ऐसा प्रायः देखा जाता है और संतोंके जीवन वृत्तान्तसे पता चलता है कि बड़े-बड़े संत विज्ञापन, प्रचार और प्रसिद्धिसे दूर भागते हैं, उन्हें ये काँटों की तरह चुभते हैं।
पाँचवीं शताब्दीके प्रसिद्ध संत अरसेनियस प्रचारऔर प्रसिद्धिसे बहुत घबराते थे । वे नितान्त एकान्तसेवी थे। सदा अपनी गुफामें निवास करते हुए परमात्माका स्मरण किया करते थे।
एक दिन सिकन्दरिया नगरके कुलपति थियॉफिलसके संकेतपर एक रोमकी महिला मेलनिया उनसे मिलनेआयी। वह इटलीसे मिश्र केवल उनका दर्शन करनेके लिये ही आयी थी। संत अपनी गुफासे बाहर निकल रहे थे कि धनी महिलाने उनकी चरणधूलि अपने मस्तकपर चढ़ा ली।
‘स्त्रीको घर छोड़कर अकेले बाहर नहीं जाना चाहिये। आप हमारे पास इसलिये आयी हैं कि आप रोममें पहुँचकर लोगोंसे यह कह सकें कि आपको मेरा दर्शन हुआ है। इस तरह आप लोगोंको मेरे पास आनेमें प्रेरणा देंगी। है न यही ध्येय ?’ अरसेनियसके प्रश्नसे महिला लज्जित हो गयी।’आप मुझे सदा याद रखियेगा और भगवान्से मेरे कल्याणके लिये प्रार्थना कीजियेगा।’ महिलाने दीनता पूर्वक निवेदन किया ।
‘मैं तो यह प्रार्थना करूँगा कि मेरे मस्तकसे आपका स्मरण ही मिट जाय।’ संतका कथन था।
महिलाको इस उत्तरसे बड़ा दुःख हुआ पर उसके सिकन्दरिया पहुँचनेपर थियॉफिलसने सान्त्वना दी कि अरसेनियसका आशय शारीरिक स्मरणसे था; संत तो दूसरोंके आत्मकल्याणके लिये सदा भगवान्से प्रार्थना किया ही करते हैं।

It is often seen and it is known from the biographies of saints that big saints run away from advertisement, publicity and fame, they prick them like thorns.
Arsenius, the famous saint of the fifth century, was very afraid of publicity and fame. He was very solitary. He always used to remember God while living in his cave.
One day a Roman woman Melania came to see him at the signal of Theophilus, the patriarch of the city of Alexandria. She had come from Italy to Egypt just to visit him. The saint was coming out of his cave when the rich woman put the dust of his feet on her head.
Women should not leave the house and go out alone. You have come to us so that you can reach Rome and tell people that you have seen me. In this way you will inspire people to come to me. Isn’t this the goal?’ The woman was embarrassed by Arsenius’s question. ‘You will always remember me and pray to the gods for my welfare.’ The woman humbly requested.
‘I will only pray that the memory of you vanishes from my mind.’ It was the statement of the saint.
The woman was deeply saddened by this answer, but on reaching Alexandria, Theophilus consoled her that Arsenius meant physical memory; Saints always pray to God for the welfare of others.
