श्री शुकदेव जी कहते हैं- परीक्षित! अब समस्त शुभ गुणों से युक्त बहुत सुहावना समय आया। रोहिणी नक्षत्र था। आकाश के सभी नक्षत्र, ग्रह और तारे शान्त-सौम्य हो रहे थे , दिशाऐं स्वच्छ, प्रसन्न थीं। निर्मल आकाश में तारे जगमगा रहे थे। पृथ्वी के बड़े-बड़े नगर, छोटे-छोटे गाँव, अहीरों की बस्तियाँ और हीरे आदि की खानें मंगलमय हो रहीं थीं। नदियों का जल निर्मल हो गया था। रात्रि के समय भी सरोवरों में कमल खिल रहे थे। वन में वृक्षों की पत्तियाँ रंग-बिरंगे पुष्पों के गुच्छों से लद गयीं थीं। कहीं पक्षी चहक रहे थे, तो कहीं भौंरे गुनगुना रहे थे। उस समय परम पवित्र और शीतल-मंद-सुगन्ध वायु अपने स्पर्श से लोगों को सुखदान करती हुई बह रही थी। ब्राह्मणों के अग्निहोत्र की कभी न बुझने वाली अग्नियाँ जो कंस के अत्याचार से बुझ गयीं थीं, वे इस समय अपने-आप जल उठीं। संत पुरुष पहले से ही चाहते थे कि असुरों की बढ़ती न होने पाये। अब उनका मन सहसा प्रसन्नता से भर गया। जिस समय भगवान के आविर्भाव का अवसर आया, स्वर्ग में देवताओं की दुन्दुभियाँ अपने-आप बज उठीं। किन्नर और गन्धर्व मधुर स्वर में गाने लगे तथा सिद्ध और चारण भगवान के मंगलमय गुणों की स्तुति करने लगे। विद्याधरियाँ अप्सराओं के साथ नाचने लगीं। बड़े-बड़े देवता और ऋषि-मुनि आनन्द से भरकर पुष्पों को वर्षा करने लगे , जल से भरे हुए बादल समुद्र के पास जाकर धीरे-धीरे गर्जना करने लगे।
जन्म-मृत्यु के चक्र से छुड़ाने वाले जनार्दन के अवतार का समय था निशीथ। चारों ओर अन्धकार का साम्राज्य था। उसी समय सबके हृदय में विराजमान भगवान विष्णु देवरूपिणी देवकी के गर्भ से प्रकट हुए, जैसे पूर्व दिशा में सोलहों कलाओं से पूर्ण चन्द्रमा का उदय हो गया हो। वसुदेव जी ने देखा, उनके सामने एक अद्भुत बालक है। उसके नेत्र कमल के समान कोमल और विशाल हैं। चार सुन्दर हाथों में शंख, गदा, चक्र और कमल लिये हुए है। वक्षःस्थल पर श्रीवत्स का चिह्न – अत्यन्त सुन्दर सुवर्णमयी रेखा है। गले में कौस्तुभमणि झिलमिला रही है। वर्षाकालीन मेघ के समान परम सुन्दर श्यामल शरीर पर मनोहर पीताम्बर फहरा रहा है। बहुमूल्य वैदूर्यमणि के किरीट और कुण्डल की कान्ति से सुन्दर-सुन्दर घुँघराले बाल सूर्य की किरणों के सामान चमक रहे हैं। कमर में चमचमाती करधनी की लड़ियाँ लटक रहीं हैं। बाँहों में बाजूबंद और कलाईयों में कंकण शोभायमान हो रहे हैं। इन सब आभूषणों से सुशोभित बालक के अंग-अंग से अनोखी छटा छिटक रही है।
जब वसुदेव जी ने देखा कि मेरे पुत्र के रूप में स्वयं भगवान ही आये हैं, तब पहले तो उन्हें असीम आश्चर्य हुआ; फिर आनन्द से उनकी आँखें खिल उठी। उनका रोम-रोम परमानन्द में मग्न हो गया। परीक्षित! भगवान श्रीकृष्ण अपनी अंगकांति से सूतिका गृह को जगमग कर रहे थे। जब वसुदेव जी को यह निश्चय हो गया कि ये तो परम पुरुष परमात्मा ही हैं, तब भगवान का प्रभाव जान लेने से उनका सारा भय जाता रहा। अपनी बुद्धि स्थिर करके उन्होंने भगवान के चरणों में अपना सर झुका दिया और फिर हाथ जोड़कर वे उनकी स्तुति करने लगे।
वसुदेव जी ने कहा- मैं समझ गया कि आप प्रकृति से अतीत साक्षात पुरुषोत्तम हैं। आपका स्वरूप है- केवल अनुभव और केवल आनन्द। आप समस्त बुद्धियों के एकमात्र साक्षी हैं। आप ही सर्ग के आदि में अपनी प्रकृति से इस त्रिगुणमय जगत की सृष्टि करते हैं। फिर उसमें प्रविष्ट न होने पर भी आप प्रविष्ट के समान जान पड़ते हैं। जैसे जब तक महत्त्व आदि कारण-तत्त्व पृथक-पृथक रहते हैं तब तक उनकी शक्ति भी पृथक होती है; जब वे इन्द्रियादि सोलह विकारों के साथ मिलते हैं, तभी इस ब्रह्माण्ड की रचना करते हैं
आप सर्वशक्तिमान और परम कल्याण के आश्रय हैं। मैं आपकी शरण लेती हूँ।
प्रभो! आप हैं भक्त्तभयहारी। और हम लोग इस दुष्ट कंस से बहुत ही भयभीत हैं। अतः आप हमारी रक्षा कीजिये। आपका यह चतुर्भुज दिव्यरूप ध्यान की वस्तु है। विश्वात्मन! आपका यह रूप अलौकिक है। आप शंख, चक्र, गदा और कमल की शोभा से युक्त अपना यह चतुर्भुज रूप छिपा लीजिये। प्रलय के समय आप इस सम्पूर्ण विश्व को अपने शरीर में वैसे ही स्वाभाविक रूप से धारण करते हैं, जैसे कोई मनुष्य अपने शरीर में रहने वाले छिद्ररूप आकाश को। वही परम पुरुष परमात्मा आप मेरे गर्भवासी हुए, यह आपकी अद्भुत मनुष्य-लीला नहीं तो और क्या?
तुम दोनों के हृदय बड़े शुद्ध थे। जब ब्रह्मा जी ने तुम दोनों को संतान उत्पन्न करने की आज्ञा दी, तब तुम लोगों ने इन्द्रियों का दमन करके उत्कृष्ट तपस्या की। तुम दोनों ने वर्षा, वायु, घाम, शीत, उष्ण आदि काल के विभिन्न गुणों को सहन किया और प्राणायाम के द्वारा अपने मन के मैल धो डाले। तुम दोनों कभी सूखे पत्ते खा लेते और कभी हवा पीकर ही रह जाते। तुम्हारा चित्त बड़ा शांत था। इस प्रकार तुम लोगों ने मुझ से अभीष्ट वस्तु प्राप्त करने की इच्छा से मेरी आराधना की। मुझ में चित्त लगाकर ऐसा परम दुष्कर और घोर तप करते-करते देवताओं के बारह हज़ार वर्ष बीत गये। ‘पुण्यमयी देवि! उस समय मैं तुम दोनों पर प्रसन्न हुआ। क्योंकि तुम दोनों ने तपस्या, श्रद्धा और प्रेममयी भक्ति से अपने हृदय में नित्य-निरन्तर मेरी भावना की थी। उस समय तुम दोनों की अभिलाषा पूर्ण करने के लिए वर देने वालों का राजा मैं इसी रूप से तुम्हारे सामने प्रकट हुआ। जब मैंने कहा कि ‘तुम्हारी जो इच्छा हो, मुझसे माँग लो’, तब तुम दोनों ने मेरे जैसा पुत्र माँगा। इसलिए मेरी माया से मोहित होकर तुम दोनों ने मुझ से मोक्ष नहीं माँगा। तुम्हें मेरे जैसा पुत्र होने का वर प्राप्त हो गया और मैं वहाँ से चला गया।
। सती देवकी! तुम्हारे इस तीसरे जन्म में भी मैं उसी रूप से फिर तुम्हारा पुत्र हुआ हूँ । मेरी वाणी सर्वदा सत्य होती है।
मैंने तुम्हें अपना यह रूप इसलिये दिखला दिया है कि तुम्हें मेरे पूर्व अवतारों का स्मरण हो जाय। यदि मैं ऐसा नहीं करता, तो केवल मनुष्य-शरीर से मेरे अवतार की पहचान नहीं हो पाती। तुम दोनों मेरे प्रति पुत्रभाव तथा निरन्तर ब्रह्मभाव रखना। इस प्रकार वात्सल्य-स्नेह और चिन्तन के द्वारा तुम्हें मेरे परम पद की प्राप्ति होगी।’
श्री शुकदेव जी कहते हैं- भगवान इतना कहकर चुप हो गये। अब उन्होंने अपनी योगमाया से पिता-माता के देखते-देखते तुरंत एक साधारण शिशु का रूप धारण कर लिया। तब वसुदेव जी ने भगवान की प्रेरणा से अपने पुत्र को लेकर सूतिका गृह से बाहर निकलने की इच्छा की। उसी समय नन्दपत्नी यशोदा के गर्भ से उस योगमाया का जन्म हुआ,
बंदीगृह के सभी दरवाजे बंद थे। उनमें बड़े-बड़े किवाड़, लोहे की जंजीरें और ताले जड़े हुए थे। उनके बाहर जाना बड़ा ही कठिन था; परन्तु वसुदेव जी भगवान श्रीकृष्ण को गोद में लेकर ज्यों ही उनके निकट पहुँचे, त्यों ही वे सब दरवाजे आप-से-आप खुल गए। ठीक वैसे ही, जैसे सूर्योदय होते ही अन्धकार दूर हो जाता है। उस समय बादल धीरे-धीरे गरज कर जल की फुहारें छोड़ रहे थे। इसलिए शेषजी अपने फनों से जल को रोकते हुए भगवान के पीछे-पीछे चलने लगे । उन दिनों बार-बार वर्षा होती रहती थी, इस से यमुना जी बहुत बढ़ गयी थीं । उनका प्रवाह गहरा और तेज हो गया था। तरल तरंगों के कारण जल पर फेन-ही-फेन हो रहा था। सैकड़ों भयानक भँवर पड़ रहे थे। जैसे सीतापति भगवान श्रीराम जी को समुद्र ने मार्ग दे दिया था, वैसे ही यमुना जी ने भगवान को मार्ग दे दिया। वसुदेव जी ने नन्दबाबा के गोकुल में जाकर देखा कि सब-के-सब गोप नींद में अचेत पड़े हुए हैं। उन्होंने अपने पुत्र को यशोदा जी की शैय्या पर सुला दिया और उनकी नवजात कन्या लेकर वे बंदीगृह में लौट आये। जेल में पहुँचकर वसुदेव जी ने उस कन्या को देवकी की शैय्या पर सुला दिया और अपने पैरों में बेड़ियाँ डाल लीं तथा पहले की तरह वे बंदीगृह में बंद हो गये।
उधर नन्दपत्नी यशोदा जी को इतना तो मालूम हुआ कि कोई सन्तान हुई है, परन्तु वे यह न जान सकीं कि पुत्र है या पुत्री। क्योंकि एक तो उन्हें बड़ा परिश्रम हुआ था और दूसरे योगमाया ने उन्हें अचेत कर दिया था ।
Shri Shukdev ji says – Parikshit! Now a very pleasant time has come with all the auspicious qualities. Rohini was the constellation. All the constellations, planets and stars in the sky were becoming peaceful, the directions were clean and happy. The stars were shining in the clear sky. The big cities of the earth, small villages, settlements of Ahirs and mines of diamonds etc. were becoming auspicious. The water of the rivers had become pure. Lotus was blooming in the lakes even during the night. The leaves of the trees in the forest were covered with bunches of colorful flowers. Somewhere the birds were chirping, and somewhere the bumblebees were humming. At that time the most pure and cool-smelling air was blowing pleasing the people with its touch. The inexhaustible fires of the brahmins’ Agnihotra, which had been extinguished by the tyranny of Kansa, spontaneously lit up at this time. The saintly men already wanted that the Asuras should not grow. Now his heart was filled with happiness. When the time for the appearance of the Lord came, the hymns of the deities automatically rang in the heavens. Kinnars and Gandharvas started singing in melodious voices and Siddha and Barana started praising the auspicious qualities of God. Vidyadharis started dancing with Apsaras. The great gods and sages filled with joy started showering the flowers, the clouds filled with water approached the sea and started roaring slowly.
Nishith was the time of the incarnation of Janardana, who was liberated from the cycle of birth and death. There was a kingdom of darkness all around. At the same time, Lord Vishnu, seated in everyone’s heart, appeared from the womb of Devaki, as if a full moon had emerged in the east with sixteen arts. Vasudev ji saw a wonderful child in front of him. His eyes are soft and huge like a lotus. In four beautiful hands are holding conch shell, mace, chakra and lotus. The mark of Shrivatsa on the chest is a very beautiful golden line. Kaustubhamani is twinkling in her neck. Like a rainy cloud, the most beautiful Shyamal body is fluttering with a lovely yellow peacock. Beautiful curly hair are shining like the rays of the sun from the kirit of the precious Vaiduryamani and the radiance of the coil. Strings of gleaming girdles are hanging in the waist. The armpits in the arms and the kankan in the wrists are becoming beautiful. The child adorned with all these ornaments is flaunting a unique shade from every part of the body.
When Vasudev ji saw that God himself had come in the form of my son, at first he was astonished; Then his eyes lit up with joy. His romance became engrossed in ecstasy. Tested! Lord Shri Krishna was lighting the Sutika Griha with his Angkanti. When Vasudev ji was convinced that he was the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then after knowing the effect of God, all his fear went away. Stabilizing his intellect, he bowed his head at the feet of the Lord and then with folded hands he started praising him.
Vasudev ji said – I have understood that you are the supreme person in the past from nature. Your nature is only experience and only joy. You are the only witness of all intellects. You create this three-gunned world by your nature at the beginning of the canto. Then even if you do not enter into it, you look like an entry. As long as the causal factors like importance etc. remain separate, their power is also separate; When they meet with the sixteen vices of the sense organs, then they create this universe.
You are the almighty and the abode of ultimate welfare. I take refuge in you.
Lord! You are a devotee. And we are very afraid of this evil Kansa. So you protect us. Your quadrilateral divine form is the object of meditation. Universe! Your form is supernatural. You hide this quadrilateral form of yours with the beauty of conch shell, chakra, mace and lotus. At the time of catastrophe, you hold this whole world in your body as naturally as a human being holds the space in the form of a hole in his body. The same Supreme Supreme Personality of Godhead, you became my pregnancy, if this is not your wonderful human pastime, then what else?
You both had very pure hearts. When Brahma ji ordered both of you to have children, then you performed excellent penance by suppressing the senses. You both endured the various qualities of rain, wind, heat, cold, heat etc. and washed away the filth of your mind through Pranayama. Sometimes both of you would eat dry leaves and sometimes you would be left drinking the air. Your mind was very calm. In this way you worshiped me out of the desire to get the desired thing from me. Twelve thousand years of deities have passed by doing such extremely difficult and severe austerities with their minds in me. ‘Blessed Goddess! At that time I was pleased with both of you. Because both of you had constantly felt Me in your heart with penance, reverence and loving devotion. At that time, to fulfill the desire of both of you, the king of those who gave boons appeared before you in this form. When I said ‘Ask me whatever you want’, then both of you asked for a son like me. That’s why both of you, being fascinated by my Maya, did not ask for salvation from me. You got the boon of having a son like me and I left from there.
, Sati Devaki! In this third birth of yours also I have become your son again in the same form. My words are always true.
I have shown you this form so that you may remember my former incarnations. If I did not do this, then my incarnation would not be recognized by the human body alone. Keep both of you son-in-law and constant Brahmabhava towards Me. In this way, through Vatsalya-affection and contemplation, you will attain my supreme position.’
Shri Shukdev ji says – God became silent after saying this. Now he immediately took the form of an ordinary child with the help of his Yogamaya. Then Vasudev ji, with the inspiration of God, wanted to take his son out of Sutika Griha. At the same time that Yogmaya was born from the womb of Nanda’s wife Yashoda.
All the doors of the prison were closed. Big doors, iron chains and locks were embedded in them. It was very difficult for them to go out; But as soon as Vasudev ji reached near Lord Krishna with his lap, all those doors opened on his own. Just like, as soon as the sun rises, the darkness goes away. At that time the clouds were slowly roaring and leaving splashes of water. So Sheshji, stopping the water from his hood, started following the Lord. In those days it was raining again and again, due to this Yamuna ji had increased a lot. His flow had become deeper and faster. The water was frothing because of the liquid waves. Hundreds of terrible whirlpools were falling. Just as Sitapati Lord Shri Ram ji was given way by the sea, in the same way Yamuna ji gave way to God. Vasudev ji went to Nand Baba’s Gokul and saw that all the cows were lying unconscious in their sleep. He put his son to sleep on Yashoda ji’s bed and returned to the prison with his newborn daughter. Upon reaching the jail, Vasudev ji put that girl to sleep on Devaki’s bed and put shackles on her feet and as before, they were locked in the prison.
On the other hand, Nanda’s wife Yashoda ji came to know that there was a child, but she could not know whether it was a son or a daughter. Because on the one hand he had worked very hard and on the other, Yogamaya had made him unconscious.
