विवाह की कामना लेकर नारद जी वापस बैकुंठ गए और विष्णुजी से खुद को रूपवान बनाने की विनती की। श्रीहरि ने कहा हम वही करेंगे, जो आपके हित में होगा।’ नारद जी ने उनकी बात के मर्म को नहीं समझा और विवाह के विचार में खोए हुए बैकुंठ से लौटकर, राजकुमारी के स्वयंवर में चले गए। उन्हें लग रहा था कि अब तो वह बेहद रूपवान हो गए हैं और राजकुमारी अब उनके ही गले में वरमाला डालेगी। लेकिन राजकुमारी ने एक अन्य राजकुमार के गले में वरमाला डाल दी और नारद मुनि की तरफ देखा तक नही. नारद जी को लगा श्रीहरि ने मुझे रूपवान बनाया, फिर राजकुमारी ने मुझे देखा भी नहीं, इन विचारों के साथ उन्होंने जल में अपना चेहरा देखा तो आश्चर्यचकित रह गए। उनका चेहरा बंदर के समान था। नारद जी बहुत क्रोधित हुए और क्रोध में भरकर ही वे बैकुंठ पहुंचे। जहां श्रीहरि विष्णु के साथ उन्होंने राजकुमारी को भी देखा। इस पर उन्होंने श्रीहरि को बहुत भला-बुरा कहा और शाप दिया कि आपने बंदर का मुख देकर मेरा उपहास कराया है, मैं आपको शाप देता हूं कि आप पृथ्वी पर जन्म लेंगे और इन्हीं बंदरों की सहायता आपको लेनी होगी। आपने मुझे स्त्री वियोग दिया है,आपको भी स्त्री वियोग सहना होगा

Narad ji became very angry and he reached Baikunth only after being filled with anger. Where he saw the princess along with Sri Hari Vishnu. On this he said very good and bad to Sri Hari and cursed that you have made fun of me by giving the face of a monkey, I curse you that you will be born on earth and you will have to take the help of these monkeys. You have given me the separation of women, you will also have to bear the separation of women.
