मथुरा शहर से करीब 20 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर एक पहाड़ी स्थित है। इस पहाड़ी को गोवर्धन व गिरिराज नाम से जाना जाता है। मान्यता है कि इसी पर्वत को अपनी कनिष्ठा अंगुली पर भगवान कृष्ण ने उठाकर ब्रजवासियों को इंद्र के प्रकोप से बचाया था। तब से इस पर्वत की महत्ता काफी बढ़ गई। आज दूर दूर से भक्त यहां आकर गोवर्धन पर्वत की परिक्रमा लगाया करते हैं।
जानते हैं गिरिराज जी से जुड़े महत्वपूर्ण तथ्य
1. कहा जाता है कि गोवर्धन पर्वत शापित है। पुलस्त्य ऋषि ने इसे शाप दिया था कि एक दिन ये पृथ्वी से समाप्त हो जाएगा। उनके शाप के कारण इसका आकार हर दिन मुट्ठीभर घट जाता है। करीब पांच हजार साल पहले ये पर्वत 30 हजार मीटर ऊंचा हुआ करता था लेकिन आज लगभग 30 मीटर का ही रह गया है। मान्यता है कि जब ये पर्वत पूरी तरह पृथ्वी में समा जाएगा, तब कलियुग का अंत हो जाएगा।
2. पर्वत का आकार घटने को लेकर एक कहानी प्रचलित है। कहा जाता है कि एक बार पुलस्त्य ऋषि गोवर्धन पर्वत की खूबसूरती से बहुत प्रभावित हुए। उन्होंने द्रोणांचल पर्वत से इसे उठाकर साथ लाना चाहा तो गिरिराज जी ने कहा कि आप मुझे जहां भी पहली बार रखेंगे मैं वहीं स्थापित हो जाउंगा। रास्ते में साधना के लिए ऋषि ने पर्वत को नीचे रख दिया फिर वे दोबारा उसे हिला नहीं सके। इससे क्रोध में आकर उन्होंने पर्वत को शाप दे दिया कि वह रोज घटता जाएगा और एक दिन पृथ्वी से समाप्त हो जाएगा।
3. द्वापर युग में ब्रजवासियों को इन्द्र के प्रकोप से बचाने के लिये भगवान कृष्ण ने गोवर्धन पर्वत को अपनी कनिष्ठा अंगुली पर उठाया था। तब से इसकी धार्मिक मान्यता काफी बढ़ गई और इसकी पूजा शुरू हो गई। कहा जाता है कि गोवर्धन पर्वत की सप्तकोसी परिक्रमा लगाने सभी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं।
4.प्रत्येक मास की शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी से लेकर पूर्णिमा तक यहां सप्तकोसी परिक्रमा लगाने के लिए भक्तों की भारी भीड़ उमड़ती है। ये पूरी परिक्रमा सात कोस यानी 21 किलोमीटर की है।

1. It is said that the Govardhan mountain is cursed. It was cursed by Pulastya Rishi that one day it would end from the earth. Because of his curse, its size decreases by a handful every day. About five thousand years ago this mountain used to be 30 thousand meters high but today it has remained only about 30 meters. It is believed that when this mountain will be completely absorbed in the earth, then Kali Yuga will end.
2. There is a story about the decrease in the size of the mountain. It is said that once Pulastya Rishi was very impressed by the beauty of Govardhan Parvat. When he wanted to lift it from the Dronachal mountain and bring it along, Giriraj ji said that wherever you keep me for the first time, I will be established there. On the way, the sage put the mountain down for meditation, then he could not move it again. Enraged by this, he cursed the mountain that it would decrease every day and one day it would disappear from the earth.
3. To save the people of Braj from the wrath of Indra in Dwapar Yuga, Lord Krishna raised the Govardhan mountain on his little finger. Since then its religious belief has increased significantly and its worship started. It is said that all wishes are fulfilled by circumambulating the Govardhan mountain.
4. From Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha to Purnima of every month, huge crowd of devotees gather here to perform Saptkosi Parikrama. This complete circumambulation is of seven kos i.e. 21 km.
