‘स्व’ की सर्वथा विस्मृति होकर केवल प्रियतम ही रह जाते हैं, उनका सुख ही अपना सुख बन जाता है | फिर वहाँ यदि भोग भी कहीं रहते हैं तो वे त्यागमूलक ही रहते हैं,यही ‘गोपीभाव’ है | गोपी किसी स्त्री का नाम नहीं है; जिसमे सर्वथा त्यागपूर्ण प्रेम है; जिसका प्रत्येक विचार, जिसकी प्रत्येक चेष्टा, प्रत्येक क्रिया सहज ही अपने प्रियतम श्रीश्यामसुन्दर के लिये होती है, वाही गोपी है | गोपी का संसार, गोपी के संसार की क्रिया सभी एकमात्र प्रियतम श्रीकृष्ण के लिये हैं | उनका खाना-पहनना, साज-श्रृंगार करना, सोना-जागना, कर्म करना या कर्मत्याग करना, जीना-मरना-सभी प्रियतम श्रीकृष्ण के मन के अनुसार श्रीकृष्ण के सुख के लिये ही होता है | उसके त्याग और भोग-दोनों में ही भगवत्प्रेम भरा है | मीरा ने कहा –कहो तो मोतियन माँग भरावाँ, कहो तो मूँड मुडावाँ | कहो तो कसूमल चुनड़ी रँगावाँ, भगवाँ भेस बणावाँ ||
जिसमे प्रियतम को सुख, जो प्रियतम को रुचिकारक, जैसी प्रियतम की इच्छा, वही प्रेमी का स्वभाव | उसे न किसी त्याग के बाहरी रूप से सम्बन्ध है, न भोग से | उसका सम्बन्ध है केवल प्रियतम से | उसका त्याग भी विशुद्ध प्रेममूलक और उसका भोग भी विशुद्ध प्रेममूलक –अतएव त्याग और भोग दोनों ही परम विशुद्ध त्यागमय हैं |

Completely forgetting the ‘Self’, only the Beloved remains, their happiness becomes our own happiness. Then, even if there are indulgences somewhere, they remain sacrificial, this is ‘Gopi Bhaav’. Gopi is not the name of a woman; In which there is absolutely sacrificial love; Whose every thought, whose every effort, every action is instinctively for his beloved Shri Shyamsundar, that is Gopi. The world of the gopis, the actions of the world of the gopis are all for the sake of the only beloved Shri Krishna. His food-dressing, dressing-up, sleeping-waking up, doing work or giving up work, living-dying-all according to the mind of the Beloved Shri Krishna, happens only for the happiness of Shri Krishna. His sacrifice and enjoyment are filled with love for God. Meera said – If you ask, I will get the pearls filled, If you ask, I will shave my head. If you say, I will paint the kasumal chundi, I will disguise myself as a god ||
In which pleasure is given to the Beloved, which is pleasing to the Beloved, as is the desire of the Beloved, that is the nature of the Lover. He is neither related to any external form of sacrifice, nor to enjoyment. He is concerned only with the Beloved. Its renunciation is pure love and its enjoyment is also pure love – therefore both renunciation and enjoyment are supremely pure renunciation.
