प्रतिवर्ष ज्येष्ठ माह की शुक्ल पक्ष की
दशमी को गंगा दशहरा आता है|
स्कंदपुराण के अनुसार गंगा दशहरे के दिन व्यक्ति को किसी भी पवित्र नदी पर जाकर स्नान,ध्यान तथा दान करना चाहिए| इससे वह अपने सभी पापों से मुक्ति पाता है| यदि कोई मनुष्य पवित्र नदी तक नहीं जा पाता तब वह अपने घर पास की किसी नदी पर स्नान करें| ज्येष्ठ शुक्ल पक्ष की दशमी को संवत्सर का मुख कहा गया है| इसलिए इस इस दिन दान और स्नान का ही अत्यधिक महत्व है|
वराह पुराण के अनुसार ज्येष्ठ शुक्ल दशमी, बुधवार के दिन, हस्त नक्षत्र में गंगा स्वर्ग से धरती पर आई थी|
मोक्षदायिनी माँ गंगा सबों का कल्याण करें।
मां गंगा का मंत्र – ॐ नमो गंगायै विश्वरूपिण्यै नारायण्यै नमो नमः’ मंत्र का जाप करें.

गंगा दशहरा देवी गंगा को समर्पित है और यह दिन उस दिन के रूप में मनाया जाता है जब गंगा को भागीरथ के पूर्वजों की शापित आत्माओं को शुद्ध करने के लिए अपने मिशन को पूरा करने के लिए पृथ्वी पर उतारा गया था.
इस पवित्र नदी में स्नान करने से दस प्रकार के पाप नष्ट होते है| किसी भी नदी पर जाकर अर्ध्य (पूजादिक) एवम् तिलोदक (तीर्थ प्राप्ति निमित्तक तर्पण) अवश्य करें। ऐसा करने वाला महापातकों के बराबर के दस पापों से छूट जाता है। ज्येष्ठ शुक्ल पक्ष, दशमी को गंगावतरण का दिन मन्दिरों एवं सरोवरों में स्नान कर पवित्रता के साथ मनाया जाता है। इस दिन मथुरा में पतंगबाज़ी का विशेष आयोजन होता है।
गंगा दशहरे का महत्व
इस दिन गंगा नदी में खड़े होकर जो गंगा स्तोत्र पढ़ता है, वह अपने सभी पापों से मुक्ति पाता है|स्कंद पुराण में दशहरा नाम का गंगा स्तोत्र दिया हुआ है| गंगा दशहरे के दिन श्रद्धालु जन जिस भी वस्तु का दान करें उनकी संख्या दस होनी चाहिए और जिस वस्तु से भी पूजन करें उनकी संख्या भी दस ही होनी चाहिए| ऎसा करने से शुभ फलों में और अधिक वृद्धि होती है|
गंगा दशहरे का फल ज्येष्ठ शुक्ल दशमी के दिन गंगा स्नान करने से व्यक्ति के दस प्रकार के पापों का नाश होता है| इन दस पापों में तीन पाप कायिक, चार पाप वाचिक और तीन पाप मानसिक होते हैं| इन सभी से व्यक्ति को मुक्ति मिलती है|
गंगा दशहरा हिन्दुओं का एक प्रमुख त्योहार है. ज्येष्ठ शुक्ला दशमी को दशहरा कहते हैं. इसमें स्नान, दान, रूपात्मक व्रत होता है. इस दिन दान का भी अति विशेष महत्व है. धार्मिक मान्यता है कि गंगा नाम के स्मरण मात्र से व्यक्ति के पाप मिट जाते हैं.
गंगा आरती:

जो नर तुमको ध्याता, मनवांछित फल पाता,

चंद्र सी ज्योति तुम्हारी, जल निर्मल आता।
शरण पड़े जो तेरी, सो नर तर जाता।
ॐ जय गंगे माता, मैया जय गंगे माता।
पुत्र सगर के तारे, सब जग को ज्ञाता।
कृपा दृष्टि हो तुम्हारी, त्रिभुवन सुख दाता।
ॐ जय गंगे माता, मैया जय गंगे माता।
एक बार जो प्राणी, शरण तेरी आता।
यम की त्रास मिटाकर, परमगति पाता।
ॐ जय गंगे माता, मैया जय गंगे माता।
आरति मातु तुम्हारी, जो नर नित गाता।
सेवक वही सहज में, मुक्ति को पाता।
ॐ जय गंगे माता, मैया जय गंगे माता।

Every year on Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month Ganga Dussehra comes on the tenth day.
According to Skanda Purana, on the day of Ganga Dussehra, a person should go to any holy river and bathe, meditate and donate. By this he gets freedom from all his sins. If a person is not able to go to the holy river, then he should take a bath in a river near his house. Dashami of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha is said to be the face of Samvatsara. Therefore, donation and bathing are of utmost importance on this day.
According to Varaha Purana, on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami, on Wednesday, Ganga came to earth from heaven in Hasta Nakshatra.

Ganga Dussehra is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and this day is celebrated as the day when Ganga descended to earth to fulfill her mission to purify the cursed souls of the ancestors of Bhagirath.
Ten types of sins are destroyed by bathing in this holy river. Going to any river must do Ardhya (worship) and Tilodak (Tirpan for the attainment of pilgrimage). One who does this gets rid of ten sins equal to that of Mahapatakas. Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha, Dashami, the day of Gangavataran is celebrated with purity by bathing in temples and lakes. On this day, a special event of kite flying is organized in Mathura.
Significance of Ganga Dussehra On this day, one who recites Ganga Stotra standing in the Ganges river, he gets freedom from all his sins. The Ganges Stotra named Dussehra is given in Skanda Purana. On the day of Ganga Dussehra, the number of things that the devotees donate should be ten, and the number of things with which they worship should also be ten. By doing this there is more increase in auspicious results.
Fruits of Ganga Dussehra: By taking bath in the Ganges on the day of Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami, ten types of sins of a person are destroyed. Of these ten sins, three sins are physical, four sins are verbal and three sins are mental. One gets liberation from all these.
Ganga Dussehra is a major festival of Hindus. Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami is called Dussehra. There is a bath, charity, ritual fasting in this. Donation also has a very special significance on this day. It is a religious belief that the mere remembrance of the name Ganga washes away the sins of a person.

The one who takes refuge in you, then the man would get wet. Jai Gange Mata, Maya Jai Gange Mata. Son of Sagara, the knower of all the worlds. Have mercy on you, the giver of Tribhuvan happiness.
