उस समय शिवजी के गण प्रबल थे और उन्होंने जलन्धर के शुम्भ-निशुम्भ और महासुर कालनेमि आदि को पराजित कर दिया। यह देख कर सागर पुत्र जलंधर एक विशाल रथ पर चढ़कर – जिस पर लम्बी पताका लगी हुई थी – युद्धभूमि में आया। इधर जय और शील नामक शंकर जी के गण भी युद्ध में तत्पर होकर गर्जने लगे। इस प्रकार दोनो सेनाओं के हाथी, घोड़े, शंख, भेरी और दोनों ओर के सिंहनाद से धरती त्रस्त हो गयी।
जलंधर ने कुहरे के समान असंख्य बाणों को फेंक कर पृथ्वी से आकाश तक व्याप्त कर दिया और नंदी को पांच, गणेश को पांच, वीरभद्र को एक साथ ही बीस बाण मारकर उनके शरीर को छेद दिया और मेघ के समान गर्जना करने लगा। यह देख कार्तिकेय ने भी दैत्य जलन्धर को अपनी शक्ति उठाकर मारी और घोर गर्जन किया, जिसके आघात से वह मूर्छित हो पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा। परन्तु वह शीघ्र ही उठा पडा़ और क्रोधा विष्ट हो कार्तिकेय पर अपनी गदा से प्रहार करने लगा।
ब्रह्मा जी के वरदान की सफलता के लिए शंकर पुत्र कार्तिकेय पृथ्वी पर सो गये। गणेश जी भी गदा के प्रहार से व्याकुल होकर धरती पर गिर पड़े। नंदी व्याकुल हो गदा प्रहार से पृथ्वी पर गिर गये। फिर दैत्य ने हाथ में परिध ले शीघ्र ही वीरभद्र को पृथ्वी पर गिरा देख शंकर जी गण चिल्लाते हुए संग्राम भूमि छोड़ बड़े वेग से भाग चले। वे भागे हुए गण शीघ्र ही शिवजी के पास आ गये और व्याकुलता से युद्ध का सब समाचार कह सुनाया। लीलाधारी भगवान ने उन्हें अभय दे सबका सन्तोषवर्द्धन किया।
At that time Shiva’s ganas were strong and they defeated Shumbh-Nishumbha of Jalandhar and Mahasur Kalnemi etc. Seeing this, Sagar’s son Jalandhar came to the battlefield in a huge chariot with a long flag on it. Here the ganas of Shankar ji named Jai and Sheel also started roaring ready in the war. In this way the earth was plagued by elephants, horses, conch shells, bheri and lions on both sides of the armies. Jalandhar, throwing innumerable arrows like mist, spread from earth to sky, and by hitting Nandi five, Ganesha five, Veerabhadra with twenty arrows at once, pierced his body and started roaring like a cloud. Seeing this, Kartikeya also killed the demon Jalandhara with his power and roared fiercely, due to which he fainted and fell on the earth. But he soon got up and got angry and started attacking Kartikeya with his mace. For the success of Brahma’s boon, Shankar’s son Kartikeya slept on the earth. Ganesh ji also fell on the earth after getting disturbed by the blow of the mace. Nandi became distraught and fell on the earth due to the mace blow. Then the demon took a girdle in his hand and soon after seeing Veerbhadra fell on the earth, Shankar ji shouted and ran away from the battle ground with great speed. Those fledgling ganas soon came to Shivaji and with anxiety narrated all the news of the war. The Leela-dhari God blessed everyone by giving them abhay.
