to refuse him like a miser for fear of my life. ‘ The sun disappeared. He was proud of his unimaginably generous |son. The next day, the king of the gods came in the guise of a Brahmin. Accepting Karna’s hospitality, he said, ‘I have come to ask for something, but promise that you will.
Karna said, ‘Lord! Vasushena has never disappointed any Brahmin. Even without giving it, this promise has been given to the Brahmin.
‘The armor and earrings, which have been on your body since birth.’ That was what Indra wanted. Karna raised his sword and cut the skin of the body with his hands and gave the blood-soaked earrings and armor to Indra.
‘Your body will not be ugly. Indra blessed him, but the king of the gods could not go to heaven without taking a gift from someone and giving him something as a gift. So he gave his infallible power to Karna and he left with the shield and earrings.
