श्रीराम विष्णु के अवतार हैं, वे आदिपुरुष हैं, जो मानव मात्र की भलाई के लिए मानवीय रूप में इस धरा पर अवतरित हुए।
मानव अस्तित्व की कठिनाइयों तथा कष्टों का उन्होंने स्वयं वरण किया ताकि सामाजिक व नैतिक मूल्यों का संरक्षण किया जा सके तथा दुष्टों को दंड दिया जा सके।
रामावतार भगवान विष्णु के सर्वाधिक महत्वपूर्ण अवतारों में सर्वोपरि है।
गोस्वामी तुलसीदास के अनुसार श्रीराम नाम के दो अक्षरों में ‘रा’ तथा ‘म’ ताली की आवाज की तरह हैं, जो संदेह के पंछियों को हमसे दूर ले जाती हैं। ये हमें देवत्व शक्ति के प्रति विश्वास से ओत-प्रोत करते हैं।
इस प्रकार वेद वेदांत, जिस अनंत सच्चिदानंद तत्व में योगिवृंद रमण करते हैं उसी को परम ब्रह्म श्रीराम कहते हैं, जैसा कि राम पूर्वतापिन्युपनिषद में कहा गया है-
रमन्ते योगिनोअनन्ते नित्यानंदे चिदात्मनि।
इति रामपदेनासौ परंब्रह्मभिधीयते।।
संपूर्ण भारतीय समाज के लिए समान आदर्श के रूप में भगवान रामचन्द्र को उत्तर से लेकर दक्षिण तक सब लोगों ने स्वीकार किया है। गुरु गोविंदसिंहजी ने रामकथा लिखी है।
पूर्व की ओर कृतिवास रामायण तो महाराष्ट्र में भावार्थ रामायण चलती है। हिन्दी में तुलसीदासजी की रामायण सर्वत्र प्रसिद्ध है ही, सुदूर दक्षिण में महाकवि कम्बन द्वारा लिखित कम्ब रामायण अत्यंत भक्तिपूर्ण ग्रंथ है। स्वयं गोस्वामीजी ने रामचरितमानस में राम ग्रंथों के विस्तार का वर्णन किया है-
नाना भांति राम अवतारा।
रामायण सत कोटि अपारा।।
मनुष्य के जीवन में आने वाले सभी संबंधों को पूर्ण तथा उत्तम रूप से निभाने की शिक्षा देने वाले प्रभु श्री रामचन्द्रजी के समान दूसरा कोई चरित्र नहीं है। आदि कवि वाल्मीकि ने उनके संबंध में कहा है कि वे गाम्भीर्य में समुद्र के समान हैं।
समुद्र इव गाम्भीर्ये धैर्यण हिमवानिव।
हम राम के जीवन पर दृष्टि डालें तो उसमें कहीं भी अपूर्णता दृष्टिगोचर नहीं होती। जिस समय जैसा कार्य करना चाहिए राम ने उस समय वैसा ही किया। राम रीति, नीति, प्रीति तथा भीति सभी जानते हैं। राम परिपूर्ण हैं, आदर्श हैं। राम ने नियम, त्याग का एक आदर्श स्थापित किया है।
राम ने ईश्वर होते हुए भी मानव का रूप रचकर मानव जाति को मानवता का पाठ पढ़ाया, मानवता का उत्कृष्ट आदर्श स्थापित किया। उपनिषदों में राम नाम, ॐ अथवा अक्षर ब्रह्म हैं व इसका तात्पर्य तत्वमसि महावाक्य है-
‘र’ का अर्थ तत् (परमात्मा) है ‘म’ का अर्थ त्वम् (जीवात्मा) है तथा आ की मात्रा असि की द्योतक है। भारतीय जीवन में राम नाम उसी प्रकार अनुस्यूत है जिस प्रकार दुग्ध में धवलता।
राष्ट्र कवि मैथिलीशरण गुप्त ने ‘यशोधरा’ में राम के आदर्शमय महान जीवन के विषय में कितना सहज व सरस लिखा है-
राम! तुम्हारा चरित्र स्वयं ही काव्य है।
कोई कवि बन जाए सहज संभाव्य है।।
श्रीराम का चरित्र नरत्व के लिए तेजोमय दीप स्तंभ है। वस्तुतः भगवान राम मर्यादा के परमादर्श के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित हैं। श्रीराम सदैव कर्तव्यनिष्ठा के प्रति आस्थावान रहे हैं। उन्होंने कभी भी लोक-मर्यादा के प्रति दौर्बल्य प्रकट नहीं होने दिया। इस प्रकार मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम के रूप में श्रीराम सर्वत्र व्याप्त हैं। कहा गया है-
एक राम दशरथ का बेटा,
एक राम घट-घट में लेटा।
एक राम का सकल पसारा,
एक राम है सबसे न्यारा।।
उस उक्ति के द्वारा श्रीराम के चार रूप दर्शाए गए हैं। मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम दशरथ-नंदन, अंतर्यामी, सौपाधिक ईश्वर तथा निर्विशेष ब्रह्म। पर इन सबमें मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम श्रीराम का चरित्र सर्वाधिक पूजनीय है।

In this way, Veda Vedanta, the infinite Sachchidananda element in which Yogivrind Ramana is called, is called Param Brahma Shri Ram, as it is said in Ram Purvatapinyu Upanishad –
The yogis delight in the infinite, eternal bliss of the Self. Thus by the name of Rama he is called the Supreme Brahman.
Lord Ramchandra has been accepted by everyone from North to South as a common ideal for the entire Indian society. Guru Gobind Singhji has written Ramkatha.
Kritivas Ramayana is prevalent in the East and Bhavarth Ramayana is prevalent in Maharashtra. Not only is Tulsidasji’s Ramayana famous everywhere in Hindi, in the far south, Kamb Ramayana written by the great poet Kamban is a very devotional book. Goswamiji himself has described the expansion of Ram texts in Ramcharitmanas-
Various incarnations of Ram. Ramayana is absolutely infinite.
There is no other character like Lord Shri Ramchandraji who teaches us to maintain all the relationships that come in human life in a complete and perfect way. The great poet Valmiki has said about him that he is like the ocean in his seriousness.
Patience is like the sea in depth like the snow
If we look at the life of Ram, there is no imperfection visible anywhere in it. Ram did the right thing at the right time. Everyone knows Ram’s customs, policies, love and affection. Ram is perfect, ideal. Ram has established an ideal of rules and renunciation.
Rama, who was God, took the form of a human being and taught the lesson of humanity to mankind, establishing an excellent ideal of humanity. In the Upanishads, the name Rama, Om or the letter Akshar is Brahman and its meaning is the Tattvamasi Mahavakya-
‘R’ means Tat (God), ‘M’ means Tvam (Soul) and the vowel A signifies Asi. Ram Naam is infused in Indian life in the same way as whiteness in milk.
Rashtra Kavi Maithili Sharan Gupta has written so easily and eloquently about the ideal great life of Rama in ‘Yashodhara’:
Ram! Your character itself is poetry. It is quite possible that someone may become a poet.
The character of Shri Ram is a shining beacon for manhood. In fact, Lord Ram is revered as the ideal of decorum. Shri Ram has always been faithful to duty. He never showed any weakness towards public dignity. In this way, Shri Ram is present everywhere in the form of Maryada Purushottam. Having said-
One Ram, son of Dasharatha, A Ram lay down in a hurry. Gross spread of one Ram, There is one Ram who is the most unique.
Through that quote, four forms of Shri Ram have been shown. Maryada Purushottam Dasharatha-Nandan, Antaryami, 100-fold God and impersonal Brahma. But among all these, the character of Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram is the most revered.
