धनतेरस की कथा

एक बार यमराज ने अपने यमदूतों से प्रश्न किया, “क्या कभी प्राणियों के प्राण लेते समय तुम्हें किसी पर दया आती है?” यमदूतों ने सोचकर कहा – “नहीं महाराज ! उस वक्त तो हम आपकी आज्ञा का पालन कर रहे होते हैं. हमें किसी पर दया कैसे आ सकती है?” यमराज ने फिर पूछा – “संकोच मत करो और यदि कभी तुम्हारा दिल पसीजा हो तो बेझिझक होकर कहो” तब यमदूतों ने कहा – सचमुच एक घटना ऎसी है जिसे देखकर हमारा हृदय पसीज गया था. एक दिन हंस नाम का राजा शिकार पर गया. जंगल में वह अपने साथियों से बिछड़ गया और भटकते-भटकते दूसरे राजा की सीमा में चला गया।

वहाँ एक शासक हेमा था. उसने राजा हंस का बहुत आदर-सत्कार किया. उसी दिन राजा हेमा की रानी ने एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया. ज्योतिषियों ने नक्षत्र गणना करके बताया कि यह बालक विवाह के चार दिन बाद ही मृत्यु को प्राप्त हो जाएगा. राजा हंस ने आज्ञा दी कि इस बालक को यमुना के तट पर एक गुहा में ब्रह्मचारी के रूप में रखा जाए. उस तक स्त्रियों की परछाई भी नहीं पहुंचनी चाहिए किन्तु विधि का विधान कुछ और ही था. संयोग से राजा हंस की पुत्री यमुना के तट पर चली गई और वहाँ जाकर उसने उस ब्रह्मचारी के साथ गन्धर्व विवाह कर लिया. विवाह के चौथे दिन उस राजकुमार की मृत्यु हो गई. उस नवविवाहिता का करुण विलाप सुनकर हमारा हृदय कांप गया कि ऎसी सुन्दर जोड़ी हमने कभी नहीं देखी थी. वे कामदेव तथा रति से कम नहीं थे. इस युवक के प्राण लेते समय हमारे आँसू भी नहीं रुक पाए थे.

सारी बातें सुनकर यमराज ने द्रवित होकर कहा, “क्या करे? विधि के विधान की मर्यादा हेतु हमें ऎसा अप्रिय काम करना पड़ा.”

यमदूतों द्वारा पूछे जाने पर यमराज ने अकाल मृत्यु से बचने का उपाय इस प्रकार कहा – “विधिपूर्वक धनतेरस का पूजन व दीपदान करने से अकाल मृत्यु नहीं होती. जिस-जिस घर में यह पूजन होता है वह घर अकाल मृत्यु के भय से मुक्त रहता है.” इसी घटना से धनतेरस के दिन धन्वंतरी पूजन सहित दीपदान की प्रथा का प्रचलन हुआ.

Once Yamraj asked his messengers of Yama, “Do you ever feel pity for anyone while taking the lives of living beings?” The Yamdoots thought and said – “No Maharaj! At that time we were following your orders. How can we feel pity for someone?” Yamraj again asked – “Don’t hesitate and if ever your heart aches, say it without any hesitation.” Then the messengers of Yam said – Truly there is an incident which made our hearts ache after seeing it. One day a king named Hans went hunting. He got separated from his companions in the forest and wandered into the territory of another king.

There was a ruler Hema. He treated King Hans with great respect. On the same day, King Hema’s queen gave birth to a son. Astrologers calculated the constellations and said that this child would die just four days after the marriage. King Hans ordered that this child be kept as a celibate in a cave on the banks of Yamuna. Even the shadow of women should not reach him, but the rule of law was different. Coincidentally, King Hans’s daughter went to the banks of Yamuna and there she married a Gandharva with that celibate. The prince died on the fourth day of the marriage. Hearing the pitiful lamentation of the newlyweds, our hearts trembled as we had never seen such a beautiful couple. He was no less than Kamadeva and Rati. Even our tears could not stop when this young man took his life.

Hearing all this, Yamraj became emotional and said, “What should I do? We had to do such an unpleasant thing for the sake of the dignity of the rule of law.”

When asked by Yamraj’s messengers about the way to avoid untimely death, Yamraj said – “By worshiping Dhanteras properly and donating lamps, untimely death does not occur. “Every house where this puja is performed remains free from the fear of untimely death.” Due to this incident, the practice of donating lamps along with Dhanvantari worship on the day of Dhanteras became popular.
