गुरु पूर्णिमा पर कथा
टेहरी राजवंश के 15-16 वर्षीय राजकुमार के हृदय में एक प्रश्न उठा ईश्वर क्या है?
वह स्वामी रामतीर्थ के चरणों में पहुँचा और प्रणाम करके पूछाः “स्वामी जी ! ईश्वर क्या है ?”
उसकी प्रबल जिज्ञासा को देखकर रामतीर्थ जी ने कहा, “अपना परिचय लिखकर दो।”
उसने लिखा, “मैं अमुक राजा का पुत्र हूँ और अमुक मेरा नाम है।’
रामतीर्थ जी ने पत्र देखा और कहा, “अरे राजकुमार ! तुम नहीं जानते कि तुम कौन हो। तुम उस निरक्षर, अनाड़ी आदमी की तरह हो, जो राजा से मिलना चाहता है पर अपना नाम तक नहीं लिख सकता। क्या राजा उससे मिलेगा ? अतः तुम अपना नाम ठीक से बताओ, तब ईश्वर तुमसे मिलेगा।”
लड़के ने कुछ देर चिंतन करके कहा, “अब मैं समझा मैंने केवल शरीर का पता बताया। मैं मन हूँ। क्या वास्तव में ऐसा ही है?”
“अच्छा कुमार ! यदि यह बात सही है तो बताओ कि आज सवेरे तुमने जो भोजन किया था, वह तुम्हारे शरीर में कहाँ रखा है?”
“जी, मेरी बुद्धि वहाँ तक नहीं पहुँचती और मेरा मन इसकी धारणा नहीं कर सकता।”
“प्यारे राजकुमार ! तुम्हारी बातों से सिद्ध होता है कि तुम मन, बुद्धि नहीं हो। तो तुम खूब विचारो, तब मुझे बताओ कि तुम क्या हो ? उसी समय ईश्वर तुम तक आ जायेगा।”
खूब मनन कर लड़का बोला, “मेरा मन, मेरी बुद्धि वहाँ तक जाने में जवाब दे देते हैं।”
“अब तक तुम्हारी बुद्धि जहाँ तक पहुँची है, उस पर विचार करो कि ‘मैं शरीर नहीं हूँ, मैं मन नहीं हूँ, मैं बुद्धि नहीं हूँ।’ यदि ऐसा है तो इसकी अनुभूति करो। अमल में लाओ। यदि तुम सत्य का केवल इतना अंश भी व्यवहार में लाना सीख जाते हो तो तुम्हारी समस्त शोक-चिंताएँ समाप्त हो जायेंगी।” बालक को यह जताने में रामतीर्थ जी द्वारा कुछ उपदेश दिया गया कि वह स्वयं क्या है।
🔷 इसके बाद रामतीर्थ जी द्वारा दिन भर में किये गये कार्यों का विवरण पूछने पर राजकुमार ने अपने जागने, स्नान व भोजन करने, पढ़ने एवं चिट्ठियाँ लिखने आदि का ब्यौरा बताया। रामतीर्थ जी- “राजकुमार! इन छोटे-छोटे कामों के अतिरिक्त तुमने अगणित कार्य किये हैं।” राजकुमार किंकर्तव्यविमूढ़ होकर उनकी बात पर मनन करने लगा।
रामतीर्थ जीः “तुम भोजन करते हो, उसे आमाशय में पहुँचाते हो, उसका रस बनाते हो, रक्त, मांस, मज्जा बनाते हो, हृदयगति चलाते हो, शरीर की शिरा-शिरा में रक्त का संचार करते हो। तुम्हीं बाल उगाते हो, शरीर के प्रत्येक अंग को पुष्ट करते हो। अब ध्यान दो कि कितने कार्य, कितनी क्रियाएँ तुम प्रत्येक क्षण करते रहते हो।”
लड़का बारम्बार सोचने लगा और बोलाः “महाराज जी! वस्तुतः इस शरीर में हजारों क्रियाएँ एक साथ हो रही हैं, जिन्हें बुद्धि नहीं जानती, मन जिनसे बेखबर है और फिर भी वे सब क्रियाएँ हो रही हैं। इन सबका कारण अवश्य मैं ही हो सकता हूँ। इन सबका कर्ता मैं ही हूँ। अतः मेरा यह कथन सर्वथा गलत था कि मैंने कुछ ही काम किये हैं।”
🔷 रामतीर्थ जी ने शरीर में इच्छा और अनिच्छा से होने वाले कार्यों के बारे में समझाते हुए कहाः “लोग यह भयंकर भूल करते हैं कि केवल उन्हीं कार्यों को अपने किये हुए मानते हैं जो मन अथवा बुद्धि के माध्यम से होते हैं और उन सब कार्यों को अस्वीकार कर देते हैं जो मन अथवा बुद्धि के माध्यम के बिना सीधे-सीधे हो रहे हैं। इस भूल तथा लापरवाही से ही वे अपने शुद्ध स्वरूप को मन के बंदीगृह में बंदी बना लेते हैं। इस प्रकार वे असीम को ससीम और परिच्छिन्न (सीमित) बनाकर दुःख भोगते हैं। ईश्वर तुम्हारे भीतर हैं और वह ईश्वर तुम स्वयं हो।
तुम जाग्रत, स्वप्न, सुषुप्ति तीनों अवस्थाओं का साक्षी हो। तुम सर्वत्र विराजमान हो। तुम्हारी शक्ति सर्वव्यापिनी है। वही सितारों को चमका रही है, वही तुम्हारी आँखों में देखने की शक्ति दे रही है, वही नदियों को प्रवाहित कर रही है, वही ब्रह्माण्डों को क्षण-प्रतिक्षण बना-बिगाड़ रही है। क्या तुम वह शक्ति नहीं हो ? सचमुच तुम वही शक्ति हो, वही चैतन्य हो जो मन बुद्धि से परे है, जो सम्पूर्ण विश्व का शासन कर रहा है। वही आत्मदेव तुम हो, वही अज्ञेय, वही तेज, तत्त्व, शक्ति, जो जी चाहे कह लो, वही सर्वरूप जो सर्वत्र विद्यमान है, वही तुम हो।” इस प्रकार स्वामी रामतीर्थ ने बालक को आत्मानुभव की झलक चखा दी और वह उनके मार्गदर्शन अनुसार आत्मानुसंधान कर आत्मस्वरूप में स्थित हुआ, ज्ञातज्ञेय हो गया।
🔷 राजकुमारः “मैंने सवाल किया था कि ईश्वर क्या है? और मुझे पता चल गया कि मेरा अपना आपा ही ईश्वर है। मुझे अपने को ही जानना था। मेरे जानने से ईश्वर का पता लग गया।”
🔶 ‘ईश्वर क्या है?’, ‘मैं कौन हूँ ?’ – ये प्रश्न बहुत सरल लगते हैं लेकिन इनका जवाब पाने की जिज्ञासा जिनके हृदय में जागती है, उनके माता-पिता धन्य हैं, कुल गोत्र धन्य हैं। धन्या माता पिता धन्यो…. ऐसे लोग बहुत कम होते हैं। जिन्हें इसका जवाब पाये बिना चैन नहीं आता, ऐसे तो कोई-कोई विरले होते हैं और ऐसे सच्चे जिज्ञासु को ईश्वर-तत्त्व का अनुभव किये हुए किन्हीं महापुरुष की शरण मिल जाये तो फिर इस खोज को पूर्ण होने में बहुत देर नहीं लगती।
भगवान श्रीराम जी के गुरुदेव वसिष्ठजी महाराज कहते हैं, “हे राम जी! ज्ञान समझना मात्र है, कुछ यत्न नहीं। संतों के पास जाकर प्रश्न करना कि ‘मैं कौन हूँ? जगत क्या है? जीव क्या है? परमात्मा क्या है? संसार-बंधन क्या है? और इससे तरकर कैसे परम पद को प्राप्त होऊँ?’ फिर ज्ञानवान जो उपदेश करें, उसके अभ्यास से आत्मपद को प्राप्त होगा, अन्यथा न होगा।”
में भी यही युक्ति बताते हुए कहते हैं, “तुम अपने-आपसे पूछो- “मैं कौन हूँ?’ खाओ, पियो, चलो, घूमो, फिर पूछोः ‘मैं कौन हूँ?’
‘मैं विक्रम हूँ, मैं मनीषा हूँ, मै मंदीप हूँ, मै सुदर्शन हूँ ।’
यह तो तुम्हारी देह का नाम है। तुम कौन हो ? अपने को पूछा करो। जितनी गहराई से पूछोगे, उतना दिव्य अनुभव होने लगेगा। एकांत में शांत वातावरण में बैठकर ऐसा पूछो…. ऐसा पूछो कि बस, पूछना ही हो जाओ। पूछो की में पिछले जनम में भी था तो फिर जिसको जलाया गया, दफनाया गया, पानी में डुबाया गया वो कोन था, वो शरीर था, तुम कौन हो???
🔷 लगे रहो। खूब अभ्यास करोगे तब ‘मैं कौन हूँ? ईश्वर क्या है?’ यह प्रकट होने लगेगा और मन की चंचलता मिटने लगेगी, बुद्धि के विकार नष्ट होने लगेंगे तथा शरीर के व्यर्थ के विकार शांत होने लगेंगे। यदि ईमानदारी से साधना करने लगो न, तो छः महीने में वहाँ पहुँच जाओगे जहाँ छः साल से चला हुआ व्यक्ति भी नहीं पहुँच पाता है। तत्त्वज्ञान हवाई जहाज की यात्रा है।”
महापुरुषों के सत्संग का जीवन में जितना आदर होता है, जितनी ‘ईश्वर क्या है ? मैं कौन हूँ ?’ यह जानने की जिज्ञासा तीव्र होती है, उतनी महापुरुषों की कृपा शीघ्र पचती है और जीव चौरासी लाख योनियों की भटकने से बचकर अपने ईश्वरत्व का, अपने ब्रह्मत्व का साक्षात्कार कर लेता है।

A question arose in the heart of a 15-16 year old prince of the Tehri dynasty, what is God?
He reached at the feet of Swami Ramatirtha and bowed down and asked: “Swami ji! What is God?”
Seeing his intense curiosity, Ramteerth ji said, “Write down your introduction.”
He wrote, “I am the son of such and such a king and such and such is my name.”
Ramatirtha saw the letter and said, “O prince! You do not know who you are. You are like that illiterate, clumsy man who wants to meet the king but cannot even write his name. Will the king meet him? So You tell your name properly, then God will meet you.
The boy pondered for a while and said, “Now I understand that I only told the address of the body. I am the mind. Is it really so?”
“Good Kumar! If this is true, then tell me where is the food you had this morning kept in your body?”
“Yes, my intellect does not reach there and my mind cannot perceive it.”
“Dear prince! Your words prove that you are mind, not intellect. So think a lot, then tell me what you are? At that time God will come to you.”
After thinking a lot, the boy said, “My mind and my intellect give the answer in going there.”
“Think about the extent to which your intellect has reached so far that ‘I am not the body, I am not the mind, I am not the intellect.’ If so, then feel it. Put it into practice. If you learn to put into practice even this little bit of truth, all your sorrows and worries will vanish.” In order to show the child what he himself is, some teachings were given by Ramtirtha.
🔷 After this, on asking the details of the works done by Ramteerth ji throughout the day, the prince told the details of his waking up, bathing and eating, reading and writing letters etc. Ramteerth ji- “Prince! Apart from these small tasks, you have done countless tasks.” The prince became perplexed by his duty and started meditating on his words.
Ramteerth ji: “You eat food, take it to the stomach, make juice out of it, make blood, flesh, marrow, make the heart beat, circulate blood in every vein of the body. You make hair grow, Strengthens each and every organ. Now notice how many actions, how many actions you keep doing every moment.
The boy started thinking again and again and said: “Maharaj ji! In fact thousands of activities are happening simultaneously in this body, which the intellect does not know, the mind is unaware of and yet all those activities are happening. I must be the reason for all these. I am the doer of all this. So my statement that I have done only a few things was completely wrong.”
🔷 Ramteerth ji, while explaining about the actions done by desire and unwillingness in the body, said: “People make this terrible mistake that they consider only those actions that are done through the mind or intellect and all those actions reject what is happening directly without the medium of mind or intellect. It is by this mistake and carelessness that they imprison their pure nature in the prison of mind. Thus they make the infinite limited and circumscribed. God is within you and that God is you yourself.
You are the witness of all the three states of waking, dream and deep sleep. You are present everywhere. Your power is all pervading. She is making the stars shine, She is giving the power to see in your eyes, She is making the rivers flow, She is creating and destroying the universes every moment. Aren’t you that power? Truly you are the same power, the same consciousness which is beyond the mind and intellect, which is ruling the entire universe. You are the same Atmandev, the same unknowable, the same brightness, element, power, whatever you want to call it, the same form that is present everywhere, you are.” Thus Swami Ramatirtha gave the child a glimpse of self-realization and he followed his guidance. By doing self-research, he became situated in the self-form, became known.
🔷 Prince: “I had asked the question what is God? And I came to know that my own self is God. I had to know myself. By knowing myself I came to know God.”
🔶 ‘What is God?’, ‘Who am I?’ – These questions seem very simple, but whose heart awakens the curiosity to get answers to them, their parents are blessed, the clan is blessed. Thank you parents, thank you. Such people are very few. Those who do not get peace without getting the answer to this question, such people are rare, and if such a true seeker gets the shelter of some great man who has experienced the God-principle, then it does not take much time to complete this search.
Lord Shri Ram’s Gurudev Vasishthaji Maharaj says, “O Ram ji! Knowledge is just understanding, not any effort. Go to the saints and ask ‘Who am I? What is the world? What is the soul? What is the God? The world- What is bondage? And how can I overcome it and attain the supreme position?’ Then by the practice of the teachings given by the wise, one will attain the state of self, otherwise it will not happen.
I also tell the same trick and say, “Ask yourself – ‘Who am I?’ Eat, drink, walk, move around, then ask: ‘Who am I?’
‘I am Vikram, I am Manisha, I am Mandeep, I am Sudarshan.’
This is the name of your body. Who are you ? Ask yourself The more deeply you ask, the more divine you will experience. Ask like this while sitting alone in a calm environment. Ask in such a way that just asking becomes done. Ask if I was in the previous birth too, then who was the one who was burnt, buried, immersed in water, who was that body, who are you???
🔷 keep on If you practice a lot then ‘Who am I? What is God?’ This will begin to appear and the restlessness of the mind will begin to disappear, the disorders of the intellect will begin to be destroyed and the wasteful disorders of the body will begin to calm down. If you start doing sadhna sincerely, then in six months you will reach where even a person who has been gone for six years cannot reach. Philosophy is a journey in an aeroplane.”
Satsang of great men is respected as much as ‘What is God? Who am I ?’ The more intense the curiosity to know this, the sooner the grace of the great men is digested and the soul, avoiding the wanderings of eighty-four lakh births, realizes its divinity, its Brahman.
