तुलसी जी ने भगवान विष्णु को पत्थर होने का श्राप क्यों दिया?

पौराणिक काल में एक वृंदा नाम की लड़की थी। उसका जन्म राक्षस कुल में हुआ था। वृंदा बचपन से ही भगवान विष्णु जी की परम भक्त थी। बड़े ही प्रेम से भगवान की पूजा किया करती थी। जब वह बड़ी हुई तो उनका विवाह राक्षस कुल में दानव राजा जलंधर से हो गया, जलंधर समुद्र से उत्पन्न हुआ था। वृंदा बड़ी ही पतिव्रता स्त्री थी, सदा अपने पति की सेवा किया करती थी।

एक बार देवताओं और दानवों में युद्ध हुआ जब जलंधर युद्ध पर जाने लगे तो वृंदा ने कहा – “स्वामी आप युद्ध पर जा रहे हैं, आप जब तक युद्ध में रहेगें मैं पूजा में बैठकर आपकी जीत के लिए अनुष्ठान करुंगी और जब तक आप वापस नहीं आ जाते मैं अपना संकल्प नही छोडूगीं”। जलंधर तो युद्ध में चले गए और वृंदा व्रत का संकल्प लेकर पूजा में बैठ गई। उनके व्रत के प्रभाव से देवता भी जलंधर को ना जीत सके, सारे देवता जब हारने लगे तो वो भगवान विष्णु जी के पास गए।

सबने भगवान से प्रार्थना की तो भगवान कहने लगे कि – “वृंदा मेरी परम भक्त है मैं उसके साथ छल नहीं कर सकता”. इस पर देवता बोले – “भगवान दूसरा कोई उपाय भी तो नहीं है, अब आप ही हमारी मदद कर सकते हैं”।

तब भगवान ने जलंधर का रूप रखा और वृंदा के महल में पहुंच गए. जैसे ही वृंदा ने अपने पति को देखा, वे तुरंत पूजा में से उठ गई और उनके चरण छू लिए। जैसे ही उनका संकल्प टूटा, युद्ध में देवताओं ने जलंधर को मार दिया और उसका सिर काटकर अलग कर दिया। उनका सिर वृंदा के महल में गिरा जब वृंदा ने देखा कि मेरे पति का सिर तो कटा पड़ा है तो फिर ये जो मेरे सामने खड़े हैं ये कौन हैं?

उन्होंने पूछा – “आप कौन हैं? जिसका स्पर्श मैंने किया”, तब भगवान अपने रूप में आ गए पर वे कुछ ना बोल सके, वृंदा सारी बात समझ गई। उन्होंने भगवान को श्राप दे दिया कि आप पत्थर के हो जाओ, भगवान तुंरत पत्थर के हो गए। सभी देवता हाहाकार करने लगे। लक्ष्मी जी रोने लगीं और प्रार्थना करने लगीं. तब वृंदा जी ने भगवान का शाप विमोचन किया और अपने पति का सिर लेकर वे सती हो गईं।

उनकी राख से एक पौधा निकला तब भगवान विष्णु जी ने कहा – “आज से इनका नाम तुलसी है और मेरा एक रूप इस पत्थर के रूप में रहेगा जिसे शालिग्राम के नाम से तुलसी जी के साथ ही पूजा जाएगा और मैं बिना तुलसी जी के भोग स्वीकार नहीं करुंगा”।

तब से तुलसी जी की पूजा सभी करने लगे और तभी से तुलसी जी का विवाह शालिग्राम जी के साथ कार्तिक मास में किया जाता है। देवउठनी एकादशी के दिन इसे तुलसी विवाह के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

Once upon a time there was a girl named Vrinda. He was born in a demon clan. Vrinda was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu since childhood. She used to worship God with great love. When she grew up, she was married to the demon king Jalandhar in the Rakshasa clan, Jalandhar was born from the ocean. Vrinda was a very pious woman, always serving her husband.

Once there was a war between the gods and the demons, when Jalandhar started going to war, Vrinda said – “Sir, you are going to war, as long as you are in the war, I will sit in worship and perform rituals for your victory and until you return.” If I come, I will not give up my resolve. Jalandhar went to war and Vrinda took the vow of fasting and sat in worship. Due to the effect of his fast, even the gods could not conquer Jalandhar, when all the gods started losing, they went to Lord Vishnu.

When everyone prayed to God, then God started saying that – “Vrinda is my supreme devotee, I cannot cheat with her”. On this the deity said – “God there is no other way, now you can help us”.

Then the Lord took the form of Jalandhar and reached Vrinda’s palace. As soon as Vrinda saw her husband, she immediately got up from the puja and touched his feet. As soon as his resolve was broken, the gods killed Jalandhar in battle and severed his head. His head fell in Vrinda’s palace when Vrinda saw that my husband’s head had been chopped off, then who are these who are standing in front of me?

He asked – “Who are you? Whom I touched”, then God came in His form but He could not speak anything, Vrinda understood the whole thing. He cursed God that you become of stone, God immediately became of stone. All the gods started crying. Lakshmi ji started crying and started praying. Then Vrinda ji released the curse of God and she became sati by taking her husband’s head.

When a plant came out of his ashes, Lord Vishnu said – “From today onwards his name is Tulsi and one form of me will remain in the form of this stone which will be worshiped along with Tulsi ji in the name of Shaligram and I will accept Bhog without Tulsi ji. I will not”.

Since then everyone started worshiping Tulsi ji and since then Tulsi ji is married with Shaligram ji in the month of Kartik. It is celebrated as Tulsi Vivah on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi.
